A streetlamp illuminated the bonnet, and the windshield had begun to mist at the edges. I wiped a clear patch with my sleeve and stared through it, trying to understand what the accountant had told me.

Some transfers had been made through an account associated with Daniel.

The phrase was carefully chosen. Martin had not said Daniel received the money personally, nor had he accused him of taking it. But he had seen enough to connect my husband to transactions that my father had suspected were improper.

I called Helen and relayed the conversation. She asked me to send Martin's contact details and the information about the missing report.

“Do not approach Daniel with this yet,” she said. “We need to obtain the records independently. If he has documents that have not been disclosed, we want to know what they are before he has an opportunity to alter or destroy anything.”

I promised I would not confront him.

At home, Daniel was sitting in the kitchen with a plate of untouched food. He looked up when I entered and asked whether I had found anything at my father's house.

“Some old accounting records,” I replied.

“Did they tell you anything?”

“Not enough yet.”

He studied me for a moment, then pushed the plate away.

“Claire, I need to ask you something.”

I waited.

“If Northbridge offers to settle the debt, would you consider accepting?”

The question caught me off guard. “Why would they offer to settle it?”

“Because they may want to avoid a dispute.”

“Did Victor tell you that?”

“Not directly.”

“Then who did?”

Daniel hesitated. “Someone I used to work with.”

I felt a familiar chill.

“Richard Cole?”

He looked away.

“He contacted me.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Before or after I received the anonymous message?”

His expression changed.

“What message?”

I had not told him about the second warning, because there had not been one. I had only mentioned the message from Richard, which Helen had seen. Daniel's reaction suggested that he was searching for a piece of information he did not possess.

“Nothing,” I said. “I'm asking about your conversation with Richard.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“He said the company could offer a reduced settlement if we stopped pursuing the old agreement. He told me it would be better for everyone if we resolved the matter quietly.”

“Everyone except the people whose money disappeared.”

“He said the accounting issues were complicated.”

“Did he mention Alder Consulting?”

Daniel went still.

The change was small but unmistakable. His fingers stopped moving, and his eyes fixed on mine.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“My father's notebook.”

He swallowed.

“Claire, you need to be careful with what you think you understand. Those companies were used for legitimate business purposes.”

“Then why did you react that way when I mentioned it?”

“I didn't react.”

“You stopped breathing.”

He pushed his chair back and stood.

“I'm not doing this again.”

I watched him walk toward the hallway.

“Did you receive money through Alder Consulting?”

He stopped but did not turn around.

“Not personally.”

The answer was so narrow that it told me almost nothing.

“Did an account associated with you receive money?”

Daniel remained silent.

I felt a sharp pressure behind my ribs. I wanted to demand an answer, but I remembered Helen's warning. If I confronted him without the records, he could dismiss the questions as accusations or offer another explanation designed to delay the truth.

“I'm going to bed,” I said.

He turned at last.

“Claire, if you're going to involve lawyers, you should understand that I may have to protect myself.”

“You should have thought about that before you forged my name.”

I left him standing in the hallway.

The following morning, Helen contacted Martin Shaw through the accounting firm's formal procedures. She confirmed that I was the beneficiary of my father's estate and requested the records needed to investigate the payments. Martin agreed to prepare a statement describing his work and the circumstances in which the review had been suspended.

He also agreed to preserve the working copy of the report until the firm had verified what could lawfully be disclosed.

Several days passed before the firm responded. During that time, I began keeping a written record of every conversation with Daniel concerning the debt, the company, or my father's property. I noted dates, times, and the exact words I could remember. Helen explained that contemporaneous notes could help establish a timeline, although they would not replace original documents.

Daniel became increasingly withdrawn. He spent long periods in the study with his phone and laptop, sometimes emerging only to ask whether I had heard from Helen.

I stopped answering questions about the investigation.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, I received a call from a number belonging to Northbridge's legal department. The caller introduced herself as a solicitor representing the company and asked whether I would attend a formal meeting with Victor Hale.

I referred her to Helen.

An hour later, Helen called me back.

“Northbridge has agreed to provide the original financing records,” she said. “They have also confirmed that a separate account was used to process payments related to the Mercer Street project.”

“Whose account?”

“They have not identified the account holder in the correspondence. We will need the underlying transaction records.”

“Does that mean Daniel could have received the money?”

“It means we should not rule out that possibility.”

She reminded me not to assume that a transfer through an account proved personal benefit. The account could have been used for legitimate business expenses, or the payments could have passed through it for another reason. We needed the complete trail.

I asked when we would see the records.

“Next week, assuming the company follows through.”

That evening, Daniel told me he was going out to meet a former colleague. He did not offer a name, and I did not ask for one.

After he left, I went into the study to collect the folder of documents he had given me. I wanted to make sure nothing had been overlooked before I delivered the remaining copies to Helen.

The folder was still in the cabinet, but a gap had appeared where several printed emails had been stacked. I searched the desk and the shelves without finding them.

I checked the envelope in which I had placed the copied documents. The pages were there, but one email was missing: the message from Richard Cole instructing Daniel to obtain an updated signature before the next review.

I remembered placing it beneath the letter from my father.

Now it was gone.

I searched the room again, slower this time, checking between folders and beneath the desk blotter. Nothing.

I called Helen.

“Did you remove any documents from the folder?” she asked.

“No.”

“Has anyone else had access to it?”

“Daniel.”

She advised me to preserve the remaining records and avoid accusing him of taking the email until I could establish what had happened. She also recommended that I record the missing document in my notes and notify her in writing.

When I ended the call, I stood in the study doorway and looked at the closed laptop on Daniel's desk.

I had no proof that he had removed the page. It might have been misplaced, or he might have taken it for his lawyer. But the timing made it difficult to ignore the possibility that he had begun trying to control the evidence.

I photographed the contents of the folder and locked the remaining originals in a small document case. Then I took the case to Helen's office the next morning.

She listened while I described the missing email and added the information to her file.

“From this point on, keep the original documents somewhere secure,” she said. “And do not leave copies where your husband can access them without your knowledge.”

I nodded.

Before I left, Helen showed me an update from Martin Shaw. The accountant had located the working report and was preparing a formal statement. He had also identified several transfers to Alder Consulting that did not correspond to documented renovation expenses.

The report did not yet establish who ultimately received the money, but it showed that the transfers had been approved through a process involving both Richard Cole and a financial account connected to Daniel.

I read the summary twice.

“Could this prove Daniel was part of the scheme?”

“It could establish that he was involved in processing certain transactions,” Helen said. “Whether he understood their purpose, benefited from them, or knowingly assisted in concealing them will require further evidence.”

I left the office with the report's summary in my bag.

That afternoon, Daniel returned home early. He looked at the document case I was carrying and asked what I had taken to Helen.

“Records concerning the estate.”

“Did you show her the emails?”

“Some of them.”

He looked away.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “There are things about the investment I haven't told you.”

I felt my shoulders tense.

“What things?”

He sat down slowly.

“The money wasn't supposed to pass through my account. Richard said it was a temporary arrangement because the company's accounts were being reviewed. He promised that everything would be reconciled later.”

“Did you agree?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was already in debt, and he told me the transfer would help keep the project alive. I thought it would be reversed before anyone noticed.”

I stared at him.

“Did you receive any of that money?”

He looked at his hands.

“Some of it paid my debts.”

The admission left no room for the explanation he had been trying to construct.

“How much?”

“I don't know the exact amount.”

“You always say that when the number is something you don't want me to hear.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“I wasn't trying to steal from you.”

“You used my name to obtain money, then used some of the transfers to pay your own debts. What would you call it?”

He could not answer.

I picked up my bag and went to the spare bedroom. For the first time, I began to understand that the missing money might not have disappeared through careless accounting alone. Some of it might have been used to rescue Daniel from the consequences of his own choices, while he allowed my father to believe the project could still be saved.

And if that was true, then the debt notice on our dining table represented only a fraction of what I had lost.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: A Forgotten Bank Record Connected Daniel to the Missing Funds, but My Father’s Final Instructions Revealed Another Secret

I stayed in the parked car long after Martin Shaw ended the call.
