I spent the first few days organizing the reading room, sorting through books I had already finished, and making a list of places I wanted to visit when the weather warmed. Ethan called regularly, and Samantha sent me a photograph of the small garden they had started planning outside their own home.

For the first time, I could enjoy those ordinary exchanges without wondering whether they would eventually become requests for money, favors, or emotional reassurance. I still paid attention to the way people treated me, but I no longer assumed that every gesture carried a hidden demand.

Then, in the second week of January, Ethan called with news about Darlene.

“She had a fall yesterday,” he said. “Nothing life-threatening, but she injured her ankle. Samantha took her to the hospital, and she's back home now.”

I sat down at the kitchen table.

“Is she all right?”

“She'll recover. The doctor told her to rest and avoid putting too much weight on it for a while.”

“I'm glad it wasn't worse.”

Ethan sounded tired.

“Samantha is worried about her. She's been helping with groceries and making sure Darlene has what she needs.”

“That makes sense.”

He paused.

“Mom, I wanted to ask whether you'd be willing to speak to her.”

The request surprised me.

“Darlene?”

“Yes. Samantha thinks it might help if you called. She says her mother has been feeling isolated, and I think she's beginning to realize that she pushed people away.”

I looked toward the window. The garden was damp from overnight rain, and the ocean beyond it was hidden beneath low clouds.

I felt compassion for Darlene. An injury could make anyone feel vulnerable, especially someone who was accustomed to organizing everything herself. But I also remembered the years of sharp remarks, the insinuations about my independence, and the way she had treated my boundaries as a personal insult.

“I'll think about it,” I told Ethan.

He accepted the answer without pressuring me.

After we hung up, I sat quietly for several minutes. I did not want to call Darlene merely because everyone expected me to be the gracious one. At the same time, I did not want to become so protective of my boundaries that I lost the ability to recognize another person's suffering.

The question was not whether Darlene deserved compassion. It was whether I could offer compassion without returning to the role I had spent years trying to leave behind.

That evening, I spoke with Margaret. I explained what had happened and asked for her perspective.

“Do you want to call her?” Margaret asked.

“Part of me does. Another part remembers how quickly she turns kindness into an expectation.”

“Then make the call because you want to express concern, not because you feel responsible for what happens afterward.”

Her advice stayed with me.

The next morning, I called Darlene.

She answered after several rings.

“Hello?”

“Darlene, it's Linda.”

There was a pause.

“Oh. Hello.”

“I heard about your fall. I wanted to see how you're feeling.”

She seemed surprised.

“My ankle is painful, but the doctor says it should heal. Samantha has been helping me.”

“I'm glad she's there for you. I hope you recover quickly.”

“Thank you.”

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke. I could hear a television in the background and the faint sound of something being placed on a table.

Finally, Darlene said, “I didn't expect you to call.”

“I understand.”

“After everything that's happened, I thought you wanted nothing to do with me.”

“I haven't wanted to argue with you,” I replied. “That isn't the same as wishing you harm.”

She was quiet.

“I suppose I haven't made things easy,” she said at last.

It was not an apology, but it was more acknowledgment than I had expected.

“No,” I said gently. “You haven't.”

She gave a small, uncomfortable laugh.

“You haven't made things easy either.”

I considered the statement.

“That's possible. I know I could have communicated some of my feelings sooner. But I won't pretend that my decisions about my home or my birthday were unreasonable.”

“I didn't say they were.”

“No. But you have treated them that way before.”

She sighed.

“I suppose I have.”

The conversation was awkward, and I did not try to make it smoother by telling her that the past no longer mattered. We spoke briefly about her recovery, the doctor’s advice, and whether she had enough food at home. When she mentioned that Samantha had been helping her, I told her I was glad she had support.

Before ending the call, I said, “I hope you feel better soon.”

“Thank you, Linda.”

I placed the phone on the table and sat quietly. I had offered concern without promising to become her caregiver, mediator, or confidante. I had not demanded an apology, and I had not surrendered my understanding of what had happened.

For the first time, I felt that compassion and boundaries could exist in the same conversation.

Over the following days, I did not call Darlene again. I knew she was recovering, and Samantha continued helping her. If Ethan mentioned an update, I listened, but I did not insert myself into the arrangements.

A week later, Samantha sent me a message thanking me for calling her mother.

“She seemed relieved afterward,” she wrote. “I think she needed to know that you didn't hate her.”

I replied that I did not hate Darlene. I simply wanted our relationship to be respectful.

Samantha answered that she understood.

Then, a few days later, Darlene called me herself.

“I wanted to thank you for checking on me,” she said. “I know things have been difficult between us.”

“Yes, they have.”

“I've been thinking about the past year.”

I waited.

“I was angry when you bought the villa. I thought you were making a statement about the family. Then you refused to let us stay, and I decided you were trying to punish Ethan.”

I listened without interrupting.

“I think I was so accustomed to everyone accommodating me that I didn't stop to consider whether you had a reason for saying no.”

The admission surprised me.

“Thank you for acknowledging that,” I said.

She took a breath.

“I still don't agree with every decision you've made.”

“You don't have to.”

“I know. But I think I should have respected your right to make them.”

I felt something inside me soften, although I knew that one conversation could not erase the past.

“I appreciate you saying that, Darlene.”

She did not offer a dramatic apology, and I did not ask her to. We spoke for a few more minutes before ending the call.

Afterward, I walked out to the terrace and sat beneath the pale afternoon sky. I thought about how easily I could have refused to call her, telling myself that she had never shown me the same kindness. I would have been justified in maintaining my distance.

But I was glad I had chosen to express concern.

The call had not required me to pretend that we were close. It had not obligated me to forgive every insult or accept future disrespect. It had simply allowed me to acknowledge that another person was hurt without making her pain my responsibility.

That evening, Ethan called.

“Samantha told me that you and Darlene spoke.”

“We did.”

“How did it go?”

“Better than I expected.”

He sounded relieved.

“I'm glad.”

I could hear him preparing to ask whether I thought things would change between us, but he stopped himself.

“What matters is that we spoke honestly,” I told him. “We don't have to become friends overnight.”

“Right.”

“And you don't have to manage our relationship for us. If Darlene wants to speak to me, she can call. If I want to contact her, I will. You don't need to carry messages between us.”

He laughed softly.

“That would make things easier.”

“It would make things more honest.”

We ended the call a few minutes later.

As the evening light faded, I returned to the reading room and picked up my book. I felt grateful that I had been able to respond to Darlene's vulnerability without abandoning myself.

For years, I had believed that kindness meant saying yes, even when I wanted to say no. Now I understood that kindness could be freely offered, without being used as proof that I had forgotten every hurt.

I could wish Darlene well.

I could hope that she continued to recover.

And I could still protect the peace I had worked so hard to build.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: The Letter I Received From My Son Made Me Reconsider What It Meant to Leave a Legacy

The new year began quietly at the villa.
