wasn't the same as knowing whether someone was safe inside it.

“What happened after that first call?”

Bentley looked toward Maddie.

She was busy cutting a pancake with the side of her fork.

He lowered his voice.

“Mom said she'd come back soon.”

“How soon?”

“She said it would probably be one night.”

I glanced at the clock.

Nine days.

A child could understand one night.

He could wait for one night.

But nine days was a different door.

“What did she say?”

He stared at the crumbs on his plate.

“She said she was trying to come home.”

“That sounds reassuring.

I tried to imagine Amber lying in a hospital bed, exhausted after surgery, perhaps taking medication for pain.

There were ordinary reasons someone might sound confused.

But there were also reasons to worry.

And I had no way of knowing which one applied.

“Has she called since then?”

Bentley shook his head.

“Not once?”

“No.”

I looked at the telephone on my counter.

I could call the hospital.

I could explain that a woman named Amber had been admitted after a fall and that her two children had been alone for nine days.

I could ask whether someone could tell me if she was all right.

I could stop pretending that waiting was a reasonable plan.

I stood up.

Bentley jumped at the sudden movement.

“It's all right,” I told him. “I'm going to make a call.”

He grabbed my wrist.

“No!”

His fingers closed around me with a strength I hadn't expected.

I looked down at his hand.

Then at his face.

He was terrified.

“Bentley, listen to me.”

“Please don't.”

“I need to find out what's happened to your
