Your comfort and your future.”

I looked toward the hallway.

The house was quiet.

The same familiar quiet I had known for four years.

I could hear a faint sound from outside.

Nothing unusual.

A passing car.

A distant door closing.

The world continued as though nothing important were happening.

But something important was happening.

I was sitting at my kitchen table learning how much of my life had been discussed without me.

I turned back to Alicia.

“Then let's talk about what I want.”

She smiled.

“Of course.”

“I want to stay in my home.”

Her smile weakened.

“For now?”

I shook my head.

“I haven't set a date for leaving.”

She looked at Mark.

I watched him lower his eyes.

I wondered whether they had ever considered that answer.

Not a refusal based on fear.

Not confusion.

Not stubbornness.

A simple choice.

I wanted to remain where I lived.

Alicia folded her hands.

“We understand that you're attached to the house.”

Attached.

I thought about that word.

It was technically true.

I was attached to the house.

But the word sounded too small for what it meant.

Raymond and I had raised Mark there.

We had paid bills there.

We had celebrated birthdays.

We had argued and made up.

We had spent ordinary evenings in front of the television.

We had lived through difficult years.

And good ones.

After Raymond died, I had sat alone in the living room and tried to imagine a future without him.

The house held all of that.

Calling me attached made it sound as though I simply liked the wallpaper.

I looked at Alicia.

“It's more than something I'm attached to.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

But I wasn't sure she did.

Perhaps she couldn't.

It wasn't her home.

She hadn't spent decades building a life inside it.

She saw rooms.

A roof.

A price.

I saw the place where my family had once been whole.

Neither view changed the legal facts.

But I wanted her to understand why I wasn't going to treat the house as something easily exchanged for a brochure.

Mark cleared his throat.

“Mom, nobody expects you to forget Dad.”

I looked at him.

That hurt.

Not because the words were cruel.

Because he seemed to think my attachment to the house was only about grief.

It wasn't.

Raymond mattered.

Of course he did.

But I mattered too.

I still lived here.

I still had mornings to enjoy.

Meals to prepare.

Neighbors to visit.

Decisions to make.

The house wasn't simply a memorial to my husband.

It was my home now.

“I know,” I said.

Mark nodded.

I continued.

“But this isn't only about your father.”

He looked at me.

“It's about where I want to live.”

He lowered his eyes.

Alicia reached for the brochure again.

“Silver Meadows could give you some wonderful opportunities.”

I looked at the cover.

“Then perhaps someday I'll decide to visit.”

She leaned forward.

“That's what we've been hoping.”

I shook my head slightly.

“Visiting isn't agreeing to move.”

She stopped.

I continued.

“And agreeing to move wouldn't mean I've agreed to sell this house.”

That changed the room.

I saw it immediately.

Mark straightened.

Alicia's fingers stopped moving.

For the first time since they arrived, neither seemed ready with an answer.

I placed one hand on the closed folder.

“I've been thinking about what would happen to the property.”

Alicia watched me.

I kept my voice calm.

“If I moved somewhere else, the house would still belong to me.”

Mark nodded.

“Right.”

“So why are we talking as though it must be sold?”

Alicia blinked.

“We haven't said it must be sold.”

I looked at her.

I remembered the conversation in the car.

The exact amount.

The realtor.

The lake trip.

The boat.

I had heard her discuss the sale as though it were already decided.

Now she was sitting across from me saying nothing had been decided.

I didn't know whether she believed her own version.

Perhaps she was simply trying to keep the conversation manageable.

I could not know.

I only knew what she had said when she thought I wasn't listening.

I turned toward Mark.

“What do you think should happen to the house?”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Mom, we'd have to look at everything.”

I waited.

He looked at Alicia.

She began speaking.

“There are practical considerations.”

I raised one hand gently.

“I'd like Mark to answer.”

She stopped.

Mark looked uncomfortable.

I felt the old instinct rise.

The desire to rescue him.

To tell him he didn't have to answer.

To say we could talk another time.

I let the feeling pass.

He was capable of answering.

He needed to.

“If I moved,” I said, “would you want the house sold?”

He looked down.

Then he nodded.

“I think we'd have to consider it.”

I felt a heaviness settle in my chest.

At least he had said something.

Not the whole truth.

But something.

“Why?”

He looked at the table.

“Because leaving it empty wouldn't make much sense.”

I considered that.

A house could be left empty.

A house could be rented.

A house could be kept for later.

There were choices.

And those choices belonged to its owner.

I wasn't required to accept the first explanation someone gave me.

I looked at Mark.

“That's a decision I would make.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I wondered whether he truly understood.

Alicia leaned forward.

“Dorothy, no one is trying to take away your choices.”

I looked at her.

“Then let's keep them with me.”

She sat back.

There was no anger in my voice.

I was almost surprised by that.

A younger version of me might have shouted.

A more frightened version might have cried.

But I had spent the morning listening.

Writing.

Thinking.

And preparing.

I wasn't going to lose control of the conversation simply because the truth was painful.

I remembered Bruce.

The realtor who had visited twice.

I pictured him standing in the living room.

Looking toward the ceiling.

Asking questions.

Admiring the molding.

At the time, I had felt pleased.

It is nice when someone appreciates your home.

Especially when you've spent years caring for it.

But now I wondered how much of his interest had been professional.

I couldn't know.

I hadn't heard him discuss my house.

I hadn't spoken to him about selling it.

I only knew Alicia had mentioned him in the car.

That was enough reason to ask.

“Has Bruce been involved in these discussions?”

Mark looked up sharply.

Alicia stared at me.

There was a moment of complete stillness.

I could almost hear them deciding who should answer.

Alicia spoke first.

“Bruce?”

I nodded.

“Yes. Your friend who sells houses.”

She glanced at Mark.

“What made you think of him?”

I kept my expression neutral.

“He's been here twice.”

“That was just a visit.”

I looked at her.

“I remember.”

She gave a small laugh.

“He liked the house.”

I nodded.

“So I was told.”

Mark shifted.

I turned toward him.

“Have you asked Bruce about the value of my property?”

He looked at Alicia.

Again.

I had grown tired of that movement.

I wanted to ask him whether he could remember how to answer without permission.

But I didn't.

Sarcasm would have made me feel better for perhaps a second.

It wouldn't have helped me learn anything.

Mark finally spoke.

“We've talked about the house.”

I kept my voice steady.

“With Bruce?”

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

There it was.

One more piece.

I had already heard it during the call.

But hearing Mark acknowledge it while sitting in my kitchen mattered.

I looked at him for a long moment.

“Without asking me?”

He looked down.

Alicia leaned forward.

“Dorothy, it wasn't anything official.”

I turned toward her.

“That wasn't my question.”

She became quiet.

I looked back at Mark.

He didn't answer.

I could feel the hurt rising again.

Not sharp this time.

Heavy.

Tired.

I thought about the forty thousand dollars I had given them.

I remembered Mark thanking me.

I remembered believing my gift had helped his family feel secure.

Now he had discussed the value of my home with a realtor without telling me.

I wanted to ask when he had begun seeing my property as part of his plans.

But I knew the answer might not be simple.

And I wanted the conversation to remain clear.

I looked at the closed folder.

Then at my son.

“I wish you'd spoken to me first.”

He raised his eyes.

For the first time that morning, he looked directly at me without checking Alicia's expression.

“So do I, Mom.”

I didn't know whether he meant it.

But I heard him.

And I let the words remain where they were.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Had Given My Son Forty Thousand Dollars to Help His Family, Yet He Sat Before Me Discussing a House I Had Already Paid For

Alicia was quiet for almost a minute.
