I opened each drawer and checked behind the folders, while Jennifer sorted the papers into piles.

Bills.

Insurance documents.

Old tax returns.

Receipts from repairs.

Nothing looked unusual until Jennifer found an envelope tucked inside a folder marked HOUSE.

It had no stamp and no address.

Only Eleanor's handwriting on the front.

For Martin — if he returns.

Jennifer handed it to me without opening it.

“Do you want me to leave you alone?”

“No. Stay.”

I eased the flap open.

Inside were two sheets of paper, folded together. The first was a short note written in Eleanor's hand.

The second was a photocopy of a document with several lines blacked out.

I read the note first.

It said that Martin had contacted her again after a long period of silence. He had asked for records she no longer possessed and wanted to know whether she still had the original list.

Eleanor wrote that she had refused to meet him alone.

She also wrote that she had not told me because she believed the matter would end if she stopped responding.

At the bottom, she had added a date.

It was nearly twenty years old.

Jennifer read the note after I finished.

“Does it say what the list was?”

“No.”

“Could it be the pages from the notebook?”

“I don't know.”

I unfolded the photocopy.

It appeared to be part of a property document, with a legal description, a date, and a series of names. Most of the relevant lines had been obscured with thick black ink.

One name remained visible.

Eleanor Bennett.

Another was Martin Hale.

The third was too blurred to read.

I looked at the date again.

It was several years after the photograph had been taken, but long before Eleanor and I had grown old.

The document carried a reference number and the name of a local title office.

I wrote both down.

“This is something we can verify,” I said.

Jennifer nodded.

“Should we call Mr. Bennett?”

“Yes, but first I'll send him a copy.”

I scanned the document and note, then sent them to the attorney with a brief explanation. I kept the originals in a separate folder.

While we waited for a response, Jennifer continued sorting the household papers.

She found a receipt for a small metal storage box, purchased from a hardware store that had closed years earlier.

The date was close to the date on the note to Martin.

“Could this be the tin you remember?” I asked.

“Possibly. But the receipt doesn't say what the box was for.”

The amount was small.

I put it with the other documents.

A few minutes later, Jennifer found a folded sheet inside an old recipe book.

It was a handwritten list of dates and amounts.

No names.

No explanation.

The numbers were arranged in columns, as if Eleanor had been tracking payments over several months.

I compared the dates with the fragments we had recovered from the green notebook.

Two matched.

The amounts were not identical, but they were close enough to suggest that the list might be connected.

I wrote the dates on a separate sheet.

Then I stopped.

It would be easy to make every number fit a theory I already believed.

I reminded myself that the attorney had warned me about that.

We placed the list in a clear sleeve and added it to the folder.

By lunchtime, the study looked as though we had been sorting the paperwork for an estate sale.

Every surface held a stack of documents.

Jennifer made sandwiches, and we ate at the kitchen table among the folders.

“Do you think Mom did something wrong?” she asked.

I took a moment before answering.

“I think she kept something from me. I don't know yet why she did it.”

“Could she have been helping someone?”

“Yes.”

“Could she have been protecting someone?”

“Yes.”

“Could she have been afraid?”

I looked at the envelope addressed to Martin.

“Yes,” I said. “That is possible, too.”

Jennifer folded the corner of her napkin.

“I wish she'd told us.”

“So do I.”

After lunch, Mr. Bennett called.

He had received the scans and recognized the document format as an old property-transfer record. He couldn't identify the transaction from the photocopy alone, but the reference number might lead to an archived filing.

He recommended that we contact the county records office and request a search.

“Should I come with you?” Jennifer asked after I ended the call.

“I think so.”

She seemed surprised.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. If this involves something your mother kept hidden from both of us, you deserve to understand it, too.”

We called the records office and learned that the old reference system had been replaced. The clerk explained what information we would need to submit and said that archived files might take several days to locate.

I wrote down the instructions.

There was no dramatic discovery that afternoon.

No sudden confession.

No person appearing at the door with an explanation.

There was only paperwork, an old reference number, and the possibility that someone might still have a record of what happened.

It felt slow.

But slow was better than guessing.

Later, Jennifer went to the grocery store while I returned the folders to the study.

I took the necklace out of its box and examined the pendant.

The hidden compartment was small enough to escape notice unless someone knew where to look. I could understand how it had remained undiscovered for so many years.

I also understood why Eleanor might have chosen it.

A piece of jewelry could be kept close without attracting attention.

It could pass from one room to another without anyone wondering why it mattered.

I placed the folded note back in its sleeve and returned it to the box.

Then I opened the wooden box itself.

The small scratch on its inside edge caught my eye.

I ran a finger over it.

The mark was shallow, with a darker line near the corner. It might have been caused by the necklace chain, or by something being pushed into the box.

I tilted the box toward the light.

There was a tiny paper fiber caught in the seam beneath the lining.

I used a pair of tweezers to lift it free.

It was too small to read, and it tore when I tried to unfold it.

I stopped immediately.

I did not want to destroy another fragment while trying to force it to tell me something.

I placed it in a small envelope and labeled it with the date.

Then I sat back and looked at the objects on the desk.

The photograph.

The green notebook.

The address book.

The envelope for Martin.

The necklace and its box.

None of them offered a complete explanation.

Together, though, they showed that Eleanor had been dealing with something that involved money, property records, and a man she had once warned me about.

That was enough to justify continuing.

It was not enough to decide what kind of woman she had been.

Jennifer returned with groceries and found me putting the papers away.

“Any progress?”

“A little.”

I told her about the records office.

She set the bags on the counter.

“Then we wait for them to find the file.”

“Yes.”

She took the bread out and placed it in the cupboard.

For once, neither of us tried to force the conversation further.

That evening, I sat in Eleanor's chair by the window and thought about the years we had spent together.

I remembered her making lists before trips, checking the doors at night, and keeping every receipt until she was sure the bill had been paid.

I remembered the way she would pause before answering a difficult question.

I had always thought those pauses meant she was choosing her words carefully.

Now I wondered how many times she had been deciding what she could safely tell me.

The thought hurt.

But I also remembered the note inside the pendant.

It had not asked me to hate Martin.

It had not asked me to accuse anyone.

It had asked me to keep the pieces together and learn what had been kept from me.

I could do that.

I turned off the lamp and left the folders locked in the study.

For the first time since the necklace disappeared, I did not feel compelled to search the house for another hidden object.

We had found enough to take the next step.

Now we needed the records to speak for themselves.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The County Records Office Found a Transfer That Eleanor Had Never Told Me About

The next morning, Jennifer and I searched the house more carefully.
