He said the document review had identified a difference between the two versions of the rental agreement that was more significant than a change in wording. He emphasized that the finding did not settle who had made the change, but it helped narrow the questions investigators needed to ask.

I agreed to come in.

That night, I barely slept. I kept thinking about the signature-page message Emma had found. Mark had asked whether the page was included, and she had sent him the folder because she believed he needed the address for a delivery. I wondered whether the agreement had been built from that file, but I reminded myself that wondering was not proof.

At the station, Bennett showed me copies of the two documents. The first was the draft that described a proposed temporary arrangement. Its language suggested that the terms still needed approval. The second presented the arrangement as accepted and included additional wording that made it appear I had agreed to let Mark and Vanessa occupy the house.

The two documents shared the same transaction reference. The completed version also contained language absent from the draft. The review had identified differences in the document structure and the way the signature page appeared, but Bennett said the technical findings had not yet established who had inserted the page or whether the person responsible had acted alone.

“So the first document doesn't say I approved the move,” I said.

“Correct. It reads as a proposal rather than a completed agreement.”

“And the second one makes it look as though I did.”

“Yes.”

“Can you tell when the change happened?”

“The records give us some information about when copies were created or circulated, but not a complete account of every step. We’re comparing that information with the messages and the devices involved.”

I looked at the signature line. My name seemed strangely detached from me, reduced to a shape that someone could place on a page and use to claim I had made a decision.

“Did Mark provide these versions?” I asked.

“He provided one copy during his interview. Another was recovered through the materials Vanessa supplied. We are not treating possession as proof of authorship. We need to establish where each copy came from and how it changed.”

I nodded, though the distinction was difficult to accept emotionally. Mark had used the completed agreement to justify entering my home, and he had admitted that he expected me to object. Yet the question of who changed the document remained open.

Bennett told me the transaction reference was still being investigated. The records did not show a payment into my account, and the available financial information suggested that the money had been associated with an account connected to Mark. The precise source, purpose, and relationship to the agreement were not yet fully established.

“Did he tell you the money was rent?” I asked.

“He has given explanations that differ from the account he originally presented to Vanessa. We’re asking him to reconcile them.”

I thought about the thirty thousand dollars, the amount he had claimed was enough to establish that the arrangement was real. If the payment had never reached me, then it had never secured my consent. Whatever it meant to Mark, it had not purchased the right to enter my house.

“Is there anything you need me to do?” I asked.

“Continue preserving communications. If anyone contacts you about changing your statement, deleting records, or meeting privately to discuss the agreement, let us know. Don't try to obtain information by approaching people yourself.”

I promised I would follow that advice.

When I returned home, Rachel was waiting in the living room. She had offered to stay while I went to the station, but I had told her I would call if I needed anything. Seeing her there made the house feel less empty.

“They found something,” she said.

“They found a difference between the documents. The draft describes a proposal. The completed version presents it as approved.”

“And the signature?”

“They're still working out how it got there.”

Rachel frowned. “How can someone change a document like that and everyone just has to wait?”

“Because knowing what happened and proving who did it are different things.”

She leaned back. “I hate that you're the one who has to live with the uncertainty.”

“So do I.”

Later that afternoon, Vanessa sent me a message asking whether I would be willing to confirm that she had never received permission from me directly. I told her I had already provided my statement to Bennett and that she should make sure her own account remained accurate. I would not write a message for her to use as evidence or coach her on what to say.

She responded that she understood and had not intended to put me in that position. She said Mark had told her the agreement was legitimate because the payment and paperwork had already been handled. Now that the draft had been identified, she was struggling to understand why he had shown her only the completed version.

I did not answer that question. It was one for Mark.

That evening, an email from him appeared in my inbox. He said he had heard that the investigators were focusing on technical details and urged me not to let “a paperwork dispute” destroy the possibility of reconciliation. He wrote that he had never wanted me to feel unsafe and that he believed the house arrangement could have been resolved privately if I had given him a chance.

The message was carefully worded, but it still avoided the central fact: I had not given him permission to move in.

I forwarded it to Bennett.

Then I deleted nothing, changed nothing, and sent no reply.

The next day, Emma called. She had received a message from Mark asking whether she remembered sending the closing folder before or after he first mentioned the house. She told him she had already given the original conversation to investigators and would not guess at a timeline beyond what the messages showed.

“He sounded angry,” she said.

“Did he threaten you?”

“No. He said I was helping people misunderstand him.”

“What did you say?”

“I told him I wasn't going to explain his intentions for him.”

I let out a breath I had not realized I was holding. “That was the right response.”

“I don't want to keep being the person who fixes things after he makes a decision.”

“Then don't take responsibility for decisions you didn't make.”

She thanked me, and we talked for a few minutes about her work. Before hanging up, she asked if she could visit next weekend. I told her we could arrange a time, and she promised to check with me before making plans. The exchange felt ordinary, which made it precious.

On Thursday, Bennett called with another update. The document review had not identified the author of the altered version. The investigators were examining the source files and the communications through which the documents had circulated. The transaction reference remained an important point of comparison, but it had not yet provided a complete answer about the money or the agreement.

He also told me that the anonymous inquiry to my real estate agent had still not been attributed to a verified sender. The agent had preserved the original email and the associated records. The photograph of me outside the property remained unexplained, and the late-night visitor had not been identified.

“So we know more about the agreement,” I said, “but not who else was involved.”

“That’s accurate.”

“Could the document and the anonymous inquiry have come from the same person?”

“They could have. We don't have evidence establishing that connection.”

“And the person at the side door?”

“Still unidentified. We have no confirmed link between that person and the rental agreement.”

I thanked him for being direct. After the call, I wrote the update in the timeline and resisted the urge to draw lines between the entries. A pattern could guide questions, but it could not replace answers.

That evening, I sat alone at the kitchen table with the draft and completed agreement in separate folders. The difference between them was plain. One described something that might happen if the necessary approval was obtained. The other presented that approval as though it had already been given.

I had never given it.

For months, I had been proud of the house because it represented a clean beginning. Now I understood that ownership was not merely a name on a deed or a signature at the bottom of a closing document. It also meant having the final say over who entered, who stayed, and what promises were made in my name.

Mark had behaved as though he could turn an expectation into permission by moving quickly enough. He had treated my silence as something he could interpret, my daughter's trust as something he could use, and my property as a solution to a problem he wanted to solve.

I could not yet prove who had altered the agreement. I could not identify the anonymous sender or the person who had approached the side door. I could not tell whether every unexplained detail belonged to the same chain of events.

But I did not need those answers to know that the completed agreement did not represent my decision.

I placed the documents back in their folders, locked the cabinet, and checked the front door. The new keypad glowed briefly beneath my touch before going dark.

For once, I did not look at it and wonder who might try to enter.

I looked at it and remembered that no one had the right to do so without my permission.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: Mark’s Explanation Changed Again When Investigators Asked Him to Account for the Signature Page

Officer Bennett called me on Monday afternoon and asked whether I could come to the station the following morning.
