four days to uncover.

The foundation's investigators worked through the old trust records while Nora contacted the financial institutions involved.

Every path seemed to end in the same place.

A company called Northbridge Preservation Services.

The company had no visible employees.

No public office.

No obvious business activity.

It had been incorporated less than two months earlier.

The registered agent was a law firm in another state.

Nora contacted them.

They refused to disclose their client without a court order.

“That means someone wants to remain hidden,” I said.

“Or someone is protecting a legitimate client,” Nora replied.

“After everything I've been through, those words sound identical.”

She smiled.

“Fair.”

The next clue came from an old property certificate.

Northbridge had purchased a small parcel of land near the river.

The same river where Edward had disappeared twenty-seven years earlier.

I stared at the map.

“This can't be coincidence.”

Nora didn't disagree.

We contacted Edward.

He answered after two rings.

When I told him about Northbridge, he became silent.

“Edward?”

“I know the name.”

“How?”

“I've seen it before.”

“Where?”

“In one of your father's private files.”

My heart began beating faster.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because the company didn't exist when I gave you the file.”

“Then what was it?”

“A placeholder.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Your father sometimes created inactive entities before he knew how he would use them.”

“Northbridge was one of them?”

“Yes.”

“Who controlled it?”

Edward paused.

“That's what I never discovered.”

I looked at Nora.

She was listening carefully.

“Can you come back?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone is watching the old property.”

I felt a chill.

“How do you know?”

“I saw the same car twice.”

“Where?”

“Near the river.”

I looked at the map.

“The Northbridge property?”

“Yes.”

“Edward, are you safe?”

“I am.”

“Promise?”

He laughed quietly.

“You sound like your father.”

“I'll take that as a compliment.”

“You shouldn't.”

The line went dead.

That night, someone knocked on my door.

I froze.

My mother was upstairs.

Nora was in the study.

I checked the security monitor.

Nobody was visible.

Then the doorbell rang again.

Nora came into the hallway.

“Don't open it.”

“I wasn't going to.”

We watched.

A package sat on the porch.

There was no person nearby.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

They examined the package.

Nothing dangerous was inside.

Only a small key.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed the old river property.

On the back:

You inherited the house.

You did not inherit the truth.

Nora looked at me.

“The key?”

I turned it over.

A number was engraved on it.

17.

My breath caught.

Dad's old key.

The same number had appeared years earlier in the clues surrounding the warehouse.

But this key was different.

It was newer.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Where does it go?”

Nora contacted the property records.

The river building had a basement.

The original plans showed a maintenance room.

Room seventeen.

We went there the next morning with police officers.

The room was empty.

At first.

Then one officer noticed scratches around a cabinet.

We moved it.

Behind it was a narrow opening.

Inside was a small steel box.

The key fit.

The box contained a notebook.

Not Dad's.

Not Edward's.

Someone else had written it.

The first page contained a list of names.

People connected to the old network.

Some were familiar.

Others were not.

The final name stopped me.

Mark Hail.

Beside it was a date.

The date Mark had first contacted Samuel.

I turned the page.

There were notes about Mark's finances.

His employment.

His meetings with Diane.

His contact with Bell.

Someone had been tracking him before Dad changed the trust.

I looked at Nora.

“This was an investigation.”

“Yes.”

“Who was conducting it?”

We turned another page.

At the bottom was a name.

Samuel Green.

I stared.

“Samuel?”

Nora shook her head.

“He didn't tell me about this.”

The notebook revealed something even stranger.

Samuel had not been investigating Mark alone.

He had been working with someone identified only as E.H.

Edward Hail.

The notes went back six years.

That meant Edward had suspected Mark long before Dad died.

And Dad had known.

I felt angry.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

Nora answered quietly.

“Because everyone thought knowing would put you in danger.”

I looked at the pages.

“And did it?”

“Yes.”

She didn't soften the answer.

“Mark still betrayed you.”

I closed the notebook.

The truth was painful because it proved something I had been resisting.

The people around me had not been wrong about the danger.

They had been wrong about how much secrecy I could survive.

Then I found one final page.

It had been written recently.

Three weeks ago.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The note said:

The Bell network is gone.

The Hail network is not.

I read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Nora looked troubled.

“Your father had business interests outside the Bell operation.”

“I know.”

“No. I mean something else.”

She pointed to the next sentence.

Someone inherited more than property.

Someone inherited liability.

My stomach tightened.

“Me.”

She nodded.

The next line was worse.

If Clare learns what the preservation trust truly owns, she will become the target again.

I folded the page.

“We need to know what it owns.”

Nora looked at the property records.

“That could take weeks.”

“Then take weeks.”

She smiled.

“You really are your father's daughter.”

“No.”

I looked at the notebook.

“I’m finally becoming my own person.”

That afternoon, we searched the trust records.

There were properties I knew about.

Then there were properties I had never heard of.

Warehouses in three states.

Land parcels.

Old commercial buildings.

Mineral rights.

A small publishing company.

Two storage facilities.

And one private research center.

The combined value was significant.

But there was something more important.

The trust had liabilities.

Millions of dollars in unresolved claims.

I stared at the numbers.

“So I inherited debt too.”

Nora nodded.

“Potentially.”

I laughed.

“Of course.”

My mother looked worried.

“Can they take the house?”

“Not if the trust is separated properly,” Nora said.

“But if Clare owns everything?”

“Then she needs to restructure the trust immediately.”

I looked at the documents.

For years I had believed my inheritance was eight million dollars.

Then I discovered it was an empire.

Then evidence.

Now it appeared to be responsibility.

I understood why Dad had been afraid.

But I also understood why he had trusted me.

The next morning, I received another message.

No photograph this time.

Only words.

Your father left you one last property.

Find the house that was never sold.

I stared at the screen.

Nora read it.

“Another clue.”

“Another problem.”

“Probably both.”

I looked at the property list.

There was one address marked with no sale record.

No current owner.

No mortgage.

No tax payment.

Nothing.

The address was only a name.

Willow Creek.

I looked at my mother.

She went pale.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

She whispered the words.

“That was your grandmother's house.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: The House My Mother Thought Had Been Destroyed
