I asked.

She didn't answer immediately.

"I don't have enough information to conclude that."

I nodded.

I was glad she said it.

I didn't want a lawyer who would accuse my family simply because I was upset.

I wanted someone who would tell me what the documents could and couldn't establish.

"What about Valerie?"

"The same answer."

I looked down.

I had known that would be her response.

Still, hearing it made me feel better.

Not because it proved my daughter was innocent.

Because it reminded me that I wasn't required to make a judgment before the evidence was available.

I asked what would happen if the records showed that someone had signed for me without permission.

My attorney explained that the available options would depend on the exact document, how it had been used, and the applicable rules.

She didn't promise a particular result.

I appreciated that.

I had heard enough confident explanations from Brandon.

I didn't need another person telling me everything was simple when it wasn't.

I asked whether I should contact the people handling the lease myself.

She recommended coordinating those requests with her so the information could be obtained and preserved appropriately.

I agreed.

For once, I didn't feel compelled to do everything alone.

I had spent thirty years solving problems for Valerie.

I knew how to make phone calls.

I knew how to arrange appointments.

I knew how to push through a difficult day.

But I didn't know every legal implication of a disputed signature.

And pretending I did wouldn't help anyone.

We reviewed the documents again.

My attorney wanted to establish the identity of the party responsible for receiving or maintaining the lease paperwork.

She also wanted to determine what supporting identification had been requested and who had supplied it.

I wrote everything down.

The questions grew more specific.

I felt calmer as they did.

Not because I was becoming less concerned.

Because I finally had a direction.

When the call ended, I looked at the notes.

There were no dramatic revelations.

No confession.

No sudden proof that one person was responsible.

Just a set of records we needed to examine.

That was enough.

I leaned back and thought about Valerie.

I wondered whether she was still upset with me.

After our conversation, I hoped she understood that my concern wasn't an attempt to punish her.

But I couldn't make my next decision depend on whether she approved.

I had done that before.

Too often.

I remembered how she sounded when she said she didn't want us to keep fighting.

I didn't want that either.

I wanted a relationship where we could disagree without someone being treated as disloyal.

I wanted her to be able to tell me when I had hurt her.

And I wanted to be able to tell her when she'd hurt me.

That didn't seem unreasonable.

But it was unfamiliar.

For years, I'd mistaken the absence of arguments for proof that our relationship was healthy.

Maybe Valerie had done the same.

I couldn't speak for her.

I could only change what I did.

I picked up my phone.

I considered sending her a message.

I wanted to say I loved her.

I wanted to say the conversation had mattered to me.

Then I thought about what I might accidentally add.

I'm sorry.

Please don't be upset.

I promise everything will be fine.

I stopped.

I wasn't sorry for asking questions.

I couldn't promise everything would be fine.

And I didn't want to tell her what she should feel.

I wrote a short message instead.

"I love you, Valerie. I meant what I said. I want us to be able to talk honestly, even when it's difficult."

I read it.

There was no accusation.

No demand for reassurance.

No attempt to make her responsible for comforting me.

I sent it.

Then I placed the phone down.

I didn't watch the screen.

I didn't wait for a response.

I had said what I meant.

That was enough for the moment.

I returned to the paperwork.

The license photocopy was still there.

My photograph looked back at me.

I remembered the first time I'd noticed it.

The sudden fear.

The sense that my name had been taken out of my hands.

That feeling hadn't disappeared.

But it no longer controlled every thought.

I knew what I needed to do.

I needed to preserve the documents.

I needed to obtain the relevant records through the proper channels.

I needed to learn what the signature had been used to authorize.

And I needed to remain open to an explanation I hadn't yet considered.

That last part mattered.

I didn't want to become so convinced that Brandon was responsible that I ignored evidence pointing elsewhere.

I didn't want to decide Susan was involved simply because she had treated me badly.

And I didn't want to assume Valerie was innocent solely because she was my daughter.

I wanted facts.

I wanted them even if they complicated the story I had been telling myself.

That was new for me.

For most of my life, I'd worked hard to keep my family relationships understandable.

Valerie was my daughter.

I was her mother.

She needed me.

I helped.

When something went wrong, I looked for a way to repair it.

I knew how to live inside that arrangement.

I didn't know what to do when helping meant stepping away from the person I loved and allowing consequences to be examined.

But I was learning.

Not quickly.

Not without fear.

I still worried that Valerie would blame me if the records revealed wrongdoing.

I still worried Brandon would say I had betrayed the family.

I still worried Susan would use the situation to make me feel small.

Those fears remained.

The difference was that I was no longer allowing them to decide whether my questions deserved answers.

I checked the documents one last time.

Then I placed them back in their original order.

The license photocopy went behind the lease renewal.

The signature page remained where I could find it.

I closed the folder.

My attorney would help obtain and examine the relevant records.

Until then, there was no reason to invent an answer.

I looked around the kitchen.

The morning light had shifted.

The table was clear except for the folder, my notes, and my phone.

I thought about how much time I'd spent in that room over the previous days.

Looking at the same papers.

Remembering the same insults.

Trying to understand the same hurt.

I didn't regret thinking carefully.

But I could see how easily I had become trapped in questions only someone else could answer.

I couldn't discover who had supplied my identification by staring at the photocopy.

I couldn't establish who signed the lease renewal by imagining Brandon's motives.

And I couldn't repair my relationship with Valerie by pretending I hadn't been hurt.

Those problems needed different kinds of attention.

The documents needed evidence.

The relationship needed honesty.

And I needed to stop treating both as things I could fix by being sufficiently accommodating.

My phone lit up.

A message from Valerie.

I looked at it for a moment before opening it.

She had written that she loved me, too.

She said she wanted us to talk again when things were calmer.

I read the message twice.

Then I set the phone down.

I was glad she'd answered.

I didn't need to turn that small exchange into proof that everything was repaired.

It wasn't.

But it was something we could build on.

I could accept that without making promises I wasn't ready to keep.

I looked at the red folder.

I still didn't know what the records would reveal.

I didn't know whether the signature had been placed there through deliberate wrongdoing or some explanation that had not yet been documented.

I didn't know who had supplied my driver's license.

And I didn't know how much Valerie understood.

But I finally knew how I was going to approach those uncertainties.

I would not accuse without evidence.

I would not excuse without explanation.

And I would not abandon the questions simply because the answers might be painful.

I stood up.

I carried the folder to a safe place where I could retrieve it when my attorney needed it.

Then I returned to the kitchen.

The table looked ordinary again.

I made another cup of coffee.

This time, I sat down and drank it while it was still warm.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: My
