The building stood behind a row of bare trees, and the curtains were drawn despite the daylight. A weathered car sat in the driveway, its tires flattened slightly from disuse.

David knocked twice.

A man in his late seventies opened the door. He was thin and stooped, with a face marked by deep lines and pale eyes that moved constantly between the visitors. He wore a brown cardigan and held a walking stick in one hand.

“You brought the ledger?” he asked.

David showed him the sealed evidence bag containing the photographs and copies of the relevant pages.

Bennett nodded and stepped aside.

“Then perhaps we can finally finish what should have been done thirty years ago.”

He led us into a small sitting room where folders had been arranged in neat stacks across a table. Several contained hospital correspondence, while others held property records and copies of the guardianship agreement. Bennett had preserved more evidence than we expected, though much of it appeared to be incomplete.

He asked us to sit, then examined the ledger copies.

“This is the record I thought had been destroyed,” he said. “I never knew whether Thomas managed to keep another copy.”

“Who ordered the false death entry?” David asked.

Bennett looked toward the window.

“Before I answer, I need to know whether Thomas is alive.”

The question stunned us.

“You were the hospital administrator,” I said. “You must know what happened to him.”

“I know what was entered into the records. I don't know whether the man who died in the accident was Thomas Ellis.”

I felt the familiar coldness spread through my chest.

“Then why did you allow the death certificate to be issued?”

“Because I was told that the identity had been confirmed by the police. I had no reason to believe the body belonged to someone else.”

“But you knew the hospital records had been altered.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you report the fraud?”

Bennett lowered his head.

“Because I had already participated in it.”

He explained that the original guardianship agreement had been presented to him as a temporary measure designed to protect Jonathan Ward from people involved in the property investigation. Thomas had told him that the child's family was being threatened and that the arrangement would prevent the child from being used as leverage.

Bennett believed the explanation at first. He authorized the temporary restriction on the records and agreed to hold the original paperwork until the legal dispute was resolved.

Then a lawyer representing the property company approached him with a different request. The lawyer wanted the child's record changed permanently and the original authorization removed from the hospital file. He claimed that the change was necessary to prevent the child from being identified during the investigation.

Bennett refused.

The lawyer returned several days later with documents showing that the hospital had received payments from companies connected to the property scheme. The payments had been made under false names, but the records appeared to show that Bennett had approved them.

“He told me that if I refused to cooperate, he would make it look as though I had taken the money myself,” Bennett said. “I was frightened. I had a family, a mortgage, and a career. I thought I could make the change temporarily and correct it later.”

“Did you know the child would be declared dead?” Daniel asked.

“No. That came afterward.”

Bennett admitted that the false death entry had been authorized by the lawyer and entered by another hospital employee. By the time he learned what had happened, the original record had disappeared, and the hospital had begun treating the amended version as official.

“Who was the lawyer?” Evelyn asked.

Bennett opened a folder and removed a letter bearing the name of a man called Victor Hale.

Michael recognized the name immediately.

“Hale worked with the property company,” he said. “He handled several of the transactions I was asked to sign.”

Bennett nodded.

“He was the person who ordered the amendment. Ruth Ellis requested that the records be changed, but she believed she was authorizing a temporary correction. Hale used her request to justify something much more serious.”

I thought of Ruth's silence and the notation in the ledger. She had participated in the arrangement, but she might not have understood that her request would lead to a false death record. That did not erase her responsibility. It did, however, suggest that someone had deliberately exploited her fear.

“What happened to Victor Hale?” David asked.

“He died twelve years ago,” Bennett replied. “But before his death, he transferred his records to a private archive. I tried to obtain them, but I was told they had been destroyed.”

Evelyn glanced at the green ledger.

“Could the archive be connected to the storage unit?”

“Possibly. Hale used several storage facilities. He believed that keeping records in separate places would make it difficult for investigators to reconstruct the transactions.”

We already knew that the documents had been divided among several locations. The discovery of the green ledger confirmed that the arrangement had been deliberate.

Bennett opened another folder and removed a photograph of Thomas standing beside a dark car. It resembled the picture Evelyn had brought from her father's papers, but the date printed in the corner was different.

This photograph had been taken four years after Thomas's supposed death.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

“Victor Hale's files. Thomas came to see me shortly before the photograph was taken. He asked me to correct the hospital records and restore Jonathan's identity.”

“Did you?”

“No. I told him the records had been transferred to a legal department and that I could no longer alter them without exposing the original fraud.”

“Was he angry?”

“He was desperate. He said Jonathan had been found and that the boy was in danger again.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Did Thomas tell you where Jonathan was?”

“No. He said someone was trying to use the child to gain control of the property records.”

I looked at the photograph again. Thomas appeared older than he had in the wedding picture, but his posture and face were unmistakable. If the photograph was genuine, someone had seen him alive years after his supposed death.

“Then he survived the accident,” I said.

Bennett shook his head.

“The photograph proves that someone resembling Thomas was alive. I cannot tell you whether he was the same man I knew before the accident.”

The distinction was frustrating, but it was honest.

Bennett explained that Thomas had asked him to meet at a railway station shortly afterward. He arrived carrying a small case and told Bennett that he intended to leave the country under a different name. Before departing, he handed Bennett a sealed envelope containing instructions for restoring Jonathan's identity.

Bennett had kept the envelope for years, believing that opening it might expose him to prosecution. After Thomas disappeared, he placed it in a locked cabinet and never touched it again.

“Where is it now?” I asked.

Bennett rose slowly and walked to a cabinet near the fireplace. He unlocked a drawer and removed a thick envelope sealed with red wax. The front bore my name.

Margaret Ellis.

I recognized Thomas's handwriting.

Bennett handed it to me.

“He told me that if anyone came looking for the truth about the two boys, I should give this to you. He said you were the only person who could decide what should happen next.”

My hands trembled as I broke the seal.

Inside were several pages of handwritten notes and a small photograph. The first page began with a confession.

Margaret, if you are reading this, then I have failed to correct the harm I caused. I need you to know that the decision to protect Jonathan was mine, but the decision to erase him was not.

I stopped reading.

The letter described Thomas's role in the original guardianship arrangement. He had agreed to help conceal Jonathan's identity because he believed the boy was in danger. He later discovered that Victor Hale had used the arrangement to conceal financial transactions and protect the people involved in the property scheme.

Thomas had tried to reverse the deception, but Hale threatened to expose Michael's involvement in the fraudulent transactions and implicate Ruth in the altered records. Thomas believed that if he remained visible, the others would destroy the evidence and permanently erase Jonathan from the official record.

The letter did not excuse his actions. Thomas admitted that he had lied to me, allowed the false death entry to stand, and left Daniel to grow up believing that his father was dead.

He claimed that he had done so because he believed disappearing would give him time to collect evidence against Hale and restore Jonathan's identity.

But the final page contained a detail that made my heart stop.

Thomas wrote that the man who died in the river had not been him.

He had been someone who agreed to take his place in exchange for money and protection. Thomas had arranged the deception with the help of a person he trusted, believing that the false death would allow him to investigate Hale without being followed.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

Michael Reed.

I looked up at the man sitting across the room.

Michael had gone completely still.

“I never agreed to help Thomas fake his death,” he said.

Bennett's face tightened.

“Then someone used your name to arrange it.”

Michael stared at the photograph in my hand.

And for the first time since this investigation began, we understood that the false identity might not have belonged to Thomas alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: THE NAME SOMEONE STOLE

Harold Bennett's address led us to a small house on the edge of a village north of the city.
