Daniel looked toward the front entrance, then at the papers scattered across the dining table. His expression had changed from fear to something more deliberate, as if he were calculating how much damage could be contained if he acted quickly enough.

“Don't open that door,” he said.

“Is it Michael?”

“I don't know.”

“You just received a message from him.”

“That doesn't mean the person outside is Michael.”

Claire glanced toward the hallway. “Then I'll find out.”

She walked away before he could stop her. Behind her, she heard the scrape of a chair against the floor, followed by his hurried footsteps. When she reached the entrance, she checked the small security screen beside the door.

A man stood on the porch, perhaps in his early forties, wearing a charcoal coat that looked too thin for the damp weather. His hair was streaked with gray at the temples. He held a leather document case against his side, and his face was turned slightly toward the street.

Claire didn't recognize him.

“Who is it?” she called through the closed door.

“Michael Reed.”

Daniel stopped several feet behind her.

Michael lifted his eyes toward the camera. “Tell Daniel I know he's there. And tell him I've brought the pages he never managed to find.”

Claire looked at her husband.

Daniel shook his head, barely moving it.

She unlocked the door but kept the chain in place.

Michael looked at her through the narrow opening. Up close, he appeared exhausted. There were shadows beneath his eyes, and a faint scar crossed the skin above his left eyebrow. His gaze moved from Claire to Daniel, then back again.

“You must be Claire,” he said.

“Who are you to my husband?”

Michael's mouth tightened. “That depends on which version of the story he gave you.”

Daniel stepped forward. “You shouldn't be here.”

“Neither should I have been carrying your mistakes for eleven years.”

“You said you were finished.”

“I said I was finished protecting you.”

The two men stared at each other. Claire had never heard Daniel speak to anyone with such open hostility. Even during arguments with contractors or difficult clients, he usually remained measured, using politeness as a shield. The anger in his face now seemed older than their marriage.

Claire released the chain and opened the door wider.

“Come inside,” she said. “Both of you are going to explain what's happening.”

Michael hesitated before entering. He wiped his shoes on the mat, placed his document case on the hallway table, and glanced toward the kitchen as though checking whether someone else was present.

Daniel closed the door behind him.

“Did anyone follow you?” he asked.

Michael gave a short, humorless laugh. “You still think every problem can be solved by checking the driveway.”

“Answer me.”

“No one followed me.”

Claire pointed toward the dining room. “Sit down.”

Neither man moved.

“I'm not asking,” she added.

Michael sat first. Daniel remained standing until Claire looked at him, then pulled out a chair opposite his former partner. The original contract lay between them, beside the list bearing Claire's name and the unexplained $42,000 payment.

Michael noticed the list immediately.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was inside the envelope Daniel brought home,” Claire said. “It has my name on it. I want to know why.”

Michael lowered his eyes.

Daniel leaned forward. “You said you brought the missing pages.”

“I did.”

“Then give them to me.”

“No.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Daniel's fingers curled against the edge of the table. “You have no idea what you've started.”

“Actually, I know exactly what I've started. It's taken me eleven years to do it.”

Claire opened the document case before either man could object. Inside were several folders, a small notebook, and a large brown envelope sealed with transparent tape. She removed the envelope and placed it beside the contract.

“Is this what you've been looking for?” she asked Daniel.

He stared at it.

Michael nodded. “The original records from the property transaction. Not every page, but enough to show where the money went and who authorized the transfers.”

“Why didn't you return them years ago?” Claire asked.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Daniel?”

“Of what the documents would reveal.”

Daniel's face hardened. “You were the one who approved the transfers.”

“I approved some of them. Not all of them.”

“You signed the authorization.”

“For the first payment. Not the later ones.”

Claire looked from one man to the other. “You're both speaking as though I should already understand this. I don't. Start at the beginning, and don't leave anything out.”

Michael removed his coat and folded it over the back of his chair.

Eleven years earlier, he explained, he and Daniel had been partners in a consulting company that specialized in commercial property acquisitions. They had found a promising redevelopment project involving an old industrial site near the river. The land had been held through several layers of ownership, and the purchase required financing from private investors.

Arthur Hartwell had agreed to arrange the financing through Hartwell Advisory. His company would provide the initial funds, while Daniel and Michael would manage the acquisition and oversee the redevelopment.

The deal had appeared straightforward. The property was undervalued, the city was considering improvements to the surrounding district, and the partners expected to sell their interest at a profit within two years.

Then the ownership documents became complicated.

“The land wasn't owned by the company we thought it was,” Michael said. “It was connected to an estate. We were told the trustees had agreed to the transaction, but the final authorization never arrived.”

“Who told you they had agreed?” Claire asked.

“Arthur Hartwell.”

“Did you see the authorization?”

“No. Daniel was handling the paperwork.”

Daniel looked sharply at him. “You knew the transfer was pending.”

“I knew we were waiting for confirmation. I didn't know the confirmation was false.”

Claire felt her stomach tighten. “False?”

Michael opened the brown envelope and removed a copy of a document bearing several signatures. He placed it in front of her.

“This was the authorization we received. It allowed the funds to be released before the estate's ownership had been properly verified.”

Claire examined the page. The signature attributed to a trustee was unfamiliar, but the document contained the same circular emblem she'd seen on the Hartwell building. Several account numbers appeared along the bottom.

“Who signed it?” she asked.

“That's what we were supposed to establish,” Michael said. “But the company that issued it later denied having any record of the authorization.”

Daniel shook his head. “Arthur said the paperwork had been reviewed.”

“And you accepted his word.”

“We were partners.”

“So was I.”

The words hung between them.

Michael explained that the initial funds had been transferred to the property company as planned. Additional payments followed, supposedly to cover legal fees, outstanding taxes, and the costs of clearing the site. By the time the ownership dispute became public, more than $400,000 had passed through several accounts.

Some of the money could be accounted for. The rest had disappeared.

Daniel and Michael had blamed each other. The financing company demanded repayment. Their business collapsed, and the partners signed separate agreements accepting responsibility for different portions of the loss.

“Why did Daniel owe $150,000?” Claire asked.

“Because that was the remaining amount under his settlement,” Michael said. “He'd already made payments over several years.”

Daniel stared at him. “You told me the account was closed.”

“It was closed for the purposes of the civil claim. That didn't mean the original records were irrelevant.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

Michael's face tightened.

“Because someone came to my apartment and told me that if I handed over the records, I'd be blamed for every missing dollar. I was warned that the signatures on the documents would be enough to put me in court, regardless of who had authorized the transfers.”

“Who threatened you?” Claire asked.

“I never saw his face clearly. He knew details about my family, where my sister worked, and which school my daughter attended.”

Daniel looked down.

Claire noticed.

“You knew about the threat?”

“I knew Michael had received a warning,” Daniel said. “I didn't know who sent it.”

“You told me he'd gone overseas.”

“I thought he had.”

Michael leaned back in his chair. “You thought what was convenient for you.”

Daniel rose so abruptly that the chair legs scraped against the floor.

“You left me to deal with the creditors, the lawyers, and the threats. You walked away with the records and let everyone believe I'd stolen the money.”

“I left because I thought you had.”

The room fell silent.

Claire looked at Daniel. His face had gone pale, but he did not deny it.

Michael opened the notebook and turned several pages. “There's something else. I found the account that received the missing funds. It was opened through a holding company connected to the estate.”

“Which estate?” Claire asked.

“The Morgan estate.”

Her fingers went cold.

Michael slid a document across the table. The name appeared in the header, followed by the date of the transfer and the amount: $42,000.

“This is the payment you saw in Evelyn's records,” he said. “But the money didn't go directly to your father. It passed through an account associated with the estate before reaching an account registered under his name.”

Claire read the page carefully.

“Why would my father receive money from a property transaction?”

“We don't know,” Michael replied. “The transfer description says administrative disbursement. There was a corresponding authorization, but the page containing the beneficiary's instructions was missing.”

Daniel sat down again.

Claire turned toward him. “You told me you had never investigated my family.”

“I hadn't.”

“But you knew my father's name was in the documents.”

“Only as a name. I didn't know it belonged to your father until I saw your full name on the list today.”

“Why didn't you tell me when you first realized the connection?”

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

“Because I was afraid you'd think I married you for the money.”

The admission struck harder than she expected.

Claire had imagined many possible reasons for his silence: shame, financial desperation, a desire to protect her from a dangerous dispute. She had not imagined that he'd spent years afraid she might question the beginning of their relationship.

“Did you?” she asked.

“No.”

“Did you know I was the beneficiary when we met?”

“No.”

“Then what are you hiding?”

Daniel opened his mouth, but Michael interrupted.

“He's hiding the fact that he signed a second agreement with Arthur Hartwell after the property deal collapsed.”

Daniel turned on him. “That agreement was confidential.”

“So was the first one.”

“What second agreement?” Claire asked.

Michael removed another page from the envelope.

This document was dated four months before Claire's father's death. It bore Daniel's signature and a witness's signature, but the second signatory's name had been obscured by a dark line.

The agreement referred to the preservation of certain estate records and the payment of a beneficiary once the outstanding obligations had been resolved.

Claire searched the text for her father's name.

It appeared in the final paragraph.

She read it aloud, her voice barely audible. “The beneficiary shall be notified upon completion of the settlement, provided the original trustee's declaration can be recovered.”

“What is the trustee's declaration?” she asked.

Michael looked at Daniel.

Daniel's expression had become unreadable.

“It's a document that explains why your father received the money,” he said. “And it identifies who was supposed to receive the estate afterward.”

“Who?”

“We never found out.”

Michael closed the notebook.

“I think we did,” he said. “But the answer isn't in the pages I brought.”

Claire stared at him.

“Where is it?”

Michael reached into the document case and removed a small key attached to a faded blue tag.

“The original trustee's declaration was kept in a safe deposit box. The box was opened after your father's death, but the contents were never transferred into the estate inventory.”

He placed the key on the table.

“The bank's records show that the box is still registered under your father's name.”

Claire looked at the key, then at Daniel.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

Neither man answered.

Outside, the rain began again, tapping lightly against the windows.

Michael pushed the key toward her.

“Because the box wasn't supposed to be found by you,” he said. “It was supposed to be opened by the person who arranged the original transfer.”

Claire looked down at the blue tag.

A number had been written on it in fading ink.

17\\.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Safe Deposit Box Had Been Waiting Since Her Father’s Death, but the Bank Clerk Recognized a Name Claire Had Never Used

The doorbell rang a second time.
