He appeared to be in his early sixties, neatly dressed in a charcoal coat, with silver hair combed back from a narrow forehead. Unlike the men who had threatened Daniel by telephone, Martin made no effort to conceal his presence. He had come to be seen.

Robert moved away from the window. “Nobody opens that door.”

Martin knocked twice.

“Laura,” he called, his voice carrying easily through the house. “I know you're in there. I also know you've kept documents that belong to the county. Let's settle this without making the situation worse.”

Laura's face had become pale. She reached for the wooden box containing the metal tag and transfer log, then stopped when Daniel touched her arm.

“Does he know what your brother found?” Daniel whispered.

“He knows Daniel Mendez stopped cooperating with the county. He may not know what Anna kept.”

Martin knocked again. “Helen Price is already involved. If you make me bring the authorities into this, I won't be able to protect anyone from the consequences.”

Helen stood beside the desk, watching the front door. “That's an interesting promise from a man who has spent thirty years making sure the authorities never saw these records.”

Martin smiled faintly through the glass, as if he had heard her.

“Ms. Price, I was wondering when you'd join us.”

Daniel looked at the final transfer order in Martin's hand. Even from across the room, he could see the county seal and a line of signatures. Martin had not come to argue about history. He had come to take possession of the documents before the scheduled transfer date.

“What's the order actually authorize?” Daniel asked Helen.

“Without seeing every page, I can't say. But if it is the order I suspect, it gives the trustee authority to close the six active accounts and transfer their remaining assets to a successor trust. It may also require the original register to be surrendered.”

“And if we refuse?”

“They could seek a warrant for the records. Whether a judge would grant it depends on what Martin has told the court.”

Robert examined the window. “He won't come alone. There may be officers outside the property.”

Laura shook her head. “I haven't seen any.”

“That doesn't mean they're not there.”

Daniel looked at the others. They had evidence connecting Thomas Wren, Peter Haldane, Judge Bell, and Martin to a scheme that had altered at least thirty-one identities. They also had original hospital records, a transfer log, and a photograph suggesting that Samuel's accident had been misrepresented. Yet Martin was standing on the porch with an official order, and Daniel could not tell whether the document was legitimate or another instrument of control.

He decided they needed to see it.

“I'm going to speak to him,” Daniel said.

Robert stepped in front of him. “He wants you separated from the evidence.”

“Then we don't separate.”

Daniel took the original register and placed it inside the leather case. Helen kept the copied documents, while Margaret held the wooden box containing the tag and transfer log. Evelyn stayed beside the table, guarding Rebecca's records. Robert accompanied Daniel to the door.

Before opening it, Daniel addressed Martin through the wood.

“You can show us the order, but you don't come inside unless everyone agrees.”

Martin's answer was immediate. “That's reasonable.”

Daniel opened the door.

Martin did not cross the threshold. He held out the order, keeping one hand on the leather case. Daniel took the papers and stepped back far enough to read them under the hallway light.

The first page cited the original 1991 court order. The second authorized the trustee of the Daniel Vale account to transfer the remaining assets to Wren Civic Services on November 6, 2026, provided the beneficiary's legal status remained unresolved. The third required the original register to be delivered to a designated county records officer before the transfer could be completed.

The final page contained a signature Daniel recognized.

Arthur Bell.

Judge Bell had died years earlier, according to the records Daniel had found. The signature could be genuine, but the order's latest authorization was dated only three days ago.

“Who signed the current authorization?” Daniel asked.

Martin pointed to the bottom of the third page.

His own signature appeared beneath the words, Authorized Trustee.

“You're not a county records officer,” Daniel said.

“No. I'm the trustee designated by the court.”

“Then why does the order require delivery to a county officer?”

“Because the original register must be verified before the accounts can be closed.”

Daniel turned to the second page. A paragraph near the bottom stated that any challenge to the beneficiary's identity would suspend the transfer until the court determined whether the claimant had standing to object.

He looked up. “You want me to challenge my own identity.”

Martin's expression barely changed. “You have already done that by searching for the death certificate. The question is whether you intend to pursue the matter legally.”

“And if I do?”

“The trust will be frozen. The court will examine your claim. That could take years.”

“While the money disappears?”

Martin lowered his gaze to the order. “The funds will be held according to the terms of the trust.”

“By you.”

“By the trustee.”

Daniel handed the papers back. “Those aren't the same thing.”

For the first time, Martin's composure faltered. It lasted only a moment, but Daniel saw it.

“You've been given incomplete information,” Martin said. “The trust was established to protect vulnerable children whose families were unable to provide stable homes. The records were sealed because some of those families were connected to criminal investigations. The money was meant to support the children until they were old enough to manage their affairs.”

“Then why declare them dead?”

“Because the law at the time did not provide a reliable way to protect their identities.”

“That's your explanation for falsifying death certificates?”

“It's an explanation for an arrangement made under extraordinary circumstances.”

Margaret appeared behind Daniel. “You told me my grandson had died. You knew he was alive.”

Martin looked at her with something resembling pity. “Mrs. Vale, I understand your anger. But you were not in a position to understand the pressures involved.”

“I understood that I had given birth to a child. I understood that you told me he was dead. I understood that no one would let me see him.”

Martin's jaw tightened. “The situation was more complicated than that.”

“Then explain it.”

He did not.

Daniel took a step toward him. “You have until tomorrow morning to provide us with the full trust documents, including the original transfer instructions. If you refuse, we give everything to Helen Price and the state attorney general.”

Martin glanced toward the room where the others stood. “You don't have the complete record. You have fragments, copies, and documents taken from a restricted archive. Without the original authorization, you cannot prove who ordered the changes.”

“We have the original register.”

“And you have no lawful authority to possess it.”

“Then file a complaint.”

Martin looked at Daniel for several seconds. The calmness returned to his face, but his eyes had hardened.

“You think this is about money,” he said. “It isn't. The trust is only one part of the arrangement. If you force the records open, you will expose people who have spent their entire lives under identities that were never meant to be public.”

“Then they deserve to know what happened to them.”

“Some may not want to know.”

“That isn't your decision.”

Martin placed the final transfer order inside his case. “Your mother understood that distinction better than you do.”

Daniel felt the words land like a deliberate blow.

“What do you know about Elaine?”

“More than you think.”

“Then tell me.”

Martin glanced toward Robert. “Ask your father what happened during the first six months after the adoption. Ask him why Elaine agreed to keep the original record hidden, and why she never pursued a legal correction even after the people who threatened her were gone.”

Robert moved into the doorway. “You're lying.”

“Am I?”

Martin opened the leather case and removed a small envelope. He held it up so Daniel could see Elaine's handwriting on the front.

The words read: FOR ROBERT — ONLY IF DANIEL FINDS THE REGISTER.

Robert went rigid.

“Where did you get that?” he demanded.

Martin did not answer. He placed the envelope on the porch railing.

“Read it before you decide that your wife was simply a victim of the arrangement,” he said. “Then consider whether you really want the entire truth made public.”

He turned and walked toward the gray sedan parked beside the road. Before entering, he looked back at Daniel.

“The transfer takes effect in less than a month. If you want to challenge it, do so through the courts. If you choose to break into private archives and steal documents, you will give me every reason to close the matter permanently.”

The sedan pulled away.

Daniel retrieved the envelope. Robert stood beside him, staring at Elaine's handwriting as though it belonged to someone he no longer understood.

“Open it,” Daniel said.

Robert shook his head. “Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because whatever she wrote, I need to read it before I can explain it.”

Daniel took the envelope back and examined the seal. It had not been opened. Elaine had written the instruction years earlier, before her death, and Martin had somehow obtained it.

They returned to the kitchen. Helen immediately began photographing the transfer order's details from memory, while Margaret recorded the time Martin had arrived and the words he had spoken. Evelyn secured Rebecca's documents in a separate folder.

Daniel placed Elaine's envelope on the table.

“We're done letting other people decide which parts of the truth we can handle,” he said. “We're opening this now.”

Robert looked at the envelope, then at his son.

At last, he nodded.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Elaine’s Hidden Instructions Revealed the One Choice Robert Had Made That Could Undo Everything He Tried to Protect

Martin Wren stood on Laura Mendez's porch with the leather case tucked beneath one arm and the final transfer order held against the glass.
