Several people appeared in the results, including a property consultant, a local accountant, and a retired solicitor. None seemed obviously connected to Richard or Claire. I resisted the urge to contact every person with the same name and instead sent the unknown sender a short reply asking for identifying information.

The answer arrived less than ten minutes later.

I worked with Richard on the original financing proposal. I can show you the correspondence, but I won't send confidential documents to an anonymous address. Meet me at the public library tomorrow at ten if you want to hear what happened.

I forwarded the message to Martin and asked whether he thought the meeting was appropriate. He advised me not to attend alone and not to accept any documents without recording where they came from. He also reminded me that Daniel's claims would need independent verification.

Naomi agreed to accompany me.

“You don't know whether this person is a witness, a disgruntled business partner, or someone trying to get money out of you,” she said. “We can listen without promising anything.”

I spent the rest of the day organizing the information I had already collected. I placed the mortgage records in one folder, the correspondence about the proposed agreement in another, and the material concerning Claire and Sophie in a third. The separation helped me see which questions had evidence behind them and which remained unanswered.

The next morning, Naomi drove us to the library. We arrived fifteen minutes early and chose a table near the main entrance. People moved quietly between the shelves, and the faint smell of paper and floor polish reminded me of school libraries I had visited as a child.

At ten precisely, a man in his late forties approached the table. He wore a gray jacket, carried a slim briefcase, and glanced at Naomi before looking at me.

“Mrs. Hayes?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Daniel Price.”

He showed me his identification before sitting down. His business card identified him as a property finance consultant, though I did not assume that established the truth of his claims.

“I appreciate you agreeing to meet,” he said.

“You contacted me. What do you know about the agreement involving my house?”

Daniel opened his briefcase but did not remove the documents immediately.

“Before I explain, I need to ask whether Richard has told you about the original proposal.”

“He admitted that he used our property in a financial arrangement. He said the proposal was temporary and had never been finalized.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That is partly accurate.”

“What part isn't?”

“The proposal was not completed in the form he initially intended. But the underlying debt did not disappear when the application failed.”

He removed a thin folder and placed it on the table.

I did not touch it.

“Explain the debt first,” I said.

Daniel folded his hands.

“Several years ago, Richard introduced me to Claire Morgan. She needed financing connected to an apartment she owned. The property was expected to sell quickly, and she believed the proceeds would cover the loan. Richard offered to coordinate the transaction because he knew the people involved.”

“Was Richard lending her money?”

“Not initially. He was arranging the financing and expecting a fee if the transaction succeeded.”

“What went wrong?”

“The sale was delayed. There were disagreements over expenses and the amount owed. Claire couldn't repay the original loan on the expected date, and Richard promised he would help resolve the shortfall.”

I glanced at Naomi. She remained silent, listening.

Daniel continued. “Richard eventually offered additional security to reassure the lender. He told me he had authority to use the property where he lived, subject to the required consent.”

“He didn't have my consent.”

“That became a problem.”

“Did you know I was a co-owner?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you proceed?”

Daniel lowered his eyes briefly.

“I relied on Richard's representation that the necessary documents would be completed. When the application came through, the authorization was incomplete. I asked him to provide the missing consent. He said he would.”

“And he didn't.”

“No. At least, not in the form we needed.”

I felt a mixture of relief and anger. The empty signature line in Eleanor's copy was no longer an isolated detail. It appeared to be the reason the transaction had stalled.

“What happened to the original agreement?” I asked.

Daniel removed a document from the folder. It was a letter from the lending company confirming that the proposed arrangement could not proceed without additional authorization and verification.

“This is the notice that the application was placed on hold,” he said. “It doesn't mean every financial obligation was canceled. Richard remained involved because he had made separate promises concerning repayment.”

I read the letter carefully. It contained a reference number matching the one on the correspondence Eleanor had given me.

“Does the lender have any claim against our house now?”

“I can't answer that conclusively. The company would need to confirm the current status of its records. I can tell you that the proposal I handled was not completed in its original form.”

“Then why was Richard talking about an original document he believed I hadn't seen?”

Daniel's expression shifted.

“Because there was another version.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What was different about it?”

“The first version treated the property as proposed security pending approval. The later version attempted to describe Richard's authority more broadly. I questioned whether the wording was appropriate because it could be interpreted as suggesting that he had already obtained consent from the owners.”

“Did I sign it?”

“Not while I was involved.”

“Who prepared it?”

“Richard brought it to me. I don't know who drafted it.”

I leaned back, trying to absorb the distinction. There had been an initial proposal that stalled, followed by another version that might have represented my consent inaccurately. Daniel could not establish what happened after he stopped working on the transaction, but his account suggested that Richard had continued trying to solve the debt without confronting the underlying problem.

“Why are you contacting me now?” I asked.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Because Richard has recently contacted me again. He wanted to know whether I would support a revised transaction. He said the family had agreed to cooperate.”

“The family?”

“He referred to you and his mother.”

Neither Naomi nor I spoke.

“I told him I wouldn't proceed without direct confirmation from every person whose rights were involved,” Daniel continued. “He became angry and accused me of jeopardizing a solution that had already been approved.”

I thought of the message about losing everything.

“Did you send that threat?”

“No.”

“Do you know who did?”

“I don't.”

“Then how did you obtain my email address?”

Daniel hesitated before answering.

“Richard included it in a draft correspondence. I recognized your name because it appeared on the original property records.”

His explanation was plausible, but I still had no way to establish who had sent the threatening photograph. I made a note of his answer and asked whether he had a copy of the later version of the agreement.

He opened the folder and showed me several pages. The document contained language describing Richard as having authority to arrange financing secured against the property. It did not include my signature, but a paragraph referred to an authorization said to have been obtained separately.

I felt my face grow warm.

“Was there a separate authorization?”

“Not in the records I received.”

“Did you challenge that paragraph?”

“Yes. I asked Richard to provide the document or remove the wording.”

“And what did he say?”

“He told me it was being handled.”

I photographed the pages with Daniel's permission and sent them to Martin. He replied that the wording needed careful review and that I should not draw a final legal conclusion until he had examined the complete file.

Daniel closed the folder.

“I know how this looks,” he said. “I should have demanded more documentation before becoming involved. I believed Richard had a legitimate plan to repay the loan, and I didn't want to leave Claire without a solution.”

“Did you know about Sophie?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Richard might be her father?”

Daniel looked at me for several seconds.

“I knew there was uncertainty about paternity. Richard told me the relationship had ended before your marriage, but he also told me he intended to continue supporting the child.”

“Did he ever say he had taken a test?”

“Not to me.”

I asked whether Daniel knew why Richard had refused to take one now.

“I can only tell you what he said when we worked together,” Daniel replied. “He believed that establishing paternity would create obligations he wasn't prepared to accept. He also feared it would affect his marriage.”

The statement hurt, but I did not mistake it for proof. Daniel could describe Richard's words, not establish the child's parentage.

“What happened to the debt after the application was rejected?” I asked.

“Richard agreed to cover part of the shortfall himself. The remaining amount was supposed to be resolved through Claire's property sale. I don't know whether that has happened.”

“Does he still owe money?”

“I believe so, but I can't confirm the current balance.”

I wrote down the names of the lender and the company that had handled the proposal. Daniel gave me copies of the correspondence he was authorized to share and agreed to confirm his account to Martin if needed.

Before we parted, he looked directly at me.

“There is one thing you should understand. Richard wasn't simply trying to help Claire. He had made promises to several people, and when those promises became difficult to keep, he began treating your property as the solution.”

I held his gaze.

“Did he ever tell you that I had agreed to it?”

“He said you would understand once the transaction was complete.”

I felt the last of my uncertainty settle into something harder.

Richard had not merely forgotten to discuss the proposal with me. He had proceeded as though my consent were a formality he could obtain later, after he had made promises to other people.

Naomi drove us home in silence. When we reached the house, I went directly to the kitchen and placed Daniel's documents beside Eleanor's copies. The matching reference numbers confirmed that they related to the same proposed transaction, but the newer pages raised questions that the older copies could not answer.

I called Martin and arranged to meet him that afternoon.

Before I left, Richard sent a message.

We need to settle this today. I've found a way to resolve the property issue, but I need you to sign one document.

I stared at the screen.

For several days, I had been asking him to explain the paperwork he had already submitted. Now, without providing the full records or addressing my concerns, he was asking me to sign something new.

I typed a reply, deleted it, and started again.

Send me the complete document and the name of the company requesting it. I will have my solicitor review it before I consider signing.

His response came almost immediately.

If you refuse, everyone involved will suffer.

I showed the message to Naomi.

Then I forwarded it to Martin.

Whatever Richard intended to put in front of me, I would not sign it until I understood exactly what it meant.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Document Richard Wanted Me to Sign Revealed a Secret He Could No Longer Keep Hidden

I searched Daniel Price's name the following morning.
