Its receptionist remembered an older man who had come in with a cut on his forearm and bruising along one side of his face. He had declined a full examination, accepted basic wound care, and asked for directions to the nearest bus stop.

“He seemed tired,” she told Detective Harris. “Not confused. He knew exactly where he wanted to go. But he kept checking the window.”

“Did he give a name?”

“No. He said he didn’t want anyone contacted.”

The clinic’s security camera showed a man leaving through the side entrance. The footage was grainy, but the height and gait were consistent with Walter. The police circulated a still image to officers working along the coastal route and requested checks at nearby transport stations.

Daniel wanted to drive there immediately. Harris advised him against searching alone, explaining that if Walter was avoiding someone, an unexpected encounter could put both of them at risk.

“I’m not going to drag him home,” Daniel said. “I just want him to know we’re looking.”

“You can do that through us,” Harris replied. “If he wants contact, we’ll give him a safe way to make it.”

Daniel disliked the answer, but he understood it. For years, his father had treated protection as a reason to make decisions without consulting anyone. Daniel would not repeat the pattern simply because he was frightened of losing the chance to speak to him.

That afternoon, Harris arranged for a message to be left through a local officer at the clinic. It contained no demand and no questions about the records. It said only that Daniel knew Walter was alive, that the family was worried, and that they would listen if he chose to speak.

At home, Claire tried to keep ordinary life moving. She prepared dinner, helped Ben with his homework, and listened while Sophie explained a problem with a school project. Their children were old enough to recognize that something serious was happening, but young enough to need reminders that the world outside their family’s trouble still contained birthdays, assignments, and tomorrow’s plans.

After dinner, Ben carried Walter’s cup from the cupboard and set it beside the empty chair.

“Is that okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” Claire said.

“I don’t want him to think we forgot.”

Claire knelt beside him. “We haven’t forgotten. But you don’t have to wait by the chair every day.”

Ben considered this. “I know. I just want him to see it when he comes back.”

She kissed his forehead and let him leave the cup where he had placed it.

Meanwhile, the document review was beginning to produce a clearer picture of the original transfer. The trust had been created to separate the child’s future from a dispute over property and money. But the supporting declaration had concealed the pressure placed on Evelyn, and later records had treated her consent as unquestionable. Richard Vale’s involvement was now documented, although the precise extent of his responsibility remained under investigation.

Jonathan’s solicitor filed a request for an independent preservation order covering the surviving papers and any related financial records. Jonathan also authorized the release of Evelyn’s statement to the investigators, provided that her private correspondence would not be circulated publicly without a legal reason.

“I don’t want strangers reading her most personal words,” he told Claire. “I want the record to show what happened, not turn her into a story people can argue about.”

“That’s a fair distinction,” Claire said.

“And I don’t want the house.”

She looked at him carefully. “You don’t have to decide that today.”

“I know. But I’ve thought about it. If the property belongs in the trust, the lawyers can determine what should happen to it. I won’t treat it as compensation for what she lost.”

His decision did not settle the legal question, but it removed one source of pressure. The investigation could continue without the family treating the property as the prize at the end of the mystery.

Late that evening, Detective Harris called Daniel directly.

“We received a response to the message,” he said. “It came through the local officer. Your father wants to meet you.”

Daniel stood very still. “Where?”

“He hasn’t given a precise address yet. He says he’ll meet you at a public place tomorrow morning, provided you come alone and bring nothing connected to the investigation.”

Daniel glanced at Claire. The instruction sounded familiar, but the circumstances were different now. Walter was not asking him to accept another secret. He was asking for a conversation without papers, lawyers, or promises.

“I’ll go,” Daniel said. “But I’m not agreeing to anything beyond meeting him.”

“That’s understood,” Harris replied. “We’ll arrange a safe location and remain nearby. Your father knows the meeting will not be used to force him into custody unless there’s a separate legal reason.”

After the call, Daniel sat down. Claire placed a hand on his shoulder.

“What are you going to say first?” she asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t have to prepare a speech.”

“I’ve imagined this moment a hundred times. In some versions, I shout at him. In others, I ask him to explain everything. But now that it might happen, I can’t decide which question matters most.”

“Maybe you don’t need to decide in advance. Let him speak, and then tell him what you need him to understand.”

Daniel looked toward the chair. “I need him to understand that being afraid for us didn’t give him the right to leave us in the dark.”

“Then tell him that.”

“And if he says he did it for the family?”

“You can tell him that the family was part of the decision he should have trusted.”

For a long time, Daniel said nothing. Then he took Walter’s letter and placed it in a drawer instead of keeping it in his pocket. He would go to the meeting without documents, exactly as his father had requested. But he would not leave his own questions behind.

The next morning, the meeting was arranged at a small public garden near the bus station. The weather had cleared, though the benches were still damp from the previous night’s rain. Detective Harris’s team would remain nearby without interfering unless there was a safety concern.

Daniel arrived early and sat beneath a bare-limbed tree. Every passing man made him look up. He tried to remember his father as he had been before the disappearance: impatient with noisy television, careful about the garden gate, quietly attentive when the children were ill. Those memories did not erase the hurt, but neither did the hurt erase them.

At nine fifteen, a figure appeared at the far end of the path.

The man walked slowly, leaning on a dark stick. His coat hung loosely from his shoulders, and a fresh bandage showed beneath one cuff. He stopped several steps away from Daniel, as though uncertain whether he had the right to come closer.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Walter removed his hat.

“I wasn’t sure you would come,” he said.

Daniel rose from the bench. His face was pale, and his hands were trembling, but he did not step forward to embrace his father.

“You asked me to come alone,” Daniel replied. “So I came. But I’m not here to promise that everything will be all right.”

Walter lowered his eyes. “I know.”

“No. You don’t know yet. You don’t know what it was like to wake up and realize you had disappeared. You don’t know what it did to the children. And you don’t know how angry I am that you made a choice for all of us without giving us the chance to help.”

Walter listened without interrupting. When Daniel finished, the older man’s mouth tightened, but he did not defend himself.

“You’re right,” he said. “I told myself that if I carried the danger alone, I could keep it away from you. I was wrong about what that would cost.”

Daniel studied him, searching for the familiar explanation that would turn the admission into another excuse. It did not come.

“Are you ready to tell us the whole truth?” Daniel asked.

Walter looked toward the station beyond the garden wall. “I’m ready to tell you what I know. And I’m ready to admit what I still don’t know. But there is one piece of evidence Clara hasn’t released yet, and it may determine whether the person who threatened Evelyn can still interfere with the investigation.”

“Then we’ll protect the evidence,” Daniel said. “Together. But you won’t disappear again and call it protection.”

Walter’s eyes filled, though he made no move to touch his son. “I can’t ask you to forgive me today.”

“You shouldn’t.”

Daniel sat down again, leaving space on the bench. After a moment, Walter lowered himself beside him.

It was not a reunion. There was no embrace, no sudden absolution, no assurance that the years of silence could be repaired in a single morning. It was simply the first conversation in which neither man had tried to decide what the other was allowed to know.

Across the garden, Detective Harris watched from a discreet distance. The investigation remained unfinished. Richard Vale’s role still required formal scrutiny, the original records needed authentication, and Clara’s final evidence had yet to be examined.

But Walter was no longer missing.

And for the first time, the road toward the truth was one that father and son had agreed to walk together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Walter Finally Explained Why Evelyn’s Last Promise Had Been Kept a Secret

The clinic was a modest building beside a road that led toward the coast.
