The sky had cleared, leaving the pavement dark and damp beneath the trees. She parked beside the garden wall and noticed that the front gate had been left open. A cardboard box stood on the porch, filled with discarded packaging from the furniture they had recently bought.

Daniel opened the door before she knocked.

He looked as though he had barely slept. His hair was uncombed, and he wore the same sweatshirt she remembered seeing during their conversation two nights earlier. He stepped aside without greeting her properly.

“Sarah's at work?” Eleanor asked.

“She left early.”

“Is everything all right?”

He closed the door and rubbed his face.

“Can we sit down first?”

They went into the kitchen. The room smelled faintly of coffee and fresh paint. A stack of unopened mail sat beside the toaster, and a notebook lay open near the sink. Eleanor noticed several numbers written on the page, along with dates and short notes she could not read from where she stood.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“I haven't told Sarah everything,” he said.

Eleanor sat opposite him. “Everything about what?”

He stared at the table.

“The money.”

She waited.

“Before you bought the house, I told you we were having trouble with the mortgage application. That was true, but it wasn't the whole story.”

Eleanor felt her stomach tighten. “What else was happening?”

Daniel explained that he had accumulated more debt than he had admitted. Several years earlier, he had taken out a personal loan to cover expenses after his employer reduced his hours. He had expected his income to recover quickly, but the payments became difficult to manage. He then relied on credit cards, telling himself that the situation would improve after his next promotion.

The promotion came, but so did a series of unexpected expenses. He began shifting balances between accounts and using new credit to cover old obligations.

“I kept thinking I could fix it before anyone noticed,” he said.

“Does Sarah know?”

“Some of it.”

“What does that mean?”

“She knows about the loan. She doesn't know how much is left on the cards.”

Eleanor looked at him for a long moment. She had known Daniel could be impulsive with money, but she had never imagined the problem had become this extensive.

“How much do you owe?”

He gave her a figure.

Eleanor did not speak immediately. The amount was large enough to explain his anxiety, but it was not so extraordinary that it seemed impossible to address with proper advice and a realistic repayment plan.

“Why didn't you tell me?” she asked.

“Because you would have worried.”

“I was already worrying. I just didn't know what about.”

He looked up at her, and she saw shame in his expression.

“I didn't want you to think I was a failure.”

Eleanor reached across the table, then stopped before touching his hand. She wanted to comfort him, but she also knew that comfort could not replace an honest conversation.

“I don't think you're a failure because you made mistakes,” she said. “But hiding them makes it harder to solve them.”

“I know.”

“Does Sarah understand the full amount?”

“No.”

“Then you need to tell her.”

Daniel's shoulders tightened. “That's why I asked you to come alone. I need some time to work out how to explain it.”

Eleanor glanced at the open notebook near the sink. “Have you made a plan?”

“I'm trying to.”

“What does that plan involve?”

He hesitated.

“I thought if the house were transferred to us, we could use it as security for a loan. We could consolidate the debt, lower the payments, and make the renovations later.”

Eleanor felt the room grow still.

“Who suggested that?”

“Sarah's dad mentioned it as a possibility.”

“Does he know about your debt?”

“He knows I have some financial difficulties. Not the exact amount.”

“And did he tell you that I should transfer the house?”

“He said it would make things easier.”

Eleanor folded her hands on the table.

“Daniel, you were asking me to give up ownership of a house worth a great deal of money so you could borrow against it to pay debts you hadn't told me about.”

He flinched.

“When you put it like that, it sounds terrible.”

“I'm putting it plainly because I need you to understand the risk.”

“I wasn't trying to hurt you.”

“I believe that. But your intentions don't remove the consequences.”

He leaned forward, speaking more quickly now.

“I was scared. I thought I could sort it out without involving you. Then the house became a chance to start again. I thought if we could get the debt under control, everything would settle down.”

Eleanor understood the temptation. A large asset could make a financial crisis look manageable. It could also hide the underlying habits that had created the crisis in the first place.

“Have you stopped using the credit cards?” she asked.

“Mostly.”

“Mostly isn't a plan.”

Daniel looked down.

She asked whether he had spoken to a debt adviser or contacted his lenders about repayment options. He shook his head. He had been embarrassed to explain the situation to a stranger and had hoped that transferring the house would provide a quicker solution.

Eleanor told him that she would help him find qualified financial advice, but she would not put her own property at risk to conceal his debts. She would not give him money without understanding what it was for, and she would not promise to cover future shortfalls.

Daniel looked wounded.

“So you're just going to leave me to deal with it?”

“No. I'm going to help you deal with it. That is different from taking responsibility for it.”

He stood and walked to the window. For several seconds, he watched a neighbor reverse a car into a driveway.

“I thought you would understand,” he said.

“I do understand. I understand that you're frightened, and that you want to protect your marriage. I also understand that you cannot build a secure future by making decisions based on what you hope other people will provide.”

He turned toward her.

“Sarah is going to think I lied to her.”

“Did you?”

Daniel did not answer.

Eleanor felt a familiar ache in her chest. She remembered his childhood, the small promises he had made and kept, the way he had once come to her with every mistake because he believed she could help him understand it. Somewhere along the way, he had learned to hide the truth until the consequences became too large to manage alone.

“You need to tell her before she discovers it another way,” Eleanor said. “And you need to tell her without blaming me for refusing to transfer the house.”

Daniel sat down again.

“What if she leaves?”

“That is a fear you need to face honestly. Giving her a property you don't own won't solve the problem between you.”

He pressed his palms against his eyes.

Eleanor let him sit quietly. She did not fill the silence with reassurance or offer to call Sarah herself. This was Daniel's responsibility, and she would not take it away from him simply because watching him struggle was painful.

Eventually, he asked whether Eleanor could help him prepare a budget.

“Yes,” she said. “We can list your income, essential expenses, minimum debt payments, and any spending you can reduce. Then we'll look at professional advice. But you will have to be honest about every account.”

He nodded slowly.

They spent the next hour reviewing his finances. Eleanor asked questions and wrote down the answers, careful not to turn the conversation into a lecture. The numbers were worse than Daniel had initially admitted, but they were at least visible now. He had several cards, one personal loan, and a small outstanding balance on a financing agreement for furniture.

When they finished, Daniel looked exhausted.

“I don't know how I let it get this bad.”

“Because each decision seemed manageable on its own,” Eleanor said. “That doesn't make it impossible to fix. It means we need to stop making decisions without looking at the whole picture.”

He nodded again.

Before she left, Eleanor reminded him that he needed to speak with Sarah. She offered to help him find a reputable debt adviser, but she would not attend the conversation with his wife unless they both wanted her there.

Daniel walked her to the door.

“Mom, are you angry with me?”

Eleanor considered the question.

“I am hurt that you asked me to transfer the house without telling me why you needed it. I'm also worried about the debt. But I am not giving up on you.”

He looked down, swallowing hard.

“I don't deserve how much you've done for me.”

“That's not the point. Love isn't a prize you earn by being perfect. But trust depends on honesty, and you have work to do if you want me to trust your decisions.”

He nodded, and this time he did not argue.

Eleanor drove home feeling both relieved and unsettled. The dispute over the house now made more sense, but the explanation did not excuse it. Daniel had not been trying only to secure a home for his future family. He had also been searching for a way out of a financial problem he had concealed.

At home, she made lunch and reviewed the notes from their conversation. She wrote down the name of a nonprofit debt-advice service recommended by Marianne and sent Daniel the contact details.

She also sent Marianne an update, explaining that Daniel had disclosed substantial debts and that the proposed transfer might have been intended to support borrowing. She asked for guidance on protecting the property while allowing the couple to remain there under a clear agreement.

Marianne replied that Eleanor should not authorize any borrowing secured against the house, sign a transfer document, or make financial commitments before receiving independent advice. She also recommended that any future assistance be clearly defined and affordable.

Eleanor printed the message and added it to the blue folder.

That afternoon, Sarah called.

Her voice sounded unusually formal.

“Daniel told me you came over this morning.”

“Yes.”

“He said you discussed his finances.”

Eleanor paused. “He told me about some debts he has been managing.”

“Some debts?” Sarah repeated.

The question was so quiet that Eleanor almost missed the anger beneath it.

“I think Daniel needs to explain the details to you himself,” Eleanor said. “I don't want to speak for him.”

“He told me you knew about the money problems.”

“I learned the extent of them today.”

Sarah was silent for several seconds.

“Did he tell you why we wanted the house transferred?”

“Yes.”

“And what did he say?”

“That he thought it might allow him to consolidate the debt.”

Sarah released a short, disbelieving breath.

“He told me your solicitor was making everything difficult. He said the transfer was just about planning for the future.”

Eleanor felt a cold weight settle in her stomach.

“Sarah, I think you need to speak with Daniel directly. There are things he has to explain to you.”

“I intend to.”

The call ended abruptly.

Eleanor remained holding the phone, staring at the dark screen. She had hoped Daniel would tell his wife the truth before it emerged through someone else. Now she could hear the first fracture in a marriage that had appeared stable from the outside.

She wanted to call him immediately, but she resisted. If she intervened every time he faced a consequence, she would only repeat the pattern that had brought them here.

Instead, she returned to her notebook and added a new question to the list for Marianne.

How do I protect my relationship with my son without becoming responsible for his financial decisions?

The answer would not come from a single conversation. It would require patience, consistent boundaries, and a willingness to let Daniel experience the consequences of his choices.

That evening, he sent a message.

I told Sarah everything. She's furious. I don't know what happens now.

Eleanor read it, then typed a response.

Tell her the truth, answer her questions, and get professional advice. I love you, but I cannot make this right for you.

She sent the message and placed the phone on the table.

A few minutes later, Daniel replied.

She says she wants to see the statements. I should have told her sooner.

Eleanor did not respond immediately. She felt compassion for him, but also a cautious hope that he had finally begun to understand the difference between being helped and being rescued.

She went to bed earlier than usual, leaving the blue folder on her desk. The house she had bought for Daniel and Sarah remained legally hers. The debt remained Daniel's responsibility. The marriage remained theirs to repair.

Those distinctions were painful, but they were necessary.

At 11:26, Eleanor's phone rang. Daniel was calling.

She answered, expecting another question about the debt adviser or the repayment plan.

Instead, he said, “Mom, Sarah wants to talk to you tomorrow. She says there's something about the house you need to know.”

Eleanor sat upright in bed.

“What does she want to tell me?”

“I don't know. She wouldn't explain it.”

“Did you ask?”

“Yes. She said it would be better if she told you herself.”

Eleanor looked toward the window, where the streetlamp cast a pale rectangle across the curtains.

“Is it about your debt?”

“I don't think so.”

His voice had changed. He sounded worried in a way that went beyond embarrassment or fear of an argument.

Eleanor asked whether Sarah had said anything else.

After a pause, Daniel answered.

“She said her father has been making plans that she never agreed to.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Sarah Arrives With a Folder of Her Own and Reveals the Arrangement Her Father Expected Everyone to Accept

Eleanor reached Daniel's house shortly after nine.
