I remember him from Dad\u2019s photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz leaned closer to the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s older brother. Edward Hail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour uncle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad told me he died when I was little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA car accident. That\u2019s what I was told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel exchanged a glance with Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father\u2019s records tell a different story,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father maintained a private file concerning Edward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you ever tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Walter instructed me not to open it unless circumstances required it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCircumstances required it twenty years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently, he disagreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel unlocked a cabinet and removed a thin brown folder.<\/p>\n<p>The edges were worn, and the paper inside had yellowed with age.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Dad\u2019s handwriting on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>EDWARD \u2014 PRIVATE.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The first page was a newspaper clipping.<\/p>\n<p>Edward Hail had disappeared twenty-seven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>There was no confirmed body.<\/p>\n<p>No funeral.<\/p>\n<p>No death certificate.<\/p>\n<p>The article had described an abandoned vehicle found near a river outside town. Authorities had suspected an accident but had never recovered the driver.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Dad knew he wasn&#39;t dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot initially,\u201d Samuel said.<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>There were bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Property records.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw something that made my fingers stop.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph of Edward standing beside Richard Bell.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Dad had written one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>They were never as separate as they wanted us to believe.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa read it over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz took the photograph carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we should find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pulled out another document.<\/p>\n<p>It was an old corporate ledger from Hail Mechanical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father suspected Edward and Bell had been working together before the money disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the figures.<\/p>\n<p>The same pattern appeared repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Money left Hail Mechanical.<\/p>\n<p>It passed through shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>Then it disappeared into accounts connected to Bell.<\/p>\n<p>But there was something else.<\/p>\n<p>Several transfers had been authorized using Edward&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Edward have stolen the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father never proved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did he suspect him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Edward vanished at exactly the wrong time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>There was a handwritten note from Dad.<\/p>\n<p>If Edward returns, do not trust the story he tells.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad expected him to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at the airport photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently, now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz took the image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to know who the fourth man is before we assume anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s Edward,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we verify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She left the room with the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother knew all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew Edward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used to talk about your family before I married Mark. She always said your father destroyed people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusiness partners. Employees. Anyone who crossed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ever mention Edward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Edward wasn&#39;t dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago. I was a teenager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I thought she was talking nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother has been lying for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo has my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>It was Mark.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>He was calling from an unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you with the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn&#39;t have gone to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied about your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou created a company without me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did it because I was trying to protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou moved money using my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then he whispered, \u201cYou don&#39;t understand what your father did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Samuel about the Black Ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s the Black Ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mark say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated the name.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat file was supposed to have been destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDestroyed by whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence of payments made to people who could make problems disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople like Richard Bell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached for the old file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one place your father may have hidden it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old warehouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse had been closed for nearly fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had kept the property because he refused to sell anything connected to the original company.<\/p>\n<p>We drove there before sunset.<\/p>\n<p>The building smelled of rust, dust, and old oil.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel unlocked the main door.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, rows of abandoned machinery sat beneath gray tarps.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered coming there as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had once lifted me onto a workbench and shown me how to identify different tools.<\/p>\n<p>The memory hurt.<\/p>\n<p>We searched the office first.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel stopped beside a filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father always kept sensitive documents where nobody would think to look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I knelt.<\/p>\n<p>One of the tiles sounded hollow.<\/p>\n<p>We lifted it.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it was a metal box.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a black ledger.<\/p>\n<p>No label.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Just pages filled with dates, initials, account numbers, and amounts.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to the first page.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest entry was twenty-nine years old.<\/p>\n<p>The latest was only eleven days old.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had continued using the ledger long after Dad stopped working.<\/p>\n<p>And beside the newest entry were two initials.<\/p>\n<p>M.H.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Hail.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s been using Dad&#39;s ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese aren&#39;t Mark&#39;s initials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked closer.<\/p>\n<p>The letters had been written in Dad&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>M.H.<\/p>\n<p>But the account number beside them belonged to Mark&#39;s company.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been using Dad&#39;s records to track Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Or Mark had been using them to track someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found my own name.<\/p>\n<p>CLARE.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it was a date.<\/p>\n<p>The date my father had changed his will.<\/p>\n<p>And beside that:<\/p>\n<p>PROTECTION ACTIVATED.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>The next entry read:<\/p>\n<p>IF CLARE DISCOVERS THE TRANSFERS, SHOW HER THE SAFE-DEPOSIT RECORD.<\/p>\n<p>My heart pounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came around the table.<\/p>\n<p>I showed him the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe-deposit record?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father had another box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from the warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Metal scraping against concrete.<\/p>\n<p>We both froze.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>The sound came again.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was inside.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel motioned for me to stay behind him.<\/p>\n<p>A shadow moved across the office doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man stepped into the light.<\/p>\n<p>He was older than the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>His hair was gray.<\/p>\n<p>His face was thinner.<\/p>\n<p>But I knew him.<\/p>\n<p>Edward Hail looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have your father&#39;s ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t speak.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re supposed to be dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edward smiled without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what Walter needed everyone to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you kill my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you help Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why were you on that plane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edward looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Mark is about to do something your father spent twenty-seven years trying to prevent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edward&#39;s eyes moved to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s going after the last account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one that contains the original money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took a
