14 – The Longer Landon Objected, the More Clearly I Saw That I Had Spent Our Marriage Defending Rules He Had Never Been Entitled to Break

I had always believed a good explanation could solve a disagreement.

That belief had caused more trouble than I wanted to admit.

Some disagreements came from confusion.

Someone misunderstood a rule.

Someone missed an important detail.

Someone needed a little more information.

But not every argument worked that way.

Sometimes a person understood the rule perfectly well.

They simply didn't like what it meant for them.

That was the thought I couldn't shake while Landon remained on the phone.

He knew the card came through my company.

He knew he had never owned the business.

He knew he hadn't been appointed to manage its accounts.

Nothing about those facts was new.

Yet he was demanding the card be restored as though I had taken away something he was entitled to keep.

I thought about the conversations we'd had during our marriage.

There were too many to remember individually.

But the pattern was familiar.

I would raise a financial concern.

Landon would take offense.

The subject would change.

Suddenly, I would be trying to prove that I trusted my husband.

I would explain that I wasn't trying to control him.

I would explain that company money had to be handled properly.

I would explain that certain expenses needed to remain separate.

And somewhere in those explanations, I would begin to sound uncertain.

That was usually when I gave in.

Not because the facts had changed.

Because I was tired.

Because I wanted the argument to stop.

Because I still believed preserving the marriage meant keeping Landon comfortable.

I looked down at the phone.

It was strange to recognize how often I had treated his comfort as a responsibility.

Not his responsibility.

Mine.

If he felt mistrusted, I had to reassure him.

If he felt restricted, I had to reconsider.

If he became angry, I had to find a gentler way of explaining.

And if none of that worked, I usually made an exception.

I had thought I was choosing the marriage.

But I was also teaching myself to distrust my own judgment.

That was what troubled me now.

I wasn't inexperienced with financial decisions.

I knew how accounts worked.

I understood why business safeguards existed.

I knew there was a difference between using a supplementary card and having authority over company funds.

Yet I had allowed my husband's reaction to matter more than my professional judgment.

Looking back, that made me ashamed.

Not because I had trusted someone I loved.

Trust wasn't the mistake by itself.

The mistake was continuing to ignore the problems that appeared after I began questioning the arrangement.

I had noticed.

I had tried to make changes.

And each time I faced resistance, I stopped short of doing what I knew was necessary.

I remembered Dad's expression when I showed him the declined transaction.

He hadn't looked surprised.

At the time, that almost offended me.

Part of me wanted him to react as though Landon's behavior was completely unexpected.

I wanted someone to say that no reasonable person would assume a company card remained available after a divorce.

But Dad knew what I had allowed before the divorce.

He understood that Landon had become accustomed to access I never fully withdrew.

Why would the legal end of our marriage automatically change an expectation I had reinforced for years?

It wouldn't.

That was the uncomfortable answer.

I shifted in my chair.

Dad glanced toward me.

I didn't ask him anything.

I was still working through the consequences of what he'd already said.

He had described Landon as someone who expected another person to handle the consequences of his choices.

I couldn't know every thought in Landon's head.

I couldn't claim to understand exactly why he had tried the card.

But I could recognize the behavior.

He had attempted a payment.

The payment failed.

Instead of accepting that the card was no longer available, he called me demanding that I fix it.

It was the same pattern I had seen before.

An obstacle appeared.

Landon objected.

I was expected to remove the obstacle.

I thought about the word expected.

That was what made the situation so difficult.

Expectations didn't always need to be spoken aloud.

Sometimes they grew through repetition.

One person asked.

The other agreed.

The next time, the request came with less explanation.

Eventually, the favor stopped feeling like a favor.

It became something the other person assumed would continue.

I had watched that happen with the card.

And I had helped it happen by avoiding the argument that might have stopped it.

The card was never evidence of ownership.

It was evidence of permission.

Permission I had granted.

Permission I could withdraw.

I knew that now.

I had known it before.

But the difference was that I was no longer allowing the marriage to blur it.

The divorce was final.

Landon was my former husband.

His relationship to the company had not suddenly changed because of the divorce.

He had never had formal authority there.

What had changed was my willingness to keep allowing the same access.

I listened to the sounds behind him.

The club music seemed strangely distant.

I wondered whether anyone around him understood what the argument was actually about.

Perhaps they thought a card had malfunctioned.

Perhaps they knew nothing beyond the delay.

I couldn't say.

I wasn't there.

I wasn't going to invent explanations about what Landon had told anyone.

The facts I had were enough.

He tried to use company funds.

The transaction was declined.

He called me angry.

And he demanded that I restore access he was not entitled to maintain.

That was the whole immediate problem.

Everything else came from our history.

The years of avoiding arguments.

The safeguards that never quite finished the job.

The supplementary card I kept meaning to remove.

The guilt I felt whenever Landon accused me of treating our marriage like a business arrangement.

I used to believe that accusation meant I needed to be more generous.

Now I saw how easily it could be used to avoid the real question.

What authority did Landon actually have?

None of the authority he was behaving as though he possessed.

That was what mattered.

Not how offended he felt.

Not how uncomfortable the conversation became.

Not how badly I wanted to end it.

I looked at Dad.

He was still watching me.

I wondered whether he could tell that I was finally beginning to separate two ideas I had confused for years.

I could care about someone without giving them unlimited access.

I could be fair without agreeing to every demand.

And I could protect a business without asking my former husband's permission.

I lowered my eyes.

My fingers were still resting against the phone.

For the first time, I didn't feel the need to find another explanation.

I had given Landon the facts.

If he disliked them, repeating them wouldn't necessarily change his mind.

And I was no longer willing to sacrifice the boundary simply because he refused to accept it.

The club sounds continued.

The transaction remained declined.

I had nothing new to add.

That realization brought me a small amount of relief.

For twelve years, I had believed I needed to keep talking until Landon was satisfied.

Now I understood that the decision could stand without his agreement.

And it did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Remembered
