You say the right words, the other person forgives you, and everyone can move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut some damage doesn&#39;t work that way,\u201d Eleanor continued. \u201cSome things must remain damaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily folded her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know if I can forgive everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may never understand why you did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding can become another excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily felt something loosen inside her.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Something else.<\/p>\n<p>Permission.<\/p>\n<p>Permission not to solve Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Not to redeem her.<\/p>\n<p>Not to carry her guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas believed money could make people safe. Rebecca believed disappearance could save you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you believed the truth would destroy you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the truth didn&#39;t destroy you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gave you a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked down.<\/p>\n<p>That was exactly what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>The truth had taken almost everything familiar from her.<\/p>\n<p>But it had also given her the first real choice of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor reached toward the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed Emily a small envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Emily recognized the handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething he wrote before the first trust was established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was not another financial instruction.<\/p>\n<p>It was a letter addressed simply to \u201cWhoever finally finds the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas wrote that he hoped the person reading it would understand one thing: inheritance was not ownership. Blood was not loyalty.
