know.”

“Where is Anna?”

“She is alive.”

My heart began racing.

“Where?”

“You need to understand why Thomas hid her.”

“Tell me.”

“He didn't hide her because he didn't love her.”

“Then why?”

“Because the people around him knew she existed.”

“Who?”

“Richard.”

I froze.

“Richard knew?”

“Yes.”

“Charles?”

“Yes.”

“Martin?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Anna was connected to the original ownership structure.”

I didn't understand.

Eleanor explained.

Before Graham was born, Thomas had created a preliminary trust.

Anna was the first named beneficiary.

Then she was adopted.

The trust was modified.

But Thomas never removed her completely.

Instead, he created a protected interest.

A small percentage of the legacy remained tied to her identity.

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he believed she might return someday.”

I looked at the photograph.

“Did he know where she was?”

“For a while.”

“Then?”

“She that?”

Eleanor was silent.

Then she said:

“Martin.”

I closed my eyes.

The same man.

The same network.

The same secrets.

Martin had not merely manipulated the trust.

He had been involved in my daughter's disappearance from my life.

“Where is she now?”

“I don't know.”

“You said she was alive.”

“She was when Thomas last located her.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“Why didn't Thomas tell me?”

“Because he believed finding her would put her in danger.”

I looked at the photograph.

“Did he ever try?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He hired Daniel.”

I looked toward the window.

Daniel.

Of course.

I called him.

He arrived within an hour.

When I showed him the photograph, his face changed.

“I know her.”

I stared.

“You know Anna?”

“I've seen her.”

“When?”

“During one of Thomas's investigations.”

“Where?”

“California.”

My heart nearly stopped.

“Where?”

“A shelter.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Thomas ordered me not to.”

I couldn't speak.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“He said if you knew, you'd search for her.”

“I would have.”

“Yes.”

“And that would have put her in danger.”

“Yes.”

I hated him for that.

Then I understood why he had obeyed.

“What was she like?”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“She had your eyes.”

I looked away.

That was almost unbearable.

He continued.

“She was twenty-nine when I found her.”

“Did she know who she was?”

“No.”

“Did she know about Thomas?”

“No.”

“Then how did you find her?”

“Through records.”

“Where is she now?”

“I don't know.”

The search began again.

This time, it was personal.

We traced adoption records.

Foster records.

Employment records.

Old addresses.

Everything Thomas had hidden became evidence.

Three weeks later, we found a name.

Anna Reed.

Age forty-eight.

Teacher.

Lives in Oregon.

Married.

Two children.

My hands shook when I saw the photograph.

She looked like Thomas.

But the eyes were mine.

Graham stood beside me.

“She's your sister.”

He smiled.

“I'm going to have a sister.”

I laughed through tears.

“Apparently.”

He hugged me.

For the first time, the family Thomas had built in secret began coming back into the light.

I called Anna.

She answered.

“Hello?”

My voice failed.

I tried again.

“My name is Evelyn Mercer.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“I know.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“I've known for years.”

“Who told you?”

“Thomas.”

I closed my eyes.

“He found you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“When I was twenty-nine.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He said you were happy.”

I laughed sadly.

“Was I?”

“He thought you were.”

I swallowed.

“What did he tell you?”

“That he loved you.”

“And me?”

“He said you loved him.”

My eyes filled.

“He wanted me to meet you.”

“Why didn't you?”

“I was afraid.”

I understood.

Again.

Fear.

It had shaped all of our lives.

I asked:

“Would you meet me now?”

There was a long silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

I looked at Graham.

He was crying.

So was I.

Anna gave me an address.

She would come to Wilmington in two weeks.

For the first time in decades, I knew what I was waiting for.

Not money.

Not documents.

Not another
