Graham stood near the staircase with his arms folded, watching everything as if he were afraid that one wrong movement might make the entire truth disappear.

Paige sat in the living room.

She had stopped crying.

That worried me more.

A person who cried could still release something.

Paige simply stared at the floor.

Daniel remained near the window, speaking quietly with one of the detectives.

I held Thomas's final letter.

The last sentence stayed in my mind.

Choose the life you would have chosen before you were afraid.

I had spent years making decisions because I was afraid.

Afraid of being alone.

Afraid of disappointing Graham.

Afraid of causing conflict.

Afraid of losing the little place I still had inside my son's family.

And now Ruth was missing.

Fear had followed me into the one place where I thought I had finally escaped it.

I looked at the detective.

“What do we know?”

He shook his head.

“Not enough yet.”

“Martin said Ruth was safe.”

“That doesn't mean we know where she is.”

“Charles said she was safe.”

“We're treating that statement cautiously.”

I understood.

A criminal's promise was not evidence.

Daniel came over.

“There is something we haven't checked.”

“What?”

“The seventeenth property.”

“We already searched it.”

“The property itself.”

I looked at him.

“What did we miss?”

“The records room wasn't the only structure on the site.”

He unfolded a map.

Behind the main building was a small warehouse.

It had not been included in the original search because the structure appeared abandoned.

“Why would Ruth be there?”

“She may not be.”

“Then why go?”

“Because Charles's records point there.”

The detective looked at the map.

“We'll get a warrant.”

“We don't have time,” I said.

“You do not go anywhere without us.”

I nodded.

This time, I wasn't going to argue.

The warehouse stood behind the building beside an overgrown service road.

Its metal doors were rusted.

One had been forced open recently.

Daniel pointed toward the ground.

Fresh tire tracks.

A police officer photographed them.

Inside, the air smelled of damp concrete.

The first room was empty.

The second held broken furniture.

The third contained a narrow staircase.

We went down.

At the bottom was a corridor.

There were three doors.

The first was empty.

The second held boxes.

The third was locked.

Daniel tried the handle.

Nothing.

I remembered the key.

The brass key stamped 17.

I handed it to him.

It turned.

The door opened.

A single chair sat in the middle of the room.

Ruth's scarf was draped over it.

I knew it immediately.

It was the blue scarf I had given her for Christmas three years earlier.

I picked it up.

It was warm.

I froze.

“Someone was here recently.”

The detective examined the chair.

“Very recently.”

A sound came from behind the wall.

Three knocks.

Everyone stopped.

Then three more.

“Ruth?”

Silence.

Daniel pressed his ear to the wall.

Another knock.

He found a concealed panel.

Behind it was a narrow room.

Ruth was sitting on the floor.

Her wrists were tied, but she was conscious.

I rushed toward her.

The officer stopped me long enough to check the room.

Then he cut the restraints.

Ruth looked at me.

“I knew you'd come.”

I knelt beside her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

She touched my face.

“I was so afraid they would find you.”

I hugged her.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, “It wasn't Charles.”

I pulled back.

“What?”

“Charles didn't take me.”

“Who did?”

Ruth looked toward Daniel.

“He did.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel's face went still.

“What?”

Ruth shook her head.

“Not Daniel.”

She pointed toward the doorway.

“The man who was with Charles.”

I looked at the detective.

“Who?”

Ruth swallowed.

“I don't know.”

She closed her eyes.

“He wore a dark coat.”

“That doesn't narrow it down.”

“He smelled like cedar.”

I stared.

“Anything else?”

“He had a ring.”

“What kind?”

“Silver.”

“Any mark?”

She thought.

“A square.”

Daniel looked at me.

“The trustee seal.”

I felt a chill.

“What trustee?”

“The original trust office,” Daniel said.

“There was a seal on the old documents.”

“Where?”

“Martin had it.”

We all went silent.

Martin.

But Martin was already in custody.

Unless someone else had access.

Ruth grabbed my hand.

“There was another person.”

“Who?”

“A woman.”

“What woman?”

“I couldn't see her face.”

“Did she speak?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Ruth's expression changed.

“She said, ‘Evelyn will understand when she sees the second ledger.’”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Second ledger?”

Ruth nodded.

“She said Thomas hid it somewhere only you would recognize.”

I thought about the house.

The warehouse.

The seventeenth property.

The painting.

The hidden compartment.

Everything Thomas had left seemed designed like a trail.

But there was something else.

Something ordinary.

Something I had ignored.

I looked at Ruth.

“Did she say anything about where?”

“She said one word.”

“What word?”

“Home.”

I stood.

“The cottage.”

Daniel immediately understood.

“The yellow kitchen.”

We returned to the cottage with police escort.

The house looked peaceful.

That almost made it worse.

I walked into the kitchen.

Yellow walls.

White cabinets.

The small table beside the window.

The flowers Ruth had bought last week.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Then I remembered Thomas.

He had visited the property once before I bought it.

He had stood in the kitchen.

He had looked toward the pantry.

I had asked what he was doing.

He had smiled.

“Making sure the light works.”

I walked to the pantry.

The light still worked.

I opened the door.

Shelves.

Cans.

Jars.

Nothing.

I checked the floor.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a slight difference in the wood.

One plank was newer.

I knelt.

Daniel brought a screwdriver.

We lifted it.

A narrow cavity appeared.

Inside was a black ledger.

I stared at it.

“That's it.”

The detective photographed it before allowing me to touch it.

The cover had no label.

I opened the first page.

Thomas's handwriting.

The entries were different from the first ledger.

This one contained names.

Not payments.

Not properties.

People.

And beside each name was a date.

Some had one mark.

Some had two.

One had three.

I turned pages.

Then I stopped.

Graham.

My son's name appeared halfway down the page.

Beside it were two dates.

One was the day Thomas died.

The other was six months later.

I looked at Graham.

“What does this mean?”

He stared at the page.

“I don't know.”

Daniel took the ledger.

He read the next entry.

Paige.

Three dates.

Ruth.

One.

Me.

None.

My heart tightened.

“Why am I not listed?”

Daniel looked at the final pages.

“Because this isn't a list of suspects.”

“What is it?”

He turned the page.

At the top was a heading.

PEOPLE WHO WERE GIVEN A CHOICE.

I looked at Graham.

His face had gone pale.

“What choice?”

Daniel read the first entry.

“Those who choose loyalty will be protected.”

He turned another page.

“Those who choose greed will be exposed.”

Another.

“Those who choose fear will be given one chance to tell the truth.”

I looked at Paige.

She lowered her head.

“And those who choose love?” I asked.

Daniel turned the final page.

The answer was written there.

“Those people were never meant to know they were being tested.”

I felt tears rise.

Thomas had not merely built a financial structure.

He had watched the people around him.

He had tried to understand who they became when money, fear, and power entered the room.

Then I saw one final name.

Charles Benton.

Beside it were three marks.

Daniel stared.

“He failed every test.”

I closed the ledger.

Then I noticed something beneath it.

A small photograph.

It showed Thomas standing beside a woman.

I knew her.

Not from the photograph.

From memory.

She had been at Thomas's funeral.

She had stood at the back.

She had never spoken to me.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is she?”

His face changed.

“That's Eleanor Hale.”

I froze.

“Hale?”

“Yes.”

“Martin's wife?”

Daniel nodded.

“She died eight years ago.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Thomas had been standing beside her.

On the back was a date.

Three weeks before Thomas hired Daniel.

And beneath it, in Thomas's handwriting, were five words.

She knows what Martin did.

I looked toward the door.

Martin had not been acting alone.

And if Eleanor knew what he had done before she died, then Thomas had been investigating the Hale family long before any of us realized.

The second ledger had not answered our questions.

It had created a new one.

What had Martin
