Melissa. My purse was in a side room during the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark see you put the unsigned agreement inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained that the existence of the forged version meant someone had obtained the original and created a false copy.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel opened the email Mark had sent.<\/p>\n<p>The message claimed I had signed the document before the funeral and was too overwhelmed by grief to handle the remaining details.<\/p>\n<p>Nora read the final sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t trouble Clare with additional calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to prevent anyone from contacting you directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do we do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe let him believe the forgery worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora drafted an email requesting that Mark bring the original agreement and the complete company records to Samuel&#39;s office.<\/p>\n<p>Mark responded within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>He agreed.<\/p>\n<p>I drove home afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Mark was sitting on the sofa when I entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed to drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel emailed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my face neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants the company records Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s quick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you everything would work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat opposite him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly does MDC Family Holdings own?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and I will own it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty-fifty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Diane and Melissa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re family. I may give them small interests later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>The company records said otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel has it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave it to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tiny hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>Then he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night, after Mark fell asleep, I went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>The folder containing our tax documents was missing.<\/p>\n<p>So were copies of my driver&#39;s license and passport.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the safe.<\/p>\n<p>My passport was still there.<\/p>\n<p>But it had been moved.<\/p>\n<p>I opened Mark&#39;s old briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were the house listings for Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa&#39;s business proposal.<\/p>\n<p>A brochure for a retirement community in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>And a document titled DISTRIBUTION PLAN.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed every page.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mark&#39;s calculations, the inheritance would be divided between his retirement, investments controlled by MDC, Diane&#39;s house, and Melissa&#39;s business.<\/p>\n<p>I was assigned a monthly allowance.<\/p>\n<p>Two thousand five hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the number.<\/p>\n<p>My own inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>My own money.<\/p>\n<p>And Mark had already decided how much I would be allowed to spend.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the briefcase was an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter from Mark&#39;s former employer.<\/p>\n<p>It was dated seven weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He had not quit his job after Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>He had been fired.<\/p>\n<p>The reason was an internal investigation involving unauthorized expenses and falsified vendor invoices.<\/p>\n<p>I read the letter twice.<\/p>\n<p>For seven weeks, Mark had kissed me goodbye each morning and pretended to go to work.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly he had an explanation for why he was unemployed.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the floorboard creak.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood at the bottom of the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn&#39;t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you decided to search my things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was looking for the funeral receipt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my briefcase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you might have put it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, you don&#39;t need to search through my things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His phone rang upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s probably my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt two in the morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Then I photographed the termination letter one more time and sent everything to Nora.<\/p>\n<p>Her reply came almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Leave the house.<\/p>\n<p>Now.<\/p>\n<p>I packed a small bag.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could leave, someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>It was Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>She looked over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Mark here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stepped inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made me sign papers at the hospital the night your father died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought they were business documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know. He kept telling me you already agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he&#39;s my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because I believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa took out her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found messages between Mark and Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She showed me a family group conversation.<\/p>\n<p>I read the messages.<\/p>\n<p>They had discussed forming MDC before Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had written that Walter would not last much longer.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa had asked whether I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had answered that I would agree once everything was done.<\/p>\n<p>Then Diane asked what would happen if Samuel caused problems.<\/p>\n<p>Mark replied that he knew how I signed my name.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me go numb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t understand what he meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he was planning something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you telling me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he lied to me too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The front door suddenly rattled.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa froze.<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s voice came from outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us answered.<\/p>\n<p>The handle moved again.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Melissa is in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe followed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the back door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we leave that way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We slipped outside through the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>I did not look back.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Samuel had arranged for me and Melissa to wait in a private room beside his conference room.<\/p>\n<p>At ten, Mark arrived with Diane.<\/p>\n<p>He carried a leather folder.<\/p>\n<p>Diane carried the corporate records.<\/p>\n<p>They believed they were walking into a meeting where they would finalize the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Samuel asked them one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho witnessed Clare sign the agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched her sign it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beside me, Melissa covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd who owns MDC Family Holdings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI own fifty percent,\u201d Mark said. \u201cMy mother and sister own the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Clare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe becomes an owner after the transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does your agreement assign fifty percent of her inheritance to a company she does not own?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped into the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me we owned it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned.<\/p>\n<p>His face emptied of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed your agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa entered behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to me too, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Nora placed the forged document on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signature will be examined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t need the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened his folder.<\/p>\n<p>He removed another document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA debt will accomplish the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed a promissory note on the table.<\/p>\n<p>It claimed that my father owed Mark one million eight hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the night Walter died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad never signed that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel&#39;s voice became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter was unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Nora turned the final page.<\/p>\n<p>There were three witness signatures.<\/p>\n<p>One belonged to Diane.<\/p>\n<p>One belonged to Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>The third belonged to a hospital nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Mark smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;ll confirm it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference-room door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A woman in blue scrubs stood there.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>She had been one of the nurses caring for Dad during his final hours.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>Fear was written plainly across her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse
