8 – I Had Spent Twelve Years Trying to Keep Landon Happy, but His Declined Payment Finally Made the Boundary Between Us Real

I used to believe the hardest part of ending my marriage would be signing the final papers.

I was wrong.

The papers ended our legal relationship.

They didn't immediately end the habits I had built around Landon.

Those were still with me.

I could hear them in my thoughts while he remained on the phone.

Explain yourself.

Be careful.

Don't make him angrier.

Find a way to settle it.

I had lived by those instructions for so long that they felt almost automatic.

Even now, after our divorce was final, I was tempted to follow them.

I was sitting with Dad.

Landon was at a luxury club.

Tessa was somewhere near him.

The company card had been declined.

And still, some part of me wanted to make the conversation easier for my former husband.

I hated recognizing that.

But I would rather admit it than pretend I had suddenly become fearless.

I hadn't.

I was uncomfortable.

I was tired.

And I was still learning what it meant to say no without turning the answer into a negotiation.

Dad watched me.

He had already said what needed saying.

I had given Landon access over the years.

I had allowed that access to become too broad.

And I had repeatedly backed away whenever he treated financial restrictions as an insult to our marriage.

I couldn't change those decisions now.

But I could stop repeating them.

I looked at the phone.

The declined charge was still there.

It was a reminder of something I had overlooked during all those arguments.

An account didn't belong to the person who became most upset when access was restricted.

Ownership didn't depend on who complained loudest.

Authority didn't appear simply because someone had grown accustomed to using a card.

Those things had formal meanings.

Landon had never occupied the positions that would have given him control over the company.

He wasn't an employee.

He wasn't a director.

He wasn't a shareholder.

He wasn't authorized to sign on its accounts.

I knew those facts as clearly as I knew my own name.

Yet I had spent years allowing him to make them feel negotiable.

That was the part I needed to face.

The company had responsibilities that extended beyond making my marriage comfortable.

I couldn't protect it properly while treating every necessary restriction as a question about whether I loved my husband enough.

And now Landon was no longer my husband.

The last excuse I had relied on was gone.

I heard his voice again.

The anger was familiar.

I knew how easily I could have fallen into the same routine.

He would insist I had treated him unfairly.

I would begin explaining.

Eventually, I would become more concerned about calming him down than defending the decision itself.

That was how the card had remained available for so long.

I wasn't proud of it.

But I was no longer pretending not to understand it.

I took a slow breath.

Dad shifted in his chair.

Neither of us said anything for a moment.

The silence made me aware of how much of my life I had spent trying to fill spaces like that.

Whenever Landon was angry, I would rush to offer an explanation.

If he stayed quiet, I would keep talking.

If he sounded offended, I would soften my words.

I rarely gave myself enough time to consider whether I had anything to apologize for.

This time, I did.

I considered the facts.

The divorce had been finalized that morning.

The card had been provided through my company.

Landon had no official authority there.

I had changed the PINs.

He had attempted to use the card anyway.

The payment hadn't been approved.

There was nothing in that sequence requiring me to reverse the restriction.

Nothing.

I let the thought settle.

For years, I had imagined that being firm would make me cold.

That protecting the company's money would mean treating my marriage as nothing more than a business arrangement.

Landon had used that accusation often enough that I had started repeating it to myself.

But I understood something different now.

A marriage could involve trust without giving one person unrestricted access to the other's business.

A spouse could be respected without being made an owner.

And a boundary could be necessary even when someone disliked it.

I hadn't been cruel for wanting those distinctions.

I had been frightened of what insisting on them might cost me.

Now the marriage was already over.

That loss had happened.

I couldn't protect something that no longer existed by surrendering another decision.

I looked at Dad.

He didn't smile.

There was nothing to celebrate about how we had reached this moment.

A twelve-year marriage had ended.

My former husband was furious.

And I was only now confronting the full extent of how much I had allowed his reactions to influence my financial decisions.

It wasn't a clean feeling.

It wasn't triumph.

It was the uncomfortable relief of finally recognizing a problem without making another excuse for it.

I thought about the supplementary card.

A simple piece of plastic that had once seemed like a practical convenience.

For travel.

For household expenses.

For a marriage I had expected to last.

Somewhere along the way, it had become a symbol of an arrangement neither of us was treating honestly.

Landon behaved as though the permission would continue indefinitely.

And I behaved as though withdrawing it required him to agree that I was being fair.

Neither assumption was right.

Dad had helped me recognize the first.

I had to confront the second myself.

The sounds from the club continued in the background.

I could still hear people talking.

Tessa was nearby.

Landon was waiting for me to respond the way I always had.

I felt the old urge one more time.

Fix it.

Explain.

Give in.

Instead, I kept my voice level.

"The company card isn't yours to use anymore."

I didn't add an apology.

I didn't offer another arrangement.

I didn't turn the statement into a question.

There were still things about the future I didn't know.

I couldn't predict every argument Landon might make.

I couldn't say what he expected to happen after that call.

And I couldn't pretend our financial separation had been handled perfectly.

It hadn't.

That was why Dad's advice mattered.

That was why the PINs mattered.

And that was why the declined transaction had become something more than an inconvenient payment.

It showed me that a restriction I had finally put in place could remain in place even when Landon objected.

I looked at the phone.

Then at Dad.

For twelve years, I had been afraid that refusing Landon would damage our marriage.

That morning, there was no marriage left to damage.

There was only the company I was responsible for, the access I had allowed, and the decision I needed to maintain.

The payment was still declined.

I had not restored the card.

And I was finally prepared to let Landon be unhappy about it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Landon Kept Waiting for
