6 – I Wanted to Believe Valerie Had Made an Innocent Mistake, but Believing Her Without Answers Had Become Too Dangerous

I was still searching for an explanation that wouldn't hurt.

That was the truth I didn't particularly want to admit.

I had the red folder.

I had the lease renewal.

I had the photocopy of my driver's license.

And I had a signature that somebody had made in my name.

Yet part of me kept trying to imagine how all of it could have happened innocently.

Maybe someone had misunderstood a request.

Maybe the wrong information had been attached.

Maybe Valerie had believed she was permitted to do something I had never agreed to.

I didn't know.

And because I didn't know, I had to stop treating those possibilities as answers.

I looked at the kitchen table.

The documents lay exactly where I had left them.

I wasn't frightened of the paper.

I was frightened of what the paper might tell me about the people closest to me.

For years, I had assumed that Valerie's happiness and my willingness to help were connected.

If she needed something, I gave what I could.

If she made a decision I didn't understand, I tried to accept it.

If she hurt my feelings, I told myself to be patient.

I had rarely asked what she owed me in return.

That wasn't how I wanted to think about motherhood.

I didn't want a daughter who loved me because she felt indebted.

I wanted her to love me because I was her mother.

That had always seemed like a reasonable hope.

Then came the wedding.

The first time I thought about it that morning, I felt the same embarrassment I'd felt before.

It wasn't only sadness.

It was the humiliation of being told, in effect, that my presence wasn't important.

Valerie was beginning a marriage.

Brandon would be part of her life.

Other people would recognize that commitment.

And I had been left outside.

I had tried to act as though I understood.

I told myself I shouldn't take it personally.

But how could I not?

I was her mother.

I had raised her alone.

I knew what it meant to spend thirty years showing up for someone.

I knew what it meant to put their needs ahead of my convenience.

I had done those things because I loved her.

I hadn't imagined I would need to argue for a place at her wedding.

And I hadn't imagined that afterward, people would use my pain to discredit a completely separate concern.

That was what made the call so difficult to forget.

The woman had spoken as though the wedding explained everything.

I was older.

I was disappointed.

I was allowing hurt feelings to interfere with a young marriage.

She had made it sound simple.

Almost embarrassing.

I could still hear the impatience in her voice.

And I could remember my own reaction.

I had closed my eyes.

Not because I agreed.

Because I recognized what was happening.

Someone was taking something I'd said and turning it into a flaw in my character.

The question wasn't being answered.

The person asking it was being judged.

I had let that happen too often.

I didn't want to let it happen again.

I opened the folder.

The signature was visible near the lease renewal.

I studied it for a moment.

I didn't need to compare it with anything else to know the essential fact.

I hadn't written it.

I couldn't say how it had been made.

I couldn't say who had done it.

But I knew where I had been in my own decisions.

I had not agreed to this.

I moved the page slightly.

The photocopy of my license was underneath.

That was the detail that kept changing the way I understood the situation.

A copied signature might have been described as an administrative mistake.

I wasn't saying it was one.

But I could imagine somebody trying to describe it that way.

The identification was harder to ignore.

Someone had supplied a document containing my personal information.

It hadn't appeared there because I wished it into existence.

It was part of the paperwork.

I looked at my photograph.

I thought about how ordinary it was to show a driver's license when proof of identity was needed.

Usually, I knew why I was showing it.

Usually, I was present.

This time, I had learned about its use only after finding the papers.

That difference mattered.

I tried to picture tomorrow's discussion.

I expected Brandon to speak confidently.

He usually did.

Even when I disagreed with him, he had a way of continuing as though the matter had already been settled.

I had often found myself becoming quiet in response.

I didn't want to appear argumentative.

I didn't want Valerie to think I was attacking her husband.

And I certainly didn't want Susan using my objection as another reason to criticize me.

Those concerns had controlled too many conversations.

I couldn't let them control this one.

If Brandon said there was nothing to worry about, I would ask why.

If he said the document was harmless, I would ask him to explain how it came to bear my signature.

If he said we should keep the matter private, I would remember that privacy was not an explanation.

I wouldn't need to raise my voice.

I wouldn't need to insult him.

I could simply keep asking about what the document showed.

The thought was reassuring.

Not pleasant.

Just reassuring.

I had spent years believing that a difficult conversation had to become an argument.

Maybe that was why I'd avoided so many of them.

I assumed that disagreeing with someone meant creating trouble.

But I was beginning to understand that asking for an answer didn't create the underlying problem.

It revealed whether there was one.

And in this case, there clearly was something that needed explaining.

I looked toward the phone.

I wondered whether Valerie was thinking about me.

Was she angry that I'd mentioned an attorney?

Was she frightened about the documents?

Did she still believe I was acting out because of the wedding?

I couldn't know.

I wanted to call her and ask.

But I knew I might spend the entire conversation trying to comfort her.

That was what I did when Valerie sounded unhappy.

I listened to what she needed.

I looked for a way to make it better.

Sometimes I gave an answer before I had thought about whether it was wise.

I didn't want to do that with this paperwork.

Not because Valerie didn't deserve compassion.

Because I deserved enough time to understand my own position.

I sat quietly.

The room hadn't changed.

The table was still the same.

The sunlight was still moving across it.

Nothing outside my thoughts suggested that I was facing an important decision.

I found that strange.

I had expected discoveries like this to feel dramatic.

A raised voice.

A slammed door.

Someone announcing a terrible truth.

Instead, there was a photocopy.

A signature.

And a mother alone at a kitchen table.

I looked down at my hands.

They were steady now.

Earlier, I'd been trembling.

I was glad the shaking had stopped.

It didn't mean I was less concerned.

It meant I had something specific to do.

I would keep the papers together.

I would bring them to the discussion with my attorney.

I would listen carefully to whatever explanation was offered.

And I would not decide in advance that Valerie was innocent simply because I desperately wanted her to be.

That last decision hurt.

I could feel it.

It seemed disloyal even to consider the possibility that my daughter knew more than she'd said.

But refusing to consider something didn't make it impossible.

I had learned that the hard way with the wedding.

I hadn't wanted to believe she would exclude me.

Then she did.

I hadn't wanted to believe Brandon could continue speaking to me so dismissively.

Yet he had.

I hadn't wanted to believe Susan's remarks reflected genuine contempt.

But they had become too familiar to dismiss as accidents.

I still didn't know what those histories meant for the documents.

I needed to keep reminding myself of that.

Past cruelty didn't establish present guilt.

But past experience did explain why I could no longer accept reassurance without facts.

I leaned back and looked toward the red folder.

There was no need to make a decision about forgiveness yet.

I hadn't heard an explanation.

There was no need to decide whether my relationship with Valerie could recover.

I hadn't learned what happened.

I didn't even need to decide what I thought of Brandon's motives.

I only needed to hold firm to what I knew.

My identity had been used in paperwork I hadn't authorized.

The people I asked had not explained it.

And tomorrow, my attorney would be present when I asked again.

That was enough for now.

I thought about the years I'd spent trying to keep everyone happy.

The effort had never worked as well as I pretended.

Somebody was always dissatisfied.

Valerie needed something else.

Brandon wanted less interference.

Susan found another reason to criticize.

And I kept rearranging myself around their expectations.

I had treated their approval as something I could earn by being sufficiently accommodating.

Maybe I had been wrong from the beginning.

Maybe the more I gave, the less reason anyone had to consider what it cost me.

I couldn't know whether that was how they saw it.

I could only say how it had felt.

I was tired of being grateful for the smallest sign of consideration.

Tired of explaining why an insult hurt.

Tired of questioning myself whenever someone suggested I was too sensitive.

And very tired of being told that a forged signature was merely another expression of my disappointment about a wedding.

I closed the folder again.

I wanted to trust my daughter.

I still did.

That was not going to change in a single morning.

But trust couldn't survive on my wishes alone.

It needed honesty.

And for the first time, I was prepared to wait for honesty instead of inventing it on someone else's behalf.
