Her voice was quieter than usual, and she asked whether I had a few minutes to speak privately. I told her I could talk, but I reminded her that anything concerning the disputed agreement or the money should also be provided to Officer Bennett.

“I understand,” she said. “That's why I'm calling. I found something in an email that I think they need to know about.”

She explained that the message had been sent by Mark before the moving truck arrived. She had originally overlooked it because it appeared among ordinary conversations about their housing situation. After the officers asked her to preserve the correspondence, she searched for references to the house and discovered the message again.

“What does it say?” I asked.

“He was talking about your property before he showed me the completed agreement. He said the place would be available and that the paperwork was being handled.”

I stopped stirring my coffee.

“Did he say that I had agreed?”

“Not in that exact message. He said the arrangement was nearly ready and that he was waiting for one final thing.”

“What final thing?”

“I don't know. That's why I wanted to call you.”

I asked whether she had forwarded the original email to the investigators. She confirmed that she had. She had also saved the surrounding messages so the email would not be examined without its context.

“That was the right thing to do,” I told her.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. I could hear her moving around in the background, perhaps gathering the papers she had found. I wondered how many times she had reread Mark's explanations, trying to determine when the story she believed had begun to diverge from the events that actually occurred.

“Do you think he planned this before he told me about it?” she asked.

“I don't know, Vanessa. The email may help establish the timeline, but I can't tell you what he intended.”

She sighed.

“He keeps saying he was trying to solve a housing problem. He says he thought you would eventually agree because Emma had told him you wanted to help.”

I looked toward the living room, where the sunlight fell across the chair I had moved beside the window.

“Emma never had permission to make that decision for me,” I said. “And I never told Mark he could live here.”

“I know that now.”

I did not challenge her. I had already given my statement, and I did not need to convince Vanessa through another conversation. The documents would have to establish what they could, and she would have to decide what she believed about her own marriage.

Before we ended the call, I asked her to keep the email and all related messages intact. She promised she would cooperate with any further requests from the investigators.

I sent Officer Bennett a brief note confirming that Vanessa had told me about the correspondence. He replied that the original email had been received and would be reviewed alongside the other material.

That afternoon, I returned to the house after running errands. I had begun leaving the security application closed for longer periods, but I still checked the access history when I returned. There had been no new attempts to enter, and the cameras showed no unusual activity.

I walked through the living room and straightened the books on the shelf. The small photograph of Emma and me beside the lake remained where Rachel had placed it. I had decided not to move it, although I was still learning how to look at it without remembering the code she had shared.

I missed the uncomplicated closeness we had once taken for granted. Yet I was beginning to understand that restoring that closeness could not mean pretending the past week had never happened.

Emma had visited me on Friday and had asked permission before coming inside. She had listened when I explained why she would not receive a replacement code immediately. Those were small changes, but they mattered because they showed that she was beginning to act differently rather than merely promising to feel differently.

I wanted to encourage that progress without rushing it.

At four o'clock, my real estate agent called. She had received a follow-up question from the investigators about the anonymous email asking whether the house was still available. She confirmed that she had provided the original message and her response, including the available sender information.

“Did they ask you to identify the person?” I asked.

“They asked whether I recognized the address. I don't. They also wanted to know whether I had shared anything about you with the sender. I told them I hadn't.”

I thanked her for keeping the records and asked whether she had received any further messages from the same address.

“No,” she said. “Nothing after that first inquiry.”

When we ended the call, I opened my timeline and added the latest information. The anonymous sender remained unidentified. I recorded that the agent had preserved the email and had denied disclosing my private information.

I did not write that Mark had sent it. I could imagine several possibilities, but imagination was not evidence. If the investigators established a connection, I would deal with it then.

A new email from Officer Bennett arrived shortly afterward. He asked whether I could confirm the approximate time of my first viewing and whether I had any photographs taken that day. I checked my phone and found two pictures of the house's exterior. Neither showed the street clearly, and neither helped identify the vehicle Emma had described.

I sent the photographs and confirmed the appointment time from the original email. I also explained that I remembered seeing a car parked across the street but had not recognized the driver.

Officer Bennett thanked me and said the information would be added to the timeline. He did not suggest that the car was connected to the anonymous inquiry or to the later attempt at my side door.

I was grateful he did not encourage that assumption. The unexplained events were unsettling enough without turning them into a single story before there was evidence to support it.

That evening, Emma called again.

“Mom, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“If Dad really thought you would agree eventually, why didn't he just wait and ask you?”

The question surprised me. For the first time, she seemed to be examining his explanation rather than repeating it.

“I can't answer that for him,” I said. “You would have to ask him. But even if he expected me to say yes, that wouldn't give him permission to enter the house before I agreed.”

“I know.”

“An assumption isn't consent, Emma.”

She was quiet for a moment.

“I keep thinking about the messages. When he asked me for the code, he made it sound as though everything was already arranged. I should have checked with you.”

“Yes,” I said gently. “You should have.”

“I wanted to believe him because it was easier than having an argument with him.”

I understood that feeling more than I wanted to admit. For years, I had also accepted explanations because challenging them required energy I did not always have. I had told myself that I was preserving peace, when sometimes I was simply postponing a confrontation.

“It's important that you recognize that now,” I told her. “But recognizing it doesn't mean you have to decide what every other piece of evidence means.”

She said she had been thinking about how often her father asked her to pass messages between us. He had complained that I was difficult to reach and suggested that she could help resolve misunderstandings before they became arguments.

“Sometimes I thought I was helping both of you,” she said.

“You were trying to help. But you shouldn't have been put in the position of making decisions for me.”

She agreed quietly.

We spoke for several more minutes about boundaries and the difference between supporting a family member and becoming responsible for that person's choices. I told her that she did not have to stop loving her father, and she did not have to defend every action he took.

“I don't know how to do both,” she admitted.

“You learn by being honest about what happened, even when it makes someone uncomfortable.”

When we ended the call, I felt a cautious sense of relief. Emma was not suddenly free of the confusion Mark had created, but she was asking questions of her own. That was a better starting point than another promise that everything would be fine.

The next day, Vanessa sent a message saying the investigators had asked her for clarification about the email. She had answered their questions and provided the surrounding correspondence. She did not share the contents with me, and I did not ask her to.

Later that afternoon, Officer Bennett called with an update.

“The correspondence gives us additional information about when your former husband was discussing the property,” he said. “We're comparing that information with the dates on the draft and completed agreement.”

“Does it establish when the agreement was prepared?”

“Not conclusively. It helps us understand the sequence, but we're still examining the source of the documents.”

I thanked him for explaining.

Before hanging up, I asked whether he had any update about the thirty-thousand-dollar transfer.

“We're still waiting for information that will help establish the transaction's origin and destination. We don't want to make assumptions based on the partial record.”

That answer did not resolve the question, but it confirmed that the money was being examined independently of Mark's explanation.

I returned to the kitchen and made a fresh cup of tea. The house was quiet, and the late afternoon sun moved slowly across the floor. For the first time, I did not feel compelled to open the security application while I waited for the water to boil.

I had done what I could.

The ownership records were preserved. The emails had been provided. The officers had my statement, Emma's messages, Vanessa's correspondence, and the different versions of the agreement.

I could not force the investigation to move faster, and I could not make Mark admit to something he was unwilling to acknowledge. I could only continue to cooperate and protect the home I had bought for myself.

Before bed, I checked the locks once and went upstairs without reviewing the footage again.

The mystery of the anonymous email remained. So did the identity of the late-night visitor. But the central issue was no longer clouded by my fear that I needed to explain myself to everyone who heard Mark's version first.

I had never agreed to the rental.

I had never received the supposed payment.

And I had never authorized anyone to make those decisions for me.

Those facts remained true, no matter how many explanations Mark offered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Emma Discovered Why Her Father Wanted the Closing Papers, and Our Family’s Oldest Habit Finally Came Into the Open

The next morning, I received a call from Vanessa before I had finished my coffee.
