We know that the record includes a death designation. We know my Social Security number is connected to that case."

"Those are the facts we've discussed."

"But we haven't established that I am the child, and we haven't established what evidence supported the death designation."

"Correct."

I let the words settle.

They were not new, but saying them aloud helped me hear how carefully the facts had to be separated.

"And we haven't established why my number is connected to the case."

"That is also correct."

I opened my notebook.

"Can the review determine whether the connection is an error?"

"It may be possible to determine that, depending on what the available records establish."

"And if it can't determine the cause?"

"Then the cause may remain unresolved even if some aspects of the discrepancy can be clarified."

I wrote that down.

I had asked a similar question before, but I needed to understand the practical meaning of the answer.

It was possible that the investigation could identify a problem without reconstructing every event that had led to it.

I did not like the thought of an incomplete explanation.

But an incomplete explanation was still better than an invented one.

"Is there anything you need from me right now?" I asked.

"Not at present. If additional documents or information become necessary, I'll explain what is needed."

"What about the references to earlier records that I showed you?"

"I've noted the information you provided. Whether those references can help identify relevant material depends on what records are available and whether they can be matched reliably."

"So I should keep them, but not assume they lead anywhere."

"Exactly."

I nodded.

That answer gave me something concrete to do.

I would preserve the papers and keep the list of references.

I would not treat the existence of a reference number as proof that the document behind it still existed or contained the answer I wanted.

I turned to a clean page in my notebook.

"There is one thing I need to ask directly," I said.

"Go ahead."

"Does anything you've told me mean that I should consider myself guilty of using someone else's identity?"

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"No. Based on the information available to me, I have no basis to say that you knowingly used a false identity."

I looked at him.

"I know you have said that before. I needed to hear it clearly again."

"I understand."

I had been carrying a fear that was difficult to explain.

It was not only the possibility that my history might be different from what I believed.

It was also the thought that an official discrepancy could somehow make every decision I had made as an adult seem questionable.

Marcus had not told me that my identity was fully established.

He had not told me that the historical connection was harmless.

But he had made one thing clear: the information available to him did not establish that I had knowingly done anything wrong.

That mattered.

I thanked him.

Then I asked about the process if the review eventually established an error.

"If an error is confirmed, what would happen first?"

"The appropriate procedure would depend on the nature of the finding. You would need an explanation of what had been established and what steps were available to address it."

"Would the historical record and my current identity records be examined separately?"

"They may require separate actions, depending on what the evidence shows."

I wrote that down, too.

I was no longer trying to make the case sound simpler than it was.

I wanted to understand each part well enough that I would know what questions to ask when information became available.

Marcus glanced at the folder on his desk.

"I want to be careful not to make this sound more settled than it is," he said. "We still need verified information before we can draw conclusions about the historical case."

"I understand."

"I also don't want you to believe that the lack of an immediate answer means your concerns are being dismissed."

"I don't think that anymore."

He looked up.

I explained that I had spent time organizing my documents and separating facts from questions.

I told him I had contacted someone from my past but had not received any information that changed what I knew.

I did not describe the conversation as a failure.

The person had answered honestly as far as they could remember.

That was all I could reasonably expect.

Marcus listened and said that it was useful to keep any personal recollections clearly distinguished from documented facts.

I agreed.

Before the meeting ended, I asked whether he would contact me if the review produced a finding that could be shared.

"Yes," he said. "If there is verified information relevant to your case that I can discuss, I'll explain it to you."

I stood and put my notebook away.

"Thank you for being direct with me."

"I know this has been difficult."

"It has."

I paused at the door.

"But I don't want an answer that sounds certain just because I need it to be certain."

Marcus nodded.

"That's understandable."

I left the office and walked toward the parking lot.

The meeting had not resolved the case.

I still did not know who the historical child was or what had happened after the disappearance.

I did not know why the record contained a death designation or how my number had become connected to it.

But I had asked what I needed to ask.

I knew what the investigation was trying to establish.

I knew what it had not established.

And I knew that no one had given me a basis to conclude that I had knowingly used a false identity.

That was not the whole answer.

It was an important part of the truth available to me at that moment.

I drove home with the notebook on the passenger seat.

At a red light, I glanced at it and remembered the question I had written months earlier.

What is the earliest verified record connecting my name to my Social Security number?

I still wanted an answer.

I was no longer willing to accept a guess in its place.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Learned to Live With the Questions Without Pretending They Had Disappeared, and I Prepared for Whatever the Records Could Honestly Tell Me

Marcus called the following week to arrange another meeting.
