I had spent thirty-three years believing Robert Wilson was my father. Yet the face in the photograph carried a familiarity that made my stomach twist. Detective Grant reached for the picture, then stopped when her radio crackled with another urgent message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s gone,\u201d an officer shouted from the corridor. \u201cThe suspect is no longer inside the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had escaped from a police station.<\/p>\n<p>That fact should have been impossible, but the next few minutes proved otherwise. Two officers had been responding to the power failure when someone triggered the fire alarm on the opposite side of the building. The emergency doors unlocked automatically. During the confusion, Mom had apparently walked through a service corridor wearing a borrowed police jacket. One camera caught her entering an elevator. Another showed her leaving through the underground garage. By the time anyone realized what had happened, she was already gone.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant picked up the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know this man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the face again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never seen him before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you recognized him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognized him because I&#39;ve seen him today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, she said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked me for Marcus Hale&#39;s full name.<\/p>\n<p>I gave it to her.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant pulled up his employment record. He looked at me, and something in his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Detective Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered when you&#39;d find that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re the man in the picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t deny it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Marcus Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat down slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy birth name is Daniel Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a strange pressure in my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca&#39;s surname before marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you claiming to be Emily&#39;s biological father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became unbearably quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I waited for the denial, the correction, anything that would restore the world I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew who I was before you called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about my account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about my inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched the transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was assigned to investigate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were already investigating me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was investigating the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Rebecca?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe contacted me months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she believed your mother was watching every person who got close to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo everyone knew except me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert knew part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what exactly was I supposed to know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat your life had been built around a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant told me to sit.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus opened his folder.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were copies of documents dating back more than thirty years.<\/p>\n<p>The first was a hospital birth record.<\/p>\n<p>My name was there.<\/p>\n<p>The mother&#39;s name was Rebecca Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The father&#39;s name was Daniel Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>My birth date matched.<\/p>\n<p>My birthplace matched.<\/p>\n<p>Everything matched.<\/p>\n<p>Except the version of my life I had been taught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Rebecca give me to Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was forced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Rebecca had been twenty-one when she became pregnant. Her father, my grandfather, considered her irresponsible and believed the family reputation would collapse if the pregnancy became public. Robert, Rebecca&#39;s younger brother, had already begun working with the family businesses. My mother, Linda Wilson, was not yet married to him. She had entered the family as an employee and later became closely involved in its financial operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe offered to raise you temporarily,\u201d Marcus said. \u201cYour mother promised Rebecca she would return you when she was stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she never did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word seemed to explain my entire childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said my grandfather created a trust for me because he feared the family would fight over his estate. Rebecca was named as one beneficiary. I was the other. The trust was designed to protect me until I was old enough to control it.<\/p>\n<p>Linda discovered the trust.<\/p>\n<p>She realized that if Rebecca regained custody of me, she would lose access to both the child and the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she married Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd convinced him I was his daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert knew you weren&#39;t biologically his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>That revelation hurt differently.<\/p>\n<p>He had known.<\/p>\n<p>Every birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Every school ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Every Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>He had known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did he pretend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was afraid of Linda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant asked whether Robert had participated willingly in the fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitially, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater he tried to undo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explained the black case.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden trust.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca&#39;s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>But it did not explain my mother&#39;s escape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did she go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has somewhere your father never knew about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant received another message.<\/p>\n<p>A patrol officer had found Linda&#39;s abandoned vehicle two miles from the station.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a phone.<\/p>\n<p>On the screen was a message addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE THE ORIGINAL RECORDS.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then another message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>COME TO THE OLD HOUSE ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY REBECCA GAVE YOU UP.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant immediately told me not to respond.<\/p>\n<p>I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s going to the old house,\u201d Rebecca said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father&#39;s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Greenwich property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. The original house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew the address.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather&#39;s old home had been sold years ago and converted into offices. I had visited it only once as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother thinks the original ledger is still there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one that proves where the trust money went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does she need it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the ledger also proves why your grandfather changed his will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he discover?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca&#39;s voice became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Linda wasn&#39;t the only person stealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Detective Grant said. \u201cYou stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;ll go alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your mother wants the ledger. And Rebecca wants you alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant began organizing officers.<\/p>\n<p>Before we left, she asked Marcus one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you let Emily believe you were just a bank investigator?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wasn&#39;t sure whether I was protecting her from Linda or protecting Linda from what Rebecca was about to reveal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus reached into his folder and removed one final photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Rebecca, my mother, Robert, and my grandfather standing together outside the old house.<\/p>\n<p>A little girl stood between Rebecca and Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>Written on the back in my grandfather&#39;s handwriting were six words.<\/p>\n<p>The child knows nothing.
