But first you need to hear the recording your mother tried to destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A file appeared in my email.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant connected my phone to her computer.<\/p>\n<p>The recording began with my grandfather&#39;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded weak.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca was speaking beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom entered the room.<\/p>\n<p>Grandfather accused her of stealing from one of his companies.<\/p>\n<p>Mom threatened to keep him from seeing me if he reported her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no right to use Emily against me,\u201d Grandpa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am her mother,\u201d Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are the woman who agreed to raise her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>On the recording, Mom demanded that he stop.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily belongs with Rebecca. You promised this arrangement would only be temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant placed a hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time Rebecca didn&#39;t hide her number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeet me at the hospital where you were born,\u201d she said. \u201cBring the detective if you need to.
