The sedan across the street had disappeared before midnight, but its absence offered little comfort. Whoever had been watching the house knew I had found the notebook. They also knew that I had begun asking questions.

At dawn, I packed the hospital bracelets, the notebook, and the photograph into a small case. I put the case in the trunk of my car, then checked the locks on every door before leaving for Rebecca's office.

The bank was on the other side of town, in a brick building that had stood beside the courthouse for nearly a century. Rebecca met me in the parking lot and accompanied me inside.

The manager examined the silver key, verified our identification, and led us to a private room. He returned several minutes later with a narrow metal box.

I expected documents, perhaps a stack of letters or another ledger.

Instead, the box contained a sealed envelope, a small cassette tape, and a folded sheet of paper with my name written across the front.

My hands trembled as I opened the envelope.

The letter was from Grandpa.

Ellie,

If you have reached this point, Daniel has come back, and you have begun to understand that his return has nothing to do with grief.

I wish I could explain everything to you myself. I wanted to tell you when you were younger, but I was afraid that the truth would make you question every person who had ever loved you. I hoped I could find a way to protect you without forcing you to carry the burden of what happened.

That hope was a mistake.

The blue ledger contains the financial records. The black notebook contains the names of the people who helped conceal them. Neither tells the whole story.

The original hospital records are in storage unit 214. You must retrieve them before Daniel does.

There is something else you need to know.

The child I brought home from Saint Agnes was not the child everyone believed her to be.

I stopped reading.

The room seemed to tilt around me. I gripped the edge of the table, trying to make the sentence mean something other than what it plainly said.

Rebecca reached toward me but didn't touch my arm.

"Take your time," she said.

I read the passage again.

The child I brought home from Saint Agnes was not the child everyone believed her to be.

My birth certificate lay in the fireproof box at home. My school records, passport, and every document that identified me had been built around the same name.

Ellie Mercer.

If Grandpa had brought home the wrong child, then who was I?

I forced myself to continue.

Your parents know enough to be dangerous, but they do not know everything. Daniel has spent years trying to recover documents that could expose him. He believes the ledger will prove that he is entitled to the property and that the records were altered without his consent.

He is wrong about one thing.

The house was never the real prize.

The people who paid for its protection wanted the records destroyed. I refused. I have spent the rest of my life making sure that what happened could not be erased completely.

I have hidden the evidence in several places because no single person should have been able to control it.

You may discover that some of the people you love made terrible choices. You may also discover that some of the people who hurt you were frightened, manipulated, or trying to protect someone else.

Do not confuse explanation with forgiveness.

You owe nobody a particular feeling.

You owe yourself the truth.

Grandpa

I folded the letter carefully.

For several seconds, neither Rebecca nor I spoke.

Then I asked the question I had been trying to avoid.

"Was I adopted?"

Rebecca's face remained composed, but I saw her fingers tighten around the edge of the table.

"I don't know."

"How can you not know? You handled his estate."

"Your grandfather left instructions concerning the property, but he did not give me the complete history of your birth. He said the original records would explain what he could not."

"Then we need to get them."

"Yes."

I placed the cassette tape on the table.

"What's this?"

"An old recording, I suspect."

The bank manager had provided a portable player for examining stored media, and Rebecca asked him to bring it into the room. When it arrived, I inserted the cassette and pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then Grandpa's voice emerged, thinner than I remembered but unmistakable.

"My name is Samuel Mercer. I am making this recording because I no longer trust my memory to hold every detail, and because there may come a time when the people involved deny what they did."

A chair scraped in the background.

Grandpa continued.

"On the night of October seventeenth, I received a telephone call from Margaret Vale. She told me there had been a mistake at Saint Agnes. Two children had been entered under the wrong names, and the mistake had been concealed after money changed hands."

I closed my eyes.

The recording continued, each word arriving with painful clarity.

"Margaret said she had tried to correct the records. She said Daniel threatened to expose her unless she signed a statement confirming the original entries. She was afraid of losing her job, and she was afraid for the children."

There was a long pause.

"When I went to the hospital, I found Daniel in the records office. He told me that everything had been handled legally. He said I should take the child I had been promised and leave the matter alone."

I opened my eyes.

The words were worse than the letter because they carried the sound of Grandpa's anger, restrained but unmistakable.

"I refused," he said. "I asked to see the original documents. Daniel told me that if I continued asking questions, I would lose the child entirely."

The tape crackled.

"I took Ellie home that night. I told myself I was protecting her. I told myself that if I could keep her safe, the rest could be corrected later."

His voice broke slightly.

"I was wrong about how much time I had."

The recording ended with a click.

I sat staring at the cassette player.

My grandfather had known there was a problem with my identity. He had known my father was involved. And he had carried that knowledge for years without telling me.

I wanted to be angry with him, but the anger wouldn't settle into a single shape. He had protected me, yet he had also allowed me to build my entire life around a history he knew might be false.

"Did he ever explain why he took you home?" Rebecca asked quietly.

"No."

I looked at the letter.

"He said he brought home a child. He didn't say whose child."

Rebecca nodded.

"Then we need the hospital records."

We left the bank shortly after ten and drove directly to the storage facility listed in the notebook. The facility stood behind a row of auto-repair shops, its metal buildings surrounded by a high fence. The office manager confirmed that unit 214 had been rented under the name Samuel Mercer for twenty-six years.

The account was still active.

Grandpa had paid the fees in advance.

The manager led us down a narrow corridor and unlocked the unit. Inside were several sealed plastic containers, a filing cabinet, and a wooden crate reinforced with metal straps.

The filing cabinet contained tax documents and property records. The containers held photographs, newspaper clippings, and correspondence from Saint Agnes Medical Center.

I found the blue ledger in the wooden crate.

Its cover was faded, but the color matched Grandpa's description. The pages contained hundreds of entries involving payments to hospital employees, transfers between private companies, and the purchase of property through intermediaries.

The name Daniel Mercer appeared repeatedly.

So did Margaret Vale.

But the ledger was not the only thing in the crate.

Beneath it lay a thick envelope labeled ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORDS.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Inside were copies of hospital forms, handwritten notes from nurses, and two documents that appeared to be birth certificates. Both carried dates from the same week. Both included the name of the same mother.

The first named a baby girl as Ellie Mercer.

The second named a baby girl as Eleanor Vale.

The signatures at the bottom were different.

I compared the dates, then the hospital identification numbers.

They were almost identical, except for the final two digits.

Someone had created two records for what appeared to be two different children.

My knees weakened.

Rebecca took the papers from me and examined them carefully.

"These are not enough to establish what happened," she said. "We need the hospital's archived register and an independent review of the records."

I barely heard her.

At the bottom of the envelope was a third document, folded into a narrow rectangle. It was a handwritten statement signed by Margaret Vale.

I unfolded it.

"I witnessed the exchange of the infants on October seventeenth. Daniel Mercer instructed me to alter the identification bracelets after the original records were entered. Samuel Mercer arrived later that night and took one of the children home. I was told that if I spoke about the matter, the other child would disappear."

Below the statement was a final line.

"I have lived with this for twenty-six years. I cannot live with it any longer."

A date followed, along with an address.

The address belonged to a small house on the outskirts of the same town where my mother had been born.

I stared at the handwriting.

Margaret Vale was alive when the statement was written.

And if the address was still valid, she might be the only person left who could tell me which child had been taken home that night.

I slipped the statement into its envelope.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed my mother's name.

I answered without speaking.

For several seconds, I heard only her breathing.

Then she said, "Ellie, you need to listen to me carefully. Your father knows where you've been, and he's on his way to the storage facility."

I turned toward the open unit.

At the far end of the corridor, a man's footsteps sounded against the concrete floor.

My mother whispered, "Whatever you found, don't let him take it."

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: My Father’s Footsteps Approached the Storage Unit, and My Mother Finally Admitted What She Had Been Hiding

I barely slept.
