I'll answer my own door.”

He sat back.

I hadn't meant the words as a reprimand.

But I noticed how they sounded.

I was capable of answering a door.

I was capable of making tea.

I was capable of choosing where to live.

These were such ordinary abilities that I almost felt foolish having to demonstrate them.

I walked into the hallway.

The house felt familiar beneath my feet.

The rug.

The wooden floor.

The small creak near the entrance.

Raymond had once promised to fix that creak.

He never got around to it.

After he died, I stopped wanting it fixed.

It reminded me of him.

I reached the door.

For a moment, I rested my hand on the handle.

Then I opened it.

The man from downtown stood outside.

The same person Raymond had trusted for years when important papers needed attention.

I had spoken to him earlier that morning.

I had told him about the accidental call.

I had told him why I was worried.

He had agreed to come with the records that mattered.

Seeing him there made me feel steadier.

Not because I expected him to fight for me.

Because I knew I would not have to examine everything alone.

“Thank you for coming,” I said.

He greeted me warmly.

Then he looked toward the house.

“Shall we?”

I stepped aside.

“Please.”

He entered.

I closed the door behind him.

For a moment, I thought of Raymond walking through that same hallway with documents under his arm.

Raymond had always preferred to handle serious matters at the kitchen table.

He said he could think better there.

Perhaps that was why I had arranged everything as I had.

The good cups.

The fourth chair.

The papers waiting where we could see them.

I led my guest into the kitchen.

Mark stood when we entered.

Alicia remained seated for a moment longer.

Then she rose too.

I could see the surprise on both their faces.

They had not expected anyone else.

That was clear.

I introduced the man as someone Raymond had relied on for help with important paperwork.

I explained that he knew the history of our home.

Mark looked uncomfortable.

Alicia gave a polite smile.

“How nice of you to come.”

My guest returned the greeting.

He did not seem interested in making the morning dramatic.

That was a relief.

I had not invited him for drama.

I had invited him because documents mattered.

And because I wanted an experienced person to help me understand them before I made any decision.

I gestured toward the empty chair.

“I saved you a place.”

He thanked me and sat down.

I poured his tea.

Alicia watched the movement.

The fourth cup was no longer an unanswered question.

It belonged to someone who knew about the house.

Someone who had not been included in Alicia's plan.

I sat beside the folder.

For a few moments, nobody spoke.

Then I looked at my guest.

“Mark and Alicia have brought some papers they wanted me to consider.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

I glanced at Mark.

“They concern a possible move.”

Mark looked down.

“And there have also been discussions about my property.”

Alicia shifted.

“Dorothy, we haven't agreed to sell anything.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

That surprised her.

I continued.

“That's why I want to understand what you've brought before anything happens.”

My guest looked toward the folder.

I moved it closer.

“These are the papers.”

He did not begin making claims about them.

He did not announce that anyone had done something illegal.

He simply asked to examine what was there.

I appreciated that.

The truth did not need exaggeration.

I had heard a plan.

I had seen the brochure.

I knew my son and his wife had spoken to Bruce about the property.

I knew they had brought documents they expected me to consider signing.

Those were the facts.

Anything beyond them needed to be checked.

I watched my guest open the folder.

He moved slowly.

Not because he was confused.

Because he was careful.

Raymond had liked that about him.

He had trusted people who didn't rush important decisions.

Alicia leaned forward.

“Most of this is just routine.”

My guest looked at the papers.

He continued reading.

I could see that Alicia wanted to explain.

She was accustomed to doing that.

She liked to tell people what things meant before they had time to examine them themselves.

But my guest didn't hurry.

He looked at the first page.

Then the next.

I sat quietly.

For once, I didn't feel responsible for filling the silence.

Mark watched him.

I could see the tension in my son's face.

I wondered whether he had expected the papers to be reviewed by someone familiar with the house.

I doubted it.

But I didn't ask.

That wasn't necessary.

The documents were now on the table.

And someone other than Alicia was reading them.

My guest paused.

He asked a question about the proposed arrangement.

Alicia answered.

He listened.

Then he asked another.

Mark tried to explain part of it.

I watched the conversation move back and forth.

No shouting.

No accusations.

Just questions.

That was what I had wanted all morning.

Simple questions that deserved clear answers.

I thought again about the phone call.

Alicia had been so confident.

She had laughed about my willingness to sign.

She had suggested having my glasses taken away.

Now my glasses rested securely on my nose.

And the papers were being examined by someone who understood why that mattered.

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the street remained quiet.

Eleanor's house stood across from mine.

I wondered whether she had noticed the visitor arrive.

I had asked her to watch for a reason.

But I wasn't going to involve her unless necessary.

The room already contained enough people.

Enough memories.

Enough uncomfortable truths.

My guest turned another page.

Then he looked at me.

“Dorothy, before we go any further, I want to make sure I understand what you want.”

The question caught me off guard.

Not because it was difficult.

Because nobody else had asked it so directly.

Alicia had told me what would be easier.

Mark had told me what might be safer.

They had discussed opportunities.

Responsibilities.

Possible arrangements.

But neither had begun with the simplest question.

What did I want?

I looked down at my hands.

Then I raised my eyes.

“I want to remain in my home.”

The words came easily.

That surprised me.

I had spent the entire morning defending something I already knew.

My guest nodded.

“Then we begin there.”

Alicia looked at Mark.

He kept his eyes on the table.

I felt a small release inside my chest.

Not happiness.

Not victory.

Relief.

The conversation had finally begun with my wishes.

That should have happened from the start.

I looked at the folder again.

I knew the morning was not over.

There were still things Mark and Alicia had not explained.

There were still questions about the house.

And I had not yet told them how much I had heard.

But something important had changed.

I was no longer sitting opposite two people who expected me to accept their version of events.

I was sitting at my own table with someone who had asked what I wanted.

And this time, I answered without apologizing.

<a
