The mailbox bore the name Morris, and a small workshop stood behind the house, its windows covered with dusty curtains.

Thomas parked near the gate.

“Do you want me to go first?” he asked.

“No,” I said. “We came together.”

Daniel joined us, carrying a folder of copied documents. We walked up the path and knocked.

For a long time, nothing happened.

Then a man appeared behind the glass panel beside the door. He was tall and thin, with silver hair and a face that seemed to have been drawn tight by age. He examined us through the glass before opening the door a few inches.

“Can I help you?”

“My name is Mara Ellis,” I said. “We're looking for Edward Morgan.”

The man's eyes narrowed.

“There's no one here by that name.”

I took out the old business filing.

“Your former company is listed in this document. We also have correspondence from Robert Ellis and Samuel Price.”

His gaze dropped to the paper.

For a moment, I thought he would close the door.

Instead, he opened it wider.

“Come inside.”

The house was neat but sparsely furnished. A clock ticked on the mantel, and several framed photographs stood on a shelf beside the window. The man offered us chairs but remained standing.

“My name is Edward Morris now,” he said. “I haven't used Morgan in many years.”

Thomas placed the photograph of Evelyn on the table.

Edward looked at it and immediately turned away.

“Where did you get that?”

“It belonged to my mother,” Thomas replied. “Her name was Evelyn Bell.”

Edward sat down.

For several seconds, he stared at the floor.

“I wondered when someone would come looking.”

“Then you know what happened to her,” I said.

He rubbed his hands together.

“I know what happened before she disappeared. I don't know where she went afterward.”

“Did you help her leave?”

“No.”

“Did you arrange for her to be hidden?”

“No.”

His answers were too quick, too carefully separated. I placed the property transfer agreement on the table, followed by the receipt bearing my mother's name.

Edward examined both documents.

“Who gave you these?”

“We found them among papers connected to Arthur Bell and Samuel Price.”

He looked at Thomas.

“Then you've found the box.”

Thomas nodded.

Edward leaned back and closed his eyes.

“Arthur should have destroyed it.”

“Why?” Daniel asked.

“Because the documents were never supposed to become public.”

“Were they fraudulent?” I asked.

Edward opened his eyes.

“Some were. Some were legitimate. Others began as legitimate documents and were altered later. The difficulty was that once the transactions were mixed together, nobody could easily separate what had been done lawfully from what had been stolen.”

“Who altered them?”

Edward looked at the photograph.

“I did.”

The confession was so direct that none of us spoke.

Edward drew a breath.

“I was working for Charles Morgan's family when the property dispute began. Charles had inherited interests in several parcels of land, including one that Evelyn believed belonged to her mother's family. She was right about that part. The original deed had never been transferred properly.”

“Then why was a new agreement created?” Thomas asked.

“Because Charles wanted to settle the dispute without a public court case. Arthur arranged a meeting, and Samuel Price drafted an agreement that was supposed to compensate everyone involved.”

Edward paused.

“I changed the beneficiary information afterward. I thought I could move the disputed property into a temporary trust and correct the records once the other parties had accepted the settlement.”

“That sounds like fraud,” I said.

“It was fraud.”

He didn't attempt to defend himself.

“I told myself I was preventing a larger dispute. I thought the families would receive their money, the property would remain intact, and nobody would need to know how the original records had been mishandled.”

“What happened?”

“Evelyn found the altered documents. She realized that the trust had been created to conceal the original ownership rather than resolve it. She confronted me and demanded that I restore the records.”

“Did you refuse?”

“At first.”

Thomas's face tightened.

“And then?”

Edward looked directly at him.

“Then I learned that Evelyn had a child whose identity could complicate the inheritance dispute. I used that information to pressure her into delaying the complaint.”

Thomas rose from his chair.

“You threatened my mother?”

Edward didn't move.

“Yes.”

Thomas stared at him, his hands clenched at his sides.

I stood too, instinctively moving closer, but Thomas raised one hand to stop me.

“Tell me exactly what you did.”

Edward's voice grew quieter.

“I told Evelyn that if she exposed the altered documents, I would challenge her claim to the property and force a public investigation into your parentage. I believed that would frighten her into waiting until I could correct the records.”

“And she disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Did you have anything to do with that?”

Edward shook his head.

“I didn't arrange her disappearance. But I created the circumstances that made it easier for other people to silence her.”

The words settled over us.

For thirty years, we had searched for a single person responsible for Evelyn's disappearance. Edward's confession explained part of the scheme, but it didn't establish what had happened to her afterward.

“Who else knew?” I asked.

“Arthur. Samuel. Robert. Your mother may have known some of it, though I don't believe she understood the entire arrangement.”

“What about the payments made in her name?”

Edward examined the receipt.

“That account was created to make it appear that Helen had accepted compensation. I arranged the transfer, but I never confirmed that she received the money.”

My stomach tightened.

“You used my mother's identity.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she had been entrusted with the original documents. If it appeared that she had accepted payment, her credibility would be damaged if she ever tried to challenge the transaction.”

I thought of my mother's fear, the letter she had burned, and the years she had spent believing the truth might implicate her.

“You made her look guilty to protect yourself.”

Edward lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Thomas remained standing.

“And Robert?”

Edward looked at him.

“Robert discovered the alteration after Evelyn confronted me. He demanded that I restore the original records. I refused because I believed the dispute would destroy everyone involved.”

“So Dad helped you?”

“No. He tried to stop me.”

“Then why did he sign the transfer agreement?”

“Because I presented him with a version that appeared to be a temporary authorization. I told him it would allow the property to remain under neutral control while the dispute was reviewed. I altered the attached schedule afterward.”

Daniel placed a finger on the document.

“Can you prove that?”

Edward nodded.

“I kept the original drafts. They're in the workshop.”

He stood and led us through a side door into a room filled with filing cabinets, boxes, and old account books. The shelves were labeled by year, and the oldest records were stacked in cardboard containers beneath the windows.

Edward opened a cabinet and removed a folder.

Inside were several versions of the property agreement, each bearing different attachments. The earliest version named Evelyn as the beneficiary. The later version listed a private company.

My father's signature appeared on both.

But the date on the second copy had been altered.

I compared the documents carefully.

“Dad signed the original version before you changed it.”

“Yes.”

“Then he wasn't agreeing to the transfer shown in the final agreement.”

“No.”

I felt a rush of relief, followed immediately by anger at how much suffering had followed from the alteration.

“Why didn't Dad expose you?”

Edward looked toward the window.

“He tried. He took copies to Samuel Price and threatened to report me. But I told him that if he made the matter public, the investigation would also expose the private arrangements that had been made to protect Thomas.”

“What arrangements?”

Edward hesitated.

“Robert had taken Thomas away from Northfield because he believed the boy was in danger. He wanted to place him somewhere safe until the property dispute could be resolved. I knew that if the dispute became public, people would begin asking why Thomas had been moved and whether Evelyn had consented.”

“Did she?”

“I don't know.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

Edward opened another folder and removed a handwritten note.

“This was delivered to my office several months after Evelyn disappeared. It was signed by Robert.”

The note contained a short message.

I will not let the boy pay for what you have done. The original records will remain hidden until I can prove the full extent of the fraud. If Evelyn contacts you, tell her I will help her return to Thomas.

I read the note twice.

My father had known about the fraud, and he had intended to expose it. But he had also kept the records hidden, leaving Thomas without the truth and my mother burdened by suspicion.

“Did Evelyn ever contact you again?” I asked.

Edward shook his head.

“Not directly.”

Thomas stared at the note.

“Then why did someone continue sending letters to the school?”

Edward looked at him.

“Because I believe someone wanted you to remain uncertain about your mother's fate.”

“Who?”

Edward's face tightened.

“I suspect the person who controlled the trust after Samuel Price died.”

“Who was that?”

Edward removed a final document from the folder.

It was a transfer of administrative authority signed several years after my father's death. The trust had passed to a private company, whose director was listed as a woman named Rebecca Lawson.

Thomas and I exchanged a glance.

Peter Lawson's daughter had given us access to her father's papers. She had helped us find the Northfield records. And now her name appeared on the document that had taken control of the trust.

Edward watched our reactions.

“I don't know whether Rebecca understood what she inherited,” he said. “But someone has been using that company to maintain control of the records.”

I looked at the date.

The transfer had taken place six months before the storage locker was reopened under my name.

The same period when the school files had been accessed.

We had finally found a connection between the old fraud and the person who had been following us.

But whether Rebecca Lawson was responsible, or whether someone had used her position without her knowledge, remained uncertain.

Thomas gathered the copies.

“Then we're going to speak with Rebecca.”

Edward nodded.

“You should. But take care. If she's involved, she'll know how to make the evidence disappear.”

I looked at the original agreement bearing my father's signature.

For the first time, I could see the shape of what had happened. My father had been deceived into signing a document that was later altered. He had tried to correct the fraud, but his decision to keep the evidence hidden had left everyone vulnerable to the person who controlled the records.

He had been neither entirely innocent nor entirely guilty.

He had been a man who believed he could manage a dangerous secret without letting it destroy the people he loved.

And that belief had allowed the secret to survive him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Rebecca Lawson Denied Knowing About the Fraud, Until We Found the Original Appointment That Put Her in Control of Every Missing Record

The rural property was farther from the highway than we expected.
