The document appeared to show that Richard had paid several installments toward Sophie's school fees, but I knew a photograph could be incomplete or misleading. I needed to establish whether the records were authentic and whether the payments had any legitimate explanation.

The sender had provided no name or contact details. I replied once, asking who they were and how they had obtained the document. No response came.

Naomi suggested that I preserve the original email, including its header information, rather than continue exchanging messages with an unknown person. I followed her advice and saved a copy to the folder I had created for the property records.

By then, the morning light had shifted across the kitchen floor. I realized I had spent nearly two days trying to understand decisions Richard had made over several years. The imbalance was difficult to accept. He had enjoyed the comfort of knowing the full story while I was left piecing together fragments from letters, photographs, and unexplained payments.

I called the school using the public number listed on its website. I did not pretend to be Claire or request private information about Sophie. I explained that I had received a document bearing my husband's name and wanted to know the appropriate way to verify whether it was genuine.

The administrator explained that the school could not discuss a student's account with an unrelated caller. However, if a document appeared to have been issued by the school, I could send a copy to its finance office for verification of its format and authenticity without asking for personal details about the child.

I thanked her and sent the document.

While I waited, I reviewed the family calendar from the previous few years. Richard had traveled regularly for work, and many of his trips had coincided with payments recorded in Eleanor's notes. Some weekends he had claimed to be attending conferences or inspecting properties in other cities. I had never questioned the dates because his work often required travel.

Now I could see a pattern, though I could not yet say what it meant.

I made a spreadsheet listing each trip, the corresponding payment date, and any explanation Richard had given me at the time. The exercise revealed several gaps. On three occasions, he had told me he was traveling for work, but there were no related meetings in the calendar invitations he had shared with me. That absence was not proof of anything, yet it reinforced my decision to verify his claims rather than accept them automatically.

At noon, Martin called to say that the property services company had acknowledged my request for records. The company needed to review the file before releasing it, and he would follow up through formal channels.

“Until then,” he said, “don't assume the transaction went through. A proposal can look alarming without having been completed.”

“I understand.”

“Also, don't attempt to resolve the family questions and the property questions in one conversation. They may overlap, but they require different kinds of evidence.”

His advice made sense. I had been trying to solve everything at once because the secrets seemed connected. Separating them would allow me to focus on facts instead of being pulled from one emotional crisis to another.

That afternoon, the school finance office replied. The statement's layout resembled its standard invoices, but the staff member could not confirm that the particular account belonged to the school. The document lacked a complete reference number, and the payment details had been cropped from the photograph.

I read the email twice.

Someone had sent me a document designed to look convincing, but it could not be verified. The sender might have been trying to help me, or they might have been trying to provoke a reaction. Until I knew who had sent it, I would not treat it as proof.

I showed Naomi the response.

“Whoever sent this knows enough about your situation to make it look plausible,” she said. “That doesn't mean you should follow their instructions blindly.”

“I wasn't going to.”

“Good. You have enough problems without letting a stranger direct your decisions.”

At six, Richard returned home carrying a leather folder. He looked at the dining table, where I had arranged copies of the property correspondence, and stopped in the doorway.

“What is all this?”

“Records concerning our house.”

He placed his folder on the counter.

“Have you been contacting my business partners?”

“No.”

“Then how did you obtain these documents?”

“Some came from a letter delivered to our house. Others came from your mother.”

His expression darkened at the mention of Eleanor.

“She had no right to give you those papers.”

“They concern a transaction involving our property.”

“They are confidential.”

“So is my financial information. Yet someone apparently thought it was acceptable to use my name in an agreement I never approved.”

Richard walked to the table and examined the documents. His face changed when he reached the copy of the proposed authorization. He picked it up, checked the page number, and placed it down again.

“Where did you get this version?”

“Eleanor.”

“She shouldn't have kept it.”

“Why?”

“Because it was an early draft. It was never finalized.”

“Then why were you trying to arrange financing against our house?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was trying to help Claire resolve a difficult situation. She was facing legal expenses and couldn't access the money tied up in her property. I believed I could arrange a temporary solution.”

“Using our home?”

“I didn't think it would come to that.”

“That isn't an answer.”

He turned toward me, his frustration rising.

“I was trying to protect someone who needed help. Is that so difficult to understand?”

“No. What I find difficult to understand is why you believed protecting Claire required hiding things from your wife.”

He looked away.

I took a breath and asked the question that had been waiting in my mind since I received the tuition statement.

“Have you been paying for Sophie's school?”

Richard froze.

For several seconds, he did not move. Then he placed both hands on the back of a chair and stared at the floor.

“Where did you hear that?”

“Is it true?”

He pulled out the chair and sat down.

“I have helped with expenses.”

“What expenses?”

“School fees. Medical bills sometimes. Things Claire couldn't manage.”

“Why?”

“Because I could afford to help.”

I studied him.

“You told me Claire was a former girlfriend who needed temporary assistance. You said Sophie had nothing to do with you. Now you're telling me you've been paying her school fees for years.”

“I never said I hadn't helped the child.”

“You denied that she was your daughter.”

“Because she isn't.”

His certainty sounded rehearsed.

“Then why are you paying for her education?”

“Because the child shouldn't suffer because her mother and I had a complicated history.”

The answer was plausible in isolation. People could support children who were not biologically related to them. But Richard had not simply helped a former partner in need. He had concealed the relationship, given inconsistent explanations, and attempted to involve our property in a financial arrangement he refused to explain.

“Why didn't you tell me?” I asked.

“Because I knew you would react exactly like this.”

“How would I have reacted if you'd told me the truth at the beginning?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

I continued. “Would I have objected to you helping a child? Would I have insisted on knowing how much money you were giving away? Would I have asked why you were meeting her mother? You never gave me the opportunity to decide what I could accept.”

Richard stood and began pacing.

“I didn't want to hurt you.”

“You hurt me by making the decision for me.”

He stopped beside the window.

“I was afraid you'd misunderstand.”

“You could have explained.”

“You don't know what it was like.”

“Then tell me.”

For the first time, his anger seemed to falter. He returned to the table and sat down, staring at the papers rather than at me.

“Claire and I were young,” he said. “We were together for a while, but the relationship was unstable. When she told me she was pregnant, we were already separating. She said she didn't expect anything from me.”

“Did you believe the child was yours?”

“I didn't know.”

“Did you ever find out?”

“No.”

“Then why have you spent years insisting she isn't your daughter?”

He pressed his lips together.

“Because I didn't want to spend the rest of my life being treated as though I had abandoned a child.”

I let the words settle.

“You may have helped her financially,” I said. “You may have been trying to do the right thing. But neither possibility explains why you lied to me about the nature of your relationship.”

He looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

“I thought I could handle it privately.”

“You thought you could control it privately.”

He did not disagree.

I asked whether he would contact Claire and arrange a conversation in which the facts could be established. He said he would think about it, then immediately began discussing the property agreement again.

I stopped him.

“Those are separate issues. We need to resolve both, but one doesn't excuse the other.”

He picked up his folder and left the room.

Later that evening, Eleanor called to ask whether Richard had confronted me. I told her he had admitted paying some of Sophie's expenses but continued to deny paternity.

“Did he explain why he kept the payments secret?” she asked.

“He said he didn't want to hurt me.”

Eleanor gave a weary sigh.

“He has used that explanation for years.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means he often convinces himself that a lie is acceptable if he believes the truth will cause pain.”

I thought about the empty signature line, the hidden correspondence, and the documents that had appeared without explanation.

“Did he ever tell you he had taken a paternity test?”

“No.”

“Did Claire ever tell you the child's father was someone else?”

“No.”

I thanked her and ended the call.

Before going to bed, I checked my email. The unknown sender had replied at last.

The message contained only a name: Daniel Price.

I didn't recognize it.

A second line followed.

Ask Richard what happened to the original agreement after the lender rejected it.

I forwarded the message to Martin, then sat staring at the screen. Whoever Daniel Price was, he knew about the proposed transaction and believed there was another document I hadn't seen.

I had spent the day learning that Richard's secret financial dealings and his hidden connection to Claire were not separate accidents. Both depended on his belief that he could decide what I was allowed to know.

Now someone else was offering information, but I had no way to determine whether they were trying to help me or draw me into a conflict I still didn't understand.

I saved the message and turned off the laptop.

The next step would have to be taken carefully.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: A Stranger Claimed to Know Why the Agreement Failed, and His First Question Was About My Marriage

I forwarded the tuition statement to Martin before opening it again.
