My grandfather offered him money to remain silent.

He accepted once.

Then again.

Then he realized he had become part of the machine he wanted to expose.

“I spent years trying to undo what I did.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

Everyone seemed to know that sentence.

I should have told you.

I should have protected you.

I should have done better.

None of it gave me back the years they had taken.

Detective Grant turned another page.

Then stopped.

A series of payments had been made to someone identified only as R.W.

Robert Wilson.

Robert looked away.

“I took money.”

“You stole from the trust.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Less than your mother.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“Three hundred thousand.”

I stared at him.

“Did you repay it?”

“Most of it.”

“Most?”

“I used the rest to fund Rebecca's disappearance.”

Rebecca spoke quietly.

“He saved my life.”

“And lied to me.”

“Yes.”

I looked at all three of them.

My mother.

My supposed father.

My biological father.

My biological mother.

Four people who had each hidden different pieces of my life.

I suddenly understood why every truth had arrived attached to another lie.

No one in my family had possessed the whole story.

They had all been protecting different pieces of themselves.

Detective Grant turned to the final pages.

“These payments stop six months ago.”

Robert nodded.

“That was when they realized Emily was about to gain control of the trust.”

“Who are they?”

Robert pointed to a company name.

Northstar Development Group.

It appeared repeatedly.

The company had purchased properties connected to my grandfather.

Then another name appeared.

Nathan Vale.

I recognized him.

He was the bank executive who had approved several of my investment accounts.

He had also signed the original trust administration documents.

“He's the person who opened the account when I was nineteen.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“And he worked with Mom?”

“Not exactly.”

Robert shook his head.

“He worked above her.”

A chill went through me.

Nathan Vale wasn't a relative.

He wasn't supposed to care about my inheritance.

Yet he had access to every account.

Every trust document.

Every signature.

Every transaction.

He had been positioned at the bank for years.

Detective Grant called her department again.

This time someone answered.

She demanded an immediate warrant for Nathan Vale.

The response was delayed.

Then the voice said something that made her face go pale.

“The warrant cannot be processed.”

“Why?”

“Because the request has been blocked by federal review.”

Detective Grant looked at Robert.

“Federal review?”

Robert nodded.

“They've been protected for years.”

I stared at the ledger.

“How do we stop them?”

Rebecca answered.

“We don't.”

She closed the book.

“We expose them.”

The plan was simple in theory.

The ledger needed to be authenticated.

The recordings needed to be preserved.

The original trust documents needed to be copied.

Then everything had to be delivered simultaneously to multiple federal agencies, journalists, and independent attorneys.

If one person disappeared, the evidence would survive elsewhere.

But there was one problem.

The original ledger was still needed to prove the chain of ownership.

And it was currently in the hands of someone who had escaped the police station.

My mother.

Detective Grant looked at me.

“Your mother has the original trust certificate.”

“How do we find her?”

Robert answered.

“She'll find Emily.”

“Why?”

“Because Linda believes Emily is the only person who can unlock the final account.”

He explained that the trust required my biometric confirmation.

A fingerprint.

A voice recording.

And a blood sample.

My grandfather had designed the final release that way.

“If she wants the money,” Robert said, “she needs you.”

I felt sick.

“So she kidnapped me?”

“Not yet.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“She'll try to convince you to go willingly.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL TRUST CERTIFICATE.

A second message followed.

COME TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE YOU WERE BORN.

ALONE.

I looked at Rebecca.

“She knows.”

Rebecca nodded.

“She always knows.”

Detective Grant told me not to go.

I agreed.

But another message arrived.

IF YOU DON'T COME, ROBERT DIES.

I looked toward him.

He was standing beside the greenhouse door.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“She's not bluffing.”

“What happened?”

He turned the phone toward us.

A live video showed my father tied to a chair in a dark room.

Behind him stood my mother.

She held the original trust certificate.

“You have one hour,” she said through the phone.

“Come alone, Emily.”

Detective Grant immediately ordered officers to trace the signal.

It was moving.

The location changed every few seconds.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

“She isn't at the hospital.”

“Then where?”

Rebecca whispered the answer.

“The old maternity clinic.”

The clinic had closed fifteen years earlier.

It was located beside the cemetery where my grandfather had been buried.

Detective Grant organized a response team.

Marcus stopped her.

“If you rush in, she will destroy the certificate.”

“She has Robert.”

“She wants Emily.”

“I know.”

“She won't hurt Emily.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“You don't know that.”

Marcus looked at me.

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because Linda spent thirty-three years protecting the illusion that she was your mother.”

He swallowed.

“She won't destroy the person who makes that lie believable.”

The words chilled me.

The police vehicles moved toward the abandoned clinic.

I sat in the back seat beside Detective Grant.

Rebecca was in another vehicle.

Marcus followed behind.

The closer we came, the more familiar the streets became.

I remembered visiting the clinic as a child.

Mom had once driven me past it.

She told me the building had been where she and Dad had received bad news about a pregnancy before me.

It had never occurred to me that the story was false.

We reached the clinic.

The building stood dark against the night.

A single light burned upstairs.

Detective Grant raised her hand.

Everyone stopped.

A voice came from the entrance.

“Emily.”

My mother's voice.

“Come inside.”

I stepped forward.

Detective Grant grabbed my arm.

“No.”

I looked at the dark doorway.

Then I saw someone standing behind my mother.

Robert.

He was free.

His hands were not tied.

My mother had lied again.

She stepped aside.

And another person appeared.

Nathan Vale.

He was holding the original trust certificate.

He looked directly at me.

“Your family has told you many stories tonight,” he said.

Then he smiled.

“I’m here to tell you the one they left out.”

He lifted the certificate.

“Your grandfather didn't leave you the fortune.”

He looked at Rebecca.

“He left you the debt.”

Rebecca went pale.

Nathan opened the document.

“The trust was created to transfer liability for every illegal transaction in the family network to the person who eventually claimed the assets.”

He looked at me.

“If you accept the inheritance, you inherit the crimes.”

The room fell silent.

Detective Grant stepped forward.

“You're under arrest.”

Nathan laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He pointed at the ledger.

“The crimes have already been transferred.”

I stared at him.

“How?”

He held up another document.

A transfer bearing my signature.

Dated two days before the wedding.

My name appeared at the bottom.

The document declared that I had accepted the entire Wilson family estate.

And beneath it was a clause I had never seen.

All liabilities.

All debts.

All criminal obligations.

Transferred to Emily Wilson.

My mother smiled.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Marcus whispered, “It's a trap.”

Nathan folded the document.

“It was always a trap.”

Then the lights in the clinic went out.

A gunshot cracked somewhere upstairs.

Robert dropped to the floor.

Rebecca screamed.

And when the emergency lights flickered on, Nathan Vale was gone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Gunshot Was Meant to
