19 – I Had Wanted Landon to Understand My Decision, but I Finally Accepted That His Agreement Was Not Necessary for the Card to Stay Blocked

I had spent twelve years trying to find the perfect explanation.

Something Landon couldn't misunderstand.

Something gentle enough not to offend him.

Something clear enough to end an argument before it began.

I never found it.

And sitting there on the day of our divorce, I finally understood why.

The problem wasn't always the wording.

Sometimes Landon simply didn't want the answer I was giving him.

I looked at the phone.

The sounds from the club continued in the background.

I could hear people talking.

The music hadn't stopped.

Nothing about the surroundings suggested that the world had changed.

But something had changed for me.

I was no longer willing to treat Landon's dissatisfaction as proof that I needed to reconsider.

That didn't mean I wanted to hurt him.

It didn't mean I enjoyed hearing him angry.

It didn't mean I believed every decision I had made during our marriage had been perfect.

Far from it.

I had made mistakes.

I had delayed necessary restrictions.

I had allowed a supplementary card to remain available after I knew the arrangement needed attention.

I had responded to accusations about trust by weakening boundaries I had every reason to maintain.

Those choices belonged to me.

I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

But admitting my mistakes didn't mean I had to keep making them.

That was the distinction I had missed for years.

I could regret having allowed too much access.

I could regret waiting until the divorce was final to take firmer action.

I could regret every time I had abandoned a financial decision because I dreaded another argument.

And still, I could refuse to restore the card.

The past didn't require me to repeat it.

I looked at Dad.

His expression was calm.

He had been clear from the beginning.

Landon had never had ownership of the company.

He had been allowed to use certain financial privileges.

And I had let those privileges continue beyond what was sensible.

Dad hadn't needed to make a dramatic speech.

He had simply pointed out what I hadn't wanted to confront.

The access had been mine to grant.

It had never become Landon's property.

I thought about how often I had confused those ideas.

Not in the official sense.

I knew the legal and financial distinctions.

But in ordinary conversations with Landon, I had behaved as though access came with an emotional guarantee.

If I withdrew it, he might feel rejected.

If he felt rejected, I might have damaged the marriage.

If I had damaged the marriage, perhaps I should have compromised.

That chain of reasoning had trapped me.

Now I could see where it went wrong.

Someone's feelings about a financial boundary didn't determine whether the boundary was appropriate.

Landon was allowed to dislike my decision.

He was allowed to be frustrated.

He was allowed to believe I should have handled the situation differently.

But those reactions didn't give him a right to use company funds.

I pressed my hand against the table.

I remembered how nervous I'd felt when his name appeared on the screen.

For twelve years, that name had meant so many things.

Home.

Arguments.

Apologies.

Anniversaries.

The hope that our next morning together might be easier than the last.

Those memories hadn't disappeared.

I doubted they would disappear quickly.

But they no longer determined who could spend the company's money.

That was something I needed to remember.

A marriage could end without every old feeling ending at the same moment.

I could still feel guilty.

I could still feel unsettled.

I could still want Landon to understand.

But I didn't have to act on those feelings by reversing a necessary decision.

I looked at the declined transaction again.

It had become an unlikely reminder of that difference.

The payment had failed.

The card was unavailable.

And Landon's anger hadn't changed either fact.

I thought about Tessa.

I had heard her impatience behind him.

I had heard enough to know that the situation was uncomfortable.

I hadn't heard enough to know what she understood or what she expected.

I didn't want to make assumptions.

There had been enough confusion already.

I knew my own responsibilities.

That was where I needed to keep my attention.

The company card had been provided for travel and household expenses during our marriage.

The marriage was now over.

Landon had no official role in the company.

The access had been restricted.

Those were the facts.

I didn't need to add motives I couldn't prove.

I didn't need to imagine hidden conversations.

I didn't need to turn the declined payment into something more complicated than what I had actually witnessed.

The problem in front of me was already serious enough.

I had spent years allowing a former privilege to feel permanent.

Now I was correcting that mistake.

I listened to Landon.

I recognized the same forcefulness that had once made me doubt myself.

For a moment, the old pressure returned.

The temptation to say something softer.

To offer another explanation.

To promise we could revisit the decision.

I let the temptation pass.

I had already explained the company's position.

Repeating myself endlessly wouldn't make it clearer.

It would only return me to the familiar pattern in which his objections controlled the conversation.

I didn't want that.

I wanted to leave the decision where it belonged.

With the person responsible for the business.

Me.

I looked at Dad again.

He hadn't taken over.

He hadn't solved the emotional part for me.

And he couldn't.

That was something I finally accepted.

He could advise me about the accounts.

He could remind me of Landon's lack of authority.

He could point out where I had allowed boundaries to become unclear.

But only I could decide whether to keep surrendering whenever Landon objected.

I had made that decision.

Not with a dramatic declaration.

Not with an angry speech.

With a simple refusal.

The card wasn't his to use.

I wasn't restoring it.

I felt tired.

But beneath that tiredness was something steadier than relief.

I could live with Landon's disagreement.

I could live with the discomfort of hearing him angry.

What I could no longer accept was allowing those feelings to override my responsibility to the company.

That was the decision I intended to keep.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Divorce Ended Our
