I can do that.”

Four words.

I wrote them down.

My hand remained on the paper afterward.

For a moment, I forgot about the house.

I forgot about Silver Meadows.

I forgot about Bruce and his estimate.

All I could think about was the expression Mark planned to wear when he came through my front door.

He was going to look sad.

Not necessarily because he felt sad.

Because Alicia had told him sadness would help.

I tried to tell myself he might still be uncertain.

He had questioned the speed of the plan.

He had sounded uncomfortable.

Perhaps he was afraid of upsetting his wife.

Perhaps he hoped everything would work itself out.

I could think of explanations all day.

I was his mother.

Finding explanations for him was a habit I had practiced since he was small.

But none of those explanations changed what he had said.

He had agreed.

Not to ask how I felt.

Not to give me time to think.

Not to speak honestly.

To act.

That was when the hurt became simple.

My son knew they were planning to deceive me.

And he had decided to help.

I put my free hand over my mouth.

I wasn't crying.

Not then.

I was trying to keep myself from making a noise.

I didn't want them to hear me.

I wanted the conversation to finish exactly as it would have if I had never answered.

That may sound calculating.

Perhaps it was.

But I had already spent enough of my life giving people chances to explain away things I knew I had seen.

I wasn't going to make that mistake with something this important.

The car continued moving.

I heard the turn signal again.

Alicia said something about handling the discussion when they arrived.

Mark responded quietly.

I could hear the tiredness in his voice.

And for one instant, I wondered whether he had been persuaded to do something he hated.

Then I remembered the boat.

The trip.

The estimated sale price.

He hadn't been silent through all of that.

He had been there.

He had known.

He had brought the folder.

I stared at my notes.

There it was.

A whole plan spread across two small yellow pages.

The timing.

The papers.

The excuse involving my glasses.

The residential community.

The realtor.

The price.

The performance.

I didn't know exactly what the documents said.

I hadn't seen them.

I couldn't know whether Alicia believed she had a legal way to sell the house or simply hoped she could persuade me to sign one.

That distinction was important.

I refused to add anything to the story that I hadn't actually heard.

But the intention was plain enough.

They wanted control of something that belonged to me.

And they intended to get it while pretending to care about my comfort.

At 7:34, the call disconnected.

The sound vanished so abruptly that I kept the phone against my ear for several seconds.

Then I looked at the screen.

The call had ended.

Nineteen minutes.

I placed the phone on the table.

Very carefully.

I didn't throw it.

I didn't shout.

I didn't call Mark back.

I sat still and listened to the refrigerator humming.

The house sounded enormous.

For years, people had told me I was lucky to have a home like mine.

A house with enough room for visitors.

A pleasant kitchen.

A quiet street.

A garden Raymond had enjoyed.

After he died, there were days when the empty rooms felt like more space than I needed.

I had wondered whether moving somewhere smaller might be sensible someday.

Someday.

That was a word I wanted to choose for myself.

Not a deadline somebody else set.

Not a plan attached to a boat.

I reached for my tea.

The cup felt cool against my fingers.

I took a sip and immediately regretted it.

Cold.

Bitter.

I carried it to the sink.

I poured it away.

That was the first thing I did after hearing my future discussed by two people who thought I had no voice in it.

Such a small thing.

But I remember it.

I remember the sound of the liquid hitting the sink.

I remember setting the cup upside down beside the faucet.

I remember looking at the empty chair where Raymond used to sit.

He would have been furious.

Not loud.

Raymond rarely shouted.

When he was angry, he became very quiet.

He would take out the paperwork.

Read every line.

Then ask the question that nobody else wanted to answer.

What gives you the right?

I could almost hear him saying it.

And suddenly, I knew what I had to do.

I went back to the table.

I straightened the pages.

I wrote the date across the top of the first sheet.

Then I read everything I had written.

Slowly.

Twice.

I checked the times against what I remembered.

I separated the things I had heard clearly from the phrases I had only partly caught.

I didn't want mistakes.

I especially didn't want to accuse Mark of something he hadn't said.

I had enough truth in front of me.

There was no need to improve upon it.

At the bottom of the second page, I wrote one more reminder.

DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.

I stared at those words.

They should have been unnecessary.

A woman my age should not have to remind herself to be careful around her own family.

But there they were.

And I needed them.

I sat down again.

My first instinct was to call Mark and demand an explanation.

My second was to ask Alicia what she thought she was doing.

Neither would help.

If I confronted them immediately, they would know I had heard everything.

They might deny it.

They might change their story.

They might decide to arrive without the folder.

I wanted to see what they would do when they believed I knew nothing.

That wasn't revenge.

It was the only way I could think of to understand how far they were willing to go.

I didn't need to frighten anybody.

I didn't need to embarrass them in public.

I simply needed to protect myself.

And I needed people beside me who would not be fooled by a sad face.

I picked up my phone.

I thought about whom I could trust.

One name came to me immediately.

Eleanor.

She had lived next door for forty years.

She remembered Raymond before his hair went gray.

She remembered Mark before he learned to ride a bicycle.

She had seen enough of our family to know how much I loved my son.

And she had never mistaken politeness for honesty.

I knew she would listen.

More importantly, I knew she would not dismiss me because I was old.

I pressed her number.

As the phone rang, I looked again at the yellow notepad.

I had spent nineteen minutes listening to people make plans for my future.

Now it was my turn to make a decision.

And for the first time that morning, I felt certain about what I was going to do next.

<a
