hours.

They found no sign of forced entry.

That frightened me more than a broken window would have.

Whoever had entered had either been let inside or had known exactly how to get through the door.

Ruth's purse was missing.

Her phone was gone.

Her car remained in the driveway.

There was no blood.

No obvious struggle.

No reason to believe she had been physically harmed.

But there was also no Ruth.

I stood in the kitchen staring at the empty chair where she usually it.

“It isn't broken.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Exactly.”

He crouched.

“Look at the scratch.”

I bent down.

A thin mark crossed the metal plate.

“Someone used a bypass tool.”

The officer looked closer.

“You're right.”

Daniel stood.

“Whoever entered knew what they were doing.”

“Professional?” Martin asked.

“Possibly.”

I thought about Charles.

His access.

His network.

His years of planning.

“Could he have taken Ruth?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To frighten us.”

The officer interrupted.

“Mrs. Mercer, I need to ask you something.”

“Yes?”

“Has anyone contacted you since your sister disappeared?”

“No.”

“Threatened you?”

I looked at the note.

“Yes.”

He photographed it.

“Then you need protection.”

I almost laughed.

“I've been trying to protect myself for years.”

He didn't smile.

“I mean physical protection.”

He gave us instructions.

We were not to travel alone.

We were not to return to the old house without officers.

We were not to confront anyone.

I agreed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A distorted voice spoke.

“You should have left the trust alone.”

My heart hammered.

“Where is Ruth?”

“Safe.”

“Let me speak to her.”

“Not yet.”

“Who are you?”

“You know.”

“No.”

“You know exactly who I am.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel asked, “What did he say?”

I repeated it.

Martin looked at the police officer.

“We need to trace that call.”

The officer nodded.

But the number was masked.

No useful location.

Still, the call confirmed one thing.

Ruth was alive.

For the moment.

That night, we stayed at the cottage together.

Graham slept on the couch.

Daniel remained in the guest room.

Martin left after arranging additional security.

I sat alone in the kitchen.

The yellow walls looked almost too bright.

I opened Thomas's letter again.

There was a sentence I had overlooked.

If Ruth is ever threatened, look beneath the seventeenth property.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Seventeenth property.

I called Daniel.

He came downstairs.

“What is it?”

I showed him the letter.

His expression changed.

“Property seventeen.”

“The house?”

“No.”

He pulled out the list.

He counted.

One.

Two.

Three.

He reached seventeen.

An old commercial building near the river.

“What is there?”

“Records.”

“How do you know?”

“Thomas mentioned it.”

“Then that's where we go.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because if Charles knows about Ruth, he may expect us to follow the clue.”

I thought about it.

“You're right.”

The next morning, Martin returned.

I told him.

He studied the sentence.

“We need a warrant.”

“For what?”

“To search the property.”

“How long?”

“Not long if we establish probable cause.”

Daniel shook his head.

“We don't have time.”

Martin looked at him.

“Neither does Ruth.”

Silence.

Then I said, “We'll do it legally.”

Daniel nodded.

Hours later, the warrant was approved.

We went with officers.

The building looked abandoned.

Windows were boarded.

Weeds grew through cracks in the pavement.

The seventeenth unit was locked.

A key from Thomas's box opened it.

Inside was a room filled with filing cabinets.

At the center sat a metal table.

On it was a tape recorder.

Martin pressed play.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

My breath caught.

“If you're hearing this, Evelyn, then things went wrong.”

I closed my eyes.

His voice sounded tired.

Older.

But unmistakably his.

“I know you'll be angry that I kept this from you.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“You have every right to be.”

The recording continued.

“I built the trust because I needed to protect the properties from people who believed money gave them ownership of other people's lives.”

I looked at Graham.

Thomas continued.

“Graham will want to understand why I didn't leave everything directly to him.”

My son's eyes filled.

“It's because inheritance is not love.”

Graham covered his mouth.

“It is responsibility.”

The tape clicked.

Then Thomas said something that made everyone freeze.

“Charles is not the person you should fear most.”

Daniel leaned forward.

The recording continued.

“Charles is greedy.”

A pause.

“Greedy men can be understood.”

My hands tightened.

“The dangerous person is the one who believes betrayal is justified.”

The tape ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel noticed a second recorder.

He pressed play.

A woman's voice emerged.

Paige.

“I don't know how much longer I can keep Evelyn out of this.”

My body went cold.

The recording continued.

“I've done what you asked.”

A man's voice answered.

Charles.

“You haven't done enough.”

Paige said, “She suspects.”

“Then move her.”

“I can't.”

“Make her believe Graham wants her gone.”

I closed my eyes.

The conversation continued.

“You promised.”

“I know.”

“Then keep your promise.”

The recording stopped.

Graham stood perfectly still.

“That was before I married you,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Paige had not been lying about everything.

But she had participated.

She had helped create the belief that Graham wanted me gone.

She had allowed me to think my son was abandoning me.

The final recording was shorter.

Charles's voice.

“The lottery changes everything.”

I froze.

The recording had been made before my birthday.

He knew.

He had known I might win.

Or he had known Thomas's trust would activate if I received independent funds.

Either way, the timing was no accident.

Charles continued.

“Once Evelyn has independent money, the trust becomes active.”

A pause.

“Then we take control before she understands what she owns.”

The recording ended.

I looked at Daniel.

“How long has he known?”

“Years.”

“About the trust?”

“Yes.”

“And Ruth?”

“Probably because she was close to you.”

I turned toward the filing cabinets.

“We need to find her.”

We searched until we found a second envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Ruth was sitting in a chair.

Her hands were free.

She was alive.

Behind her was a wall I recognized.

The old house.

On the back was a message.

BRING THE LEDGER.

I looked at Daniel.

“They want the ledger.”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“They want you to think they want the ledger.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas left something else.”

He pointed to the photograph.

Behind Ruth, barely visible on the wall, was a painting.

A landscape.

I knew it.

It had hung above the fireplace in our old house.

There was something behind it.

A hidden compartment.

Thomas had shown me the painting once.

I had forgotten.

Now I remembered exactly what he said.

Some things are safest behind something everyone sees.

I stood.

“We go back to the house.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Behind the Painting Everyone
