2 – The Photocopy Beneath the Lease Renewal Made Me Question Every Time I Had Allowed My Family to Ignore My Boundaries

I kept looking at the picture on my driver's license.

It was an ordinary photograph.

The kind nobody particularly likes.

I had seen it plenty of times before.

But I had never expected to find it attached to a document I hadn't signed.

I looked from the photograph to the signature.

Then back again.

Someone had needed proof of who I was.

And somehow, that proof had ended up in the red folder.

I sat down.

I hadn't realized I was standing.

The chair scraped against the kitchen floor, and the sound seemed too loud.

I placed the photocopy in front of me.

I wanted to remember exactly where I'd found it.

Behind the lease renewal.

Attached to the paperwork.

Not loose among unrelated pages.

There was nothing accidental about its presence.

At least, I couldn't see how there could be.

A copy of my identification didn't simply appear there because someone had made a spelling mistake.

My name had been used.

My signature had been reproduced.

And my driver's license had been supplied.

I knew enough to understand that these were different things.

A signature could be imitated.

A name could be written by anyone.

But the license meant that someone had also obtained information belonging to me.

I didn't know who had done it.

That question frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I could hear Brandon's voice again.

He wanted everything handled privately.

The word privately stayed with me.

It sounded reasonable until I considered what he was asking.

He wanted me to avoid outside help before anyone had explained what happened.

He wanted me to trust the same people who were refusing to answer my questions.

And he expected me to agree because Valerie was my daughter.

I lowered my head.

I knew that argument.

I had heard versions of it for years.

Think of Valerie.

Don't embarrass Valerie.

Try to understand Valerie.

I had spent so much time thinking about my daughter's feelings that I rarely stopped to consider my own.

That was partly my responsibility.

I needed to admit that.

Nobody had physically stopped me from asking questions when Brandon spoke rudely.

Nobody had forced me to smile at Susan's remarks.

I had chosen to avoid arguments.

Sometimes because I was exhausted.

Sometimes because I wanted an ordinary, peaceful visit.

And sometimes because I was afraid my daughter would choose them over me.

That last reason was the one I disliked admitting.

It made me feel small.

I was an adult woman.

A mother.

Someone who had worked, kept a home, and raised a child without a partner beside her.

Yet I had become nervous about upsetting people who regularly upset me.

I leaned back and looked around the kitchen.

It was my little house.

Susan had never been impressed by it.

I remembered the way she'd spoken about my clothes and my work.

Those comments had always seemed small enough to ignore individually.

One remark.

One awkward visit.

One sharp sentence.

But small things had a way of accumulating.

And I had kept telling myself not to count them.

The red folder lay open on the table.

I reached for my coffee.

The cup felt cool against my fingers.

I took a sip anyway.

It tasted unpleasant.

I set it down.

Then I remembered the woman on the call telling me not to damage my daughter's marriage.

That accusation had hurt because it was so far from what I wanted.

I didn't want Valerie's marriage to fail.

I hadn't wanted her wedding ruined.

I hadn't wanted an argument with Brandon or Susan.

I had wanted to be treated as her mother.

And when I discovered that my name had been used, I wanted the truth.

Those wishes weren't the same as revenge.

I needed to remember that.

Because I knew how quickly the conversation would become about my attitude.

They would say I was overreacting.

They would ask why I couldn't forgive a mistake.

They might tell me I was making everyone miserable.

And if I wasn't careful, I would begin defending myself instead of asking about the document.

That had happened before.

Someone would say something cruel.

I would object.

Then we would spend the rest of the conversation discussing whether I had been too sensitive.

By the end, the original remark would be forgotten.

I would be the one apologizing.

It was a familiar arrangement.

And it worked because I participated.

I looked at the photocopied license.

I couldn't participate this time.

I picked up the lease renewal and read the part carrying my name.

It was strange seeing myself represented on paper without remembering any conversation about it.

There should have been a moment when someone asked for permission.

A question.

An explanation.

Something I could recall.

There was nothing.

I had not signed that lease renewal.

I knew it.

I didn't need anyone to tell me what my own signature looked like.

I didn't need Brandon to explain my memory to me.

And I didn't need Valerie to decide whether my concern was legitimate.

I had spent years trusting that family members wouldn't take advantage of my willingness to help.

Now I was holding something that made that trust difficult to maintain.

I wanted to call Valerie.

That surprised me.

After everything we'd just said, I still wanted to hear her voice.

I wanted to ask one simple question.

"Did you know about this?"

But I didn't pick up the phone.

Not because I wanted to punish her.

I was afraid the conversation would go exactly as the previous one had.

She would ask me to wait.

Brandon would speak.

Someone would remind me about the wedding.

And I would find myself explaining why I deserved to ask a question.

I didn't have the strength to repeat that conversation.

Not without someone beside me who could keep it focused on the facts.

My attorney.

I had said those words aloud during the call.

It had changed the silence on the other end.

I remembered Brandon asking that lawyers remain out of it.

I remembered how quickly the tone had shifted.

Before then, I had been a disappointed mother.

An inconvenient woman with hurt feelings.

After I mentioned legal help, nobody seemed quite as comfortable.

I didn't know what that meant.

I wasn't going to pretend it proved anything.

People could become defensive for many reasons.

But I couldn't ignore it either.

I turned the license photocopy over.

Then I turned it back.

I wanted to understand when it had been made available.

I couldn't tell from what was in front of me.

Another question for tomorrow.

I looked at the signature again.

Another question.

And the lease renewal.

Another.

There were more questions than answers.

That was the truth.

For a moment, I felt foolish for having expected some obvious explanation to appear once I reviewed the papers.

As if a careful second look could make a bad situation disappear.

It couldn't.

The pages were exactly what they had been before.

Only my understanding had changed.

I thought about Valerie growing up.

Not one particular event.

Just the years.

The responsibility of knowing another person depended on me.

I had taken that responsibility seriously.

I still did.

But I was beginning to understand that raising a daughter didn't mean giving her permission to decide where my boundaries belonged.

Love didn't erase consent.

And being a mother didn't make my identity available for someone else's use.

I wished I had learned to say that earlier.

Maybe the conversation would have been different.

Maybe Valerie would have been angry with me sooner.

Maybe nothing would have changed.

I couldn't know.

I only knew what was on my table.

The documents.

My name.

My photograph.

I slid the license copy back into the folder.

Then I stopped.

I took it out again.

I needed to keep examining what I'd found without disturbing its place among the papers.

That mattered now.

For the first time, I wasn't thinking only as a mother trying to save a relationship.

I was thinking as the person whose information had been used.

It was uncomfortable.

It felt almost disloyal.

But I had reached a point where protecting everyone else's feelings meant leaving myself without protection.

I looked at the clock.

Tomorrow at ten.

That was the appointment I had agreed to.

There was no reason to have another argument before then.

I arranged the documents inside the folder.

The license photocopy went with the lease renewal.

The signature remained visible.

I closed the cover.

Then I placed both hands on top of it.

I didn't feel powerful.

I didn't feel brave.

I felt frightened of what I might learn.

But I knew what I was going to do.

I would bring the documents to the conversation with my attorney.

And I would ask for an explanation that had nothing to do with wedding invitations.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Had Always Protected My
