It was the silence on my phone. I had been standing beneath the white tent outside the villa, watching my brother dance with his new wife, when my banking app refused to load. I tried again. Then a third time. When the screen finally refreshed, the number beside my available balance made me think I had opened the wrong account.

It showed less than three thousand dollars.

I stared at it until the figures blurred. My savings account had held considerably more than that when I woke up that morning. My reserve account was supposed to be untouched. I had built it over eleven years, adding bonuses, investment gains, and whatever remained after rent and ordinary expenses. It was the account I never discussed at family dinners because I had learned that financial privacy was treated as an insult in my family.

I refreshed the screen again. The number remained.

Behind me, applause rose as Jackson dipped Khloe backward beneath the lights. Everyone cheered. My mother stood near the dance floor, smiling with one hand pressed against her chest. My father was laughing beside her. Jackson looked exhausted but triumphant, exactly as a groom should look after months of planning.

I looked at the transaction history.

There it was.

A transfer for $960,000.

I stopped breathing for a second.

The receiving account belonged to an escrow service. The description mentioned a property purchase, but I had never agreed to buy a property. I had never even seen the contract.

I walked away from the dance floor and called my mother. She answered immediately, as though she had been waiting for me.

“Emily?”

“Mom, did you transfer money from my account?”

There was a pause.

Not a confused pause.

A careful one.

Then she said, “You’re looking at it already?”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“You’re still young,” she replied quietly. “You’ll earn it back.”

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The music continued behind me. Someone shouted Jackson’s name. Glasses clinked. A photographer called for the newlyweds to turn toward the camera.

I stared at the screen.

“Mom, where did my money go?”

“It went toward something important.”

“What?”

“Your brother’s future.”

I closed my eyes.

I had spent years helping Jackson whenever he asked. I had worked weekends when my friends traveled. I had bought my first apartment without asking my parents for a down payment. I had spent years saying no to things I wanted because I wanted security more.

And now the reward for being careful was apparently becoming the family emergency fund.

I called my bank.

A representative answered after several rings. Then he asked whether I had recently signed any financial documents.

That question made me think of the wedding.

Three weeks earlier, Mom had brought me a stack of vendor paperwork. She said Jackson was overwhelmed and needed someone responsible to sign a revised catering agreement.
