I chose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One reporter asked whether I thought my father would have made the same choice.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he spent his life believing he had to hold everything together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you don&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that some things become stronger when you let them go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The quote appeared in newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Mom clipped one article.<\/p>\n<p>She framed it.<\/p>\n<p>I made fun of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re turning me into a motivational speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter than turning you into your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>One summer, we traveled together.<\/p>\n<p>Just Mom and me.<\/p>\n<p>No lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>No investigators.<\/p>\n<p>No foundation meetings.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in a small coastal town.<\/p>\n<p>We ate at restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Walked along the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgive you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t need you to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the difference.<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness wasn&#39;t surrender.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t forgetting.<\/p>\n<p>It was choosing not to let the past dictate every future conversation.<\/p>\n<p>We watched the sun disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us said anything else.<\/p>\n<p>When we returned home, I noticed something strange.<\/p>\n<p>The house felt smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had.<\/p>\n<p>The rooms no longer seemed filled with history.<\/p>\n<p>They were simply rooms.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen was where Mom made coffee.<\/p>\n<p>The living room was where we watched television.<\/p>\n<p>The study was where I wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The porch was where we sat.<\/p>\n<p>The backyard was where the maple tree grew.<\/p>\n<p>Home.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing less.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, I received a package from Edward.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small wooden box.<\/p>\n<p>There was a note.<\/p>\n<p>For the things that deserve keeping.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was the dried leaf from a maple tree.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the leaf inside my book.<\/p>\n<p>Not the manuscript.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The first notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The one where I had written what I wanted my life to become.<\/p>\n<p>It felt right.<\/p>\n<p>A leaf belonged with beginnings.<\/p>\n<p>One evening, I called Edward.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sent me a leaf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you like trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I thought you should have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sent it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;re even.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll make coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll bring breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t burn it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI make no promises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We laughed.<\/p>\n<p>After we ended the call, I realized something.<\/p>\n<p>I was no longer waiting for Edward to return.<\/p>\n<p>I was simply happy that he might.<\/p>\n<p>That was another form of freedom.<\/p>\n<p>The book eventually reached its final page.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote the last sentence slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t use the line I had used before.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted something new.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote:<\/p>\n<p>A life is not measured by what we inherit, but by what we are brave enough to choose after we have learned the truth.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t know what the future would bring.<\/p>\n<p>That was okay.<\/p>\n<p>The
