I kept the folder pressed against my chest. The conversation had reached a point where every answer seemed to reveal another omission, and I no longer trusted myself to distinguish an honest explanation from a carefully prepared excuse.

“Who were you talking to?” I asked again.

“A colleague.”

“What original document were you discussing?”

He slipped his phone into his pocket. “It's a commercial agreement. It has nothing to do with you.”

“You just admitted that you used our house in a financial arrangement. That makes it my business.”

His mouth tightened. “You don't understand the details.”

“Then explain them.”

Richard looked toward the staircase, then back at me. “I'm not going to spend the entire evening defending myself against accusations based on something my mother told you. This has become ridiculous.”

He picked up his keys and walked toward the front door.

“Are you leaving again?”

“I need to clear my head.”

“You seem to do that whenever I ask you something important.”

He stopped with his hand on the door handle. For a moment, I thought he might turn around and finally tell me what was happening. Instead, he opened the door and left without another word.

I heard his car start, then fade down the street. Only after the sound disappeared did I realize I had been holding my breath.

I placed the folder on the table and sat down. The photograph of Claire and Sophie lay on top of the mortgage statements, its edges slightly curled from being handled. Richard's refusal to take a paternity test kept returning to my mind. A refusal wasn't proof, but his reaction had been far more intense than the question seemed to warrant.

I opened my laptop and checked the time stamp on the photograph once more. The date placed Richard at the hotel several years earlier, during the trip he had claimed was canceled. I searched my old emails for messages from that week and found one in which he told me he would be home late because a meeting had run over.

Another message, sent the following morning, said he was exhausted and would probably sleep through the weekend.

At the time, I had replied with a joke about bringing home coffee strong enough to revive him. Reading it now made my chest ache. There was nothing foolish about the woman who had sent that message. She had trusted her husband because trust was the foundation on which she believed their marriage rested.

The discovery of a lie did not make that trust a mistake. It made the lie a choice Richard had made without giving me the chance to decide what I was willing to accept.

I called Martin and told him about the original document Richard had mentioned. He asked whether I had access to any paperwork beyond the mortgage statements.

“Not directly,” I said. “He keeps his business files in a locked drawer.”

“Don't try to force access to anything that isn't yours,” Martin replied. “We can request relevant records through the proper channels. In the meantime, preserve what you have and keep a written record of your conversations.”

I told him about Richard's admission that our property had been used in an agreement.

“Did he identify the lender or the amount involved?”

“No.”

“Did he acknowledge signing anything?”

“He said he believed the arrangement was covered by documents we had signed for the mortgage.”

Martin paused. “That distinction matters. Your next step is to obtain the complete property records and have them reviewed independently. Don't assume his description of the agreement is accurate.”

After we ended the call, I wrote down the exact words Richard had used as best I could remember them. I recorded the time of our conversation, the questions I had asked, and his responses. It felt clinical, almost cold, but the exercise helped me separate what I knew from what I feared.

At nine thirty, Naomi arrived carrying a container of soup and a paper bag of bread. I hadn't asked her to come, but I was relieved when I opened the door and saw her standing there.

“You sounded terrible on the phone,” she said.

“I probably look worse.”

She set the food on the kitchen counter, then studied my face. “Have you eaten anything?”

“Not really.”

“Then we're fixing that first.”

We sat at the table while the soup warmed. I showed her the photograph of Claire and Sophie, the threatening message, and the notes I had made about the property agreement. Naomi examined everything without rushing me.

When she reached the photograph, she looked at the little girl for a long time.

“Have you considered that Richard might be lying about more than the child?” she asked.

“Every minute since he walked out.”

“Then don't let him make you feel guilty for asking questions. You aren't investigating him because you want to catch him doing something wrong. You're trying to establish whether your home and your finances are safe.”

I nodded, though the distinction was harder to maintain emotionally than it sounded.

Naomi glanced toward the stairs. “Where does he keep his household paperwork?”

“In the study. Some of it is in the locked drawer, but our original purchase documents are in the filing cabinet.”

“Have you checked those?”

“Not yet.”

After dinner, we went through the filing cabinet together. We found the original purchase agreement, the mortgage offer, and the records documenting the money I had contributed toward the deposit. Naomi helped me scan each document and save a copy to a secure folder.

The paperwork confirmed that I was a named owner of the property. It also showed that the deposit had been paid from two accounts, including the account into which my grandmother's inheritance had been deposited.

Nothing in the original documents suggested that I had agreed to secure another person's debt.

Then Naomi noticed a thin envelope tucked behind the mortgage correspondence. It was addressed to both of us and bore the logo of a property services company I didn't recognize.

The envelope had been opened and resealed with a strip of clear tape.

Inside was a letter dated four months earlier. It referred to a proposed change in the property's financial arrangements and requested confirmation of the owners' consent. The letter stated that no change would be processed until the necessary documentation had been received.

I read the final paragraph twice.

“They sent this to our house,” I said. “Why didn't Richard tell me?”

Naomi examined the letter. “Maybe he thought he could handle it before you found out.”

The date was important. Four months earlier, Richard had asked me to sign what he described as routine mortgage paperwork. I remembered him bringing a folder to the breakfast table while I was preparing for a video meeting. He had pointed to two signature boxes and told me the bank needed the forms returned that day.

I had signed them without reading every page.

The memory made me feel sick, but I forced myself to continue examining the envelope. The letter contained a reference number and the name of a contact at the property services company.

I photographed the letter and sent it to Martin.

He responded that we should request the underlying agreement and any associated correspondence. He also warned me that the letter alone did not establish whether the arrangement had been completed or whether my signature had been used improperly.

Naomi stayed with me while I called the company. The representative confirmed that the reference number belonged to a proposed transaction involving our address. She could not provide details over the telephone, but she explained how to submit a request as a property owner.

I completed the form and attached proof of my identity.

When I finished, Naomi gathered the scattered papers into a neat pile.

“You've done what you can tonight,” she said. “You need some rest.”

I looked at the letter again. The company had contacted us because something had been proposed, and Richard had apparently decided I didn't need to know.

Before Naomi left, she asked whether I wanted her to stay overnight.

I almost said no out of habit. Instead, I told her the truth.

“Yes. I'd rather not be alone tonight.”

She took the spare bedroom, and I locked the front door before going upstairs. Richard still hadn't returned.

At eleven forty, my phone vibrated.

The message came from Eleanor.

I found a copy of the agreement. Richard doesn't know I kept it. We need to meet tomorrow, but not at the house.

A second message arrived a few seconds later.

There's something about Claire that I should have told you years ago.

I stared at the screen, feeling the fragile calm of the evening begin to unravel.

The next morning, I would meet Eleanor again. And this time, I intended to leave with the documents she had spent years keeping hidden.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Eleanor Finally Named the Person Richard Had Been Protecting, but Her Confession Raised a More Dangerous Question

Richard stood beside the kitchen window with his phone in his hand, watching me as though he expected me to ask another question.
