Do not allow anyone else to access your phone, laptop, or banking records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked through the glass doors and onto the terrace.<\/p>\n<p>The ocean wind hit my face.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the glass, my family stood frozen.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding decorations looked absurd now. White roses. Gold ribbons. Crystal glasses. Everything designed to suggest prosperity while my account had nearly been emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Marcus Hale,\u201d the representative said. \u201cI&#39;m a senior fraud specialist. I need to explain what we&#39;ve found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat at a small table.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus asked me to confirm the account from which the money had been taken.<\/p>\n<p>I gave him the last four digits.<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the joint account your mother opened for you when you were eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is your capital reserve account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you are the sole owner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus explained that an old family profile had remained linked to my online banking dashboard after a system migration several years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had been able to see information she should never have had access to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she couldn&#39;t transfer the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe should not have been able to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what we&#39;re investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared through the glass.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was talking rapidly to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson paced behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe stood apart from everyone, still wearing her wedding dress and staring at her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus,\u201d I said, \u201cwhat document was used?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA gift letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the signature appears to have been reproduced from another document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus asked whether I had recently provided anyone with a signed contract.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the catering agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed something for my mother three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have a copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my laptop and found the scanned contract.<\/p>\n<p>I forwarded it.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThe signature on your catering agreement and the signature on the gift letter are identical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdentical?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is something investigators can establish formally. For now, I can tell you that the documents appear to have been generated from the same signature image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my mother through the glass.<\/p>\n<p>She knew.<\/p>\n<p>I walked back inside.<\/p>\n<p>She rushed toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou copied my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>No sound came out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took my signed contract and used my signature to authorize a $960,000 gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn&#39;t a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the closing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you planned to tell me after spending my money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson stepped onto the terrace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seller gave us forty-eight hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose money was the deposit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much of my money have you already spent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson finally answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred thousand from my account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe appeared in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the deposit came from your company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said investors bought your shares.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told my parents you paid cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>She slowly removed the matching gold watch she and Jackson had worn during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she pay for this too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe placed the watch on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Mom reached for me.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, Jackson needed stability. He&#39;s married now. available?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exactly what you said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad came outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA $960,000 mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can repay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as Jackson&#39;s business becomes profitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward my brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told them your company was about to receive funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re in discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy partners handle that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName one investor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>That silence told me more than any explanation.<\/p>\n<p>I had reviewed enough financial reports in my professional life to recognize the signs of a company surviving on promises.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson wasn&#39;t waiting for a funding round.<\/p>\n<p>He was waiting for another person to rescue him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus remained on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll file the fraud affidavit,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn&#39;t me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus sent the affidavit while we stood there.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a question asking whether I wished to pursue criminal charges against whoever had authorized the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I checked yes.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson slammed his hand against the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou selfish little\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinish that sentence,\u201d Khloe said.<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She was crying now.<\/p>\n<p>But her voice was steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Emily offered to buy us the house as a wedding present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t even know about the house,\u201d Khloe whispered.<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe removed her wedding ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve been married for less than a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Mom followed her.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson remained motionless.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my laptop.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, the villa no longer looked luxurious.<\/p>\n<p>The flowers were beginning disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>I drove to the nearest police station carrying my laptop, the banking records, and the original catering agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Sofia Grant listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, she studied the transaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn&#39;t impulsive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe receiving company was company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It&#39;s the company purchasing the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Jackson and Khloe were buying the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey aren&#39;t listed as the buyers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant turned her monitor toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Willow Crest Holdings was registered in Delaware.<\/p>\n<p>The public records revealed almost nothing.<\/p>\n<p>But the escrow file contained a confidential ownership declaration.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a signature.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>My father&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad controls the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe appears to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Grant opened another document.<\/p>\n<p>It claimed I had approved the purchase as an investment partner.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared beneath a copied signature.<\/p>\n<p>The supposed meeting had taken place six weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I knew exactly where I had been.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>I had been leading an audit.<\/p>\n<p>My passport records could prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Grant pointed to the notary&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>It belonged to my father&#39;s oldest friend.<\/p>\n<p>The same man who had raised a glass at the wedding and called our family a perfect example of trust.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could speak, her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call and looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers have arrived at the villa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour parents are gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey left their phones, luggage, and car behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the report again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne witness saw your father carrying a black document case toward the marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew that case.<\/p>\n<p>It had been locked in his office for years.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I asked what it contained, he always said old family records.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Grant opened another alert.<\/p>\n<p>A second transfer had been attempted.<\/p>\n<p>Two point four million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>This time the money was being pulled from an account I had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>An account opened in my name when I was
