16 – The Divorce Had Ended Our Marriage That Morning, and I Finally Understood That Landon’s Anger Could Not Give Him Rights He Never Had

I had expected the day of my divorce to be about endings.

The end of a marriage.

The end of years of arguments.

The end of believing that another apology or another ordinary morning might somehow make everything better.

I hadn't expected to spend it defending a company card.

But there I was.

Sitting across from my father.

Holding my phone.

Listening to my former husband object because a transaction had failed.

I thought about the timing.

The divorce had been finalized that morning.

Landon's card was already being declined.

And he was calling me as though the legal change between us had no effect on what he could expect from my business.

I looked at Dad.

He was the person who had urged me to change every PIN.

At the time, I hadn't fully appreciated what the advice meant.

I had been thinking about the practical task.

Changing numbers.

Closing off familiar routes of access.

Making sure Landon couldn't continue using financial privileges that no longer made sense.

But the conversation at the club had shown me that changing a PIN didn't automatically change a person's expectations.

Landon still expected access.

He still believed he could object strongly enough to make me reconsider.

Or at least, that was how his behavior appeared to me.

I couldn't know exactly what he was thinking.

I knew only what he had done.

He had tried to use the company card.

The payment failed.

He called demanding to know what I had changed.

And he insisted I had no right to stop him.

Those actions were clear.

They didn't require me to guess at any hidden motives.

I thought again about how Landon had never held a formal role in the company.

That fact had remained true through every year of our marriage.

He wasn't a director.

He wasn't a shareholder.

He wasn't an employee.

He had no signing authority.

The supplementary card hadn't changed those things.

It had given him limited access because I allowed it.

And I had allowed it for far too long.

Looking back, I could see why the distinction mattered.

If I treated permission as permanent, then withdrawing it would always feel like taking something away.

But if I understood permission for what it was, the situation looked different.

I had granted access.

I had responsibility for the account.

And I could withdraw that access when it was no longer appropriate.

The divorce made the need obvious.

But the principle had been true long before that morning.

I hadn't wanted to acknowledge it because doing so would have forced me to confront Landon.

And confronting Landon had become something I avoided whenever possible.

I remembered the familiar accusation.

He would make me feel as though I cared more about company rules than our marriage.

I would try to explain that it wasn't a choice between the two.

But the more I explained, the more defensive I became.

Eventually I would back down.

I didn't want another argument.

I didn't want another evening filled with resentment.

I wanted the ordinary parts of our life to continue.

So I told myself the card wasn't worth the conflict.

Then I repeated that decision.

Again.

And again.

Until I could no longer pretend it was only a temporary arrangement.

I glanced at the phone.

The declined transaction was still there.

I wondered how many earlier opportunities I had missed to establish this boundary calmly and clearly.

Probably more than I wanted to count.

But I wasn't going to spend the rest of the day punishing myself for them.

Regret could become another way of avoiding action.

I had already admitted what I did wrong.

I had given Landon more access than he should have retained.

I had failed to remove it when I recognized the problem.

And I had allowed his objections to influence financial decisions that belonged to me.

Those were my mistakes.

I could acknowledge them without continuing them.

Dad leaned back slightly.

He hadn't spoken for a while.

I wondered what he thought as he watched me handle the call.

He had seen the problem clearly enough to advise immediate action.

But he couldn't resolve the part that lived inside my head.

He couldn't remove my habit of apologizing.

He couldn't make me stop fearing Landon's disapproval.

He couldn't teach me, in one morning, to undo twelve years of emotional reflexes.

That work belonged to me.

I pressed the phone more comfortably against my ear.

The sounds of the club were still present.

Music.

Voices.

The faint noise of glasses.

Tessa had been nearby earlier.

I remembered her irritation.

I didn't know what she expected Landon to do about the failed payment.

I didn't know what he had told her.

I didn't know how much either of them understood about the card's actual status.

Those were things I couldn't responsibly claim.

But I knew what Landon understood about the company.

He had never been granted ownership.

He had never held a formal position.

And I had made it clear that the card was no longer available for his use.

There was no uncertainty about my answer.

That was what mattered.

For years, I had believed I needed to make people comfortable with my decisions before those decisions could be considered fair.

Now I was beginning to see how impossible that standard was.

Someone could be inconvenienced by a reasonable restriction.

Someone could resent losing a privilege.

Someone could accuse me of being unfair because they preferred the old arrangement.

Their reaction didn't automatically settle whether the restriction was justified.

I knew why the company needed control over its cards.

I knew why Landon no longer had permission to use one.

And I knew I had the authority to enforce that boundary.

I didn't need his agreement to recognize those facts.

I thought about the woman I had been when I first gave him the supplementary card.

I had trusted him.

I had expected the marriage to continue.

I had believed that making practical arrangements together was part of building a shared life.

I didn't need to hate that version of myself.

But I did need to recognize where she had gone wrong.

Trust wasn't the same as unlimited financial access.

Marriage wasn't the same as corporate authority.

And avoiding conflict wasn't the same as protecting a relationship.

Those distinctions seemed obvious now.

They hadn't felt obvious when I was living inside the marriage.

That was difficult to explain.

I had not been unaware.

I had not been incapable.

I had simply allowed emotional pressure to outweigh decisions I knew were sensible.

Now the pressure remained, but the marriage was gone.

I had to decide which one would control me.

I looked down at the notification one more time.

Declined.

A single word.

It hadn't changed because Landon became angry.

It hadn't changed because I felt guilty.

It hadn't changed because the conversation was uncomfortable.

The boundary held.

And I was beginning to understand that the boundary could remain even if the discomfort did too.

I thought about what Dad had said earlier.

Some people expected others to clean up the consequences of their choices.

I had done that for Landon too often.

That was the pattern I needed to end.

Not by arguing louder.

Not by humiliating him.

Not by proving that I was stronger than he was.

Simply by refusing to restore access he had no right to demand.

I let myself sit with that decision.

For the first time, I wasn't measuring whether the conversation had gone well by how satisfied Landon sounded.

I was measuring it by whether I had told the truth and protected what I was responsible for.

The truth was simple.

The company card belonged to the company.

Landon had no formal authority over it.

The divorce had been finalized.

And I had removed his access.

Those facts were enough.

I didn't need another argument to establish them.

I didn't need another apology to soften them.

I didn't need another compromise to make them acceptable.

I had spent twelve years believing that keeping Landon happy would make our life easier.

But the effort had left me afraid of decisions I had every right to make.

That morning, I finally stopped asking myself whether he would approve.

I already knew he didn't.

And for once, his disapproval wasn't going to change anything.

The company card remained declined.

I had not restored it.

Dad was still sitting across from me.

And although I couldn't erase the choices that had brought us here, I could make sure the next decision wasn't another surrender.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Had Finally Stopped Apologizing for Protecting My Company, but
