The brass light beside the front door still flickered when the wind moved through the wiring. Graham's children's bicycles remained beside the garage, and the flowerpot Paige had cracked the previous summer was still sitting near the steps.

From the street, nothing had changed.

Inside, everything had.

I stood in the driveway beside Martin, Daniel, and Graham, staring at the place where I had spent four years pretending I still belonged.

“It isn't being sold,” Martin said.

I looked at him.

“No.”

He held the trust document in his hand.

“The property is being transferred.”

“To whom?”

“To the Mercer Family Trust.”

Graham looked at the house.

“So the eviction notice was never really about selling it.”

“Not in the ordinary sense,” Martin said.

“Then why send it?”

“To create pressure.”

Daniel answered before Martin could.

“Pressure makes people reveal what they know.”

Graham turned toward him.

“Who was being pressured?”

“All of you.”

I felt the old cold sensation return.

Someone had wanted us frightened enough to make mistakes.

Paige had reacted by investigating.

Graham had contacted attorneys.

I had left.

And because I had left, I had become independent.

Exactly what Thomas had intended.

We entered through the front door.

The house smelled of cardboard, dust, and the lemon cleaner Paige used every Saturday.

Boxes covered the living room.

The children were staying with Paige's sister while everything was sorted.

Graham walked slowly through the room.

“I hate this.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Seeing it like this.”

“You'll have another home.”

He shook his head.

“This was where the kids grew up.”

“I know.”

He touched the back of the sofa.

“I thought we were losing it.”

“We were.”

He looked at me.

“Were we?”

I nodded.

“Not because someone wanted you homeless.”

“Then why?”

“Because someone wanted you to believe the house was theirs to control.”

Martin opened the old desk.

Inside was a bundle of papers.

He checked each one.

“Tax records.”

“Insurance.”

“Mortgage.”

Then he stopped.

“What?”

He held up a document.

“Original purchase agreement.”

Graham came closer.

The document showed Thomas's name.

But beneath it was another entity.

Mercer Family Trust.

Graham stared.

“Dad bought this house through the trust?”

“Yes.”

“But we've paid rent.”

Martin nodded.

“To a management company.”

“Who received the money?”

“We're checking.”

I felt anger rise.

Not because of the rent.

Because Thomas had built a structure around the family and none of us had understood it.

“How long has the trust owned it?”

Martin checked.

“Since the year before Graham moved in.”

I looked at my son.

He seemed almost embarrassed.

“Dad never told me.”

“He didn't want you to know.”

“Why?”

Daniel answered.

“Because if you knew, you might start making decisions based on what you believed you'd inherit.”

Graham's face tightened.

“So he didn't trust me.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“He trusted you enough to give you time.”

Graham lowered his eyes.

That distinction seemed to hurt him more than an accusation would have.

We moved through the house.

In the basement, Martin found another locked cabinet.

The key was taped beneath the second shelf.

Inside were property files.

One folder contained records from T&E Property Holdings.

Another contained payments to Charles Benton.

A third was labeled simply C.

I opened it.

Inside were copies of emails.

The earliest was dated eight years ago.

Charles had written to someone whose name had been blacked out.

The message discussed transferring ownership of several properties without drawing attention.

One sentence was underlined.

Evelyn must remain uninformed until the trust is activated.

My hands tightened around the paper.

“They knew about me.”

“Yes,” Martin said.

I turned the page.

Another message mentioned the lottery.

Not my lottery win.

A hypothetical future event.

If Evelyn receives independent funds, the trust becomes active.

That was the same condition Thomas had written.

I stared at Daniel.

“How did Charles know?”

“Because he had access to Thomas's records.”

“And someone else?”

Daniel nodded.

“Someone was feeding him information.”

Graham looked at the papers.

“Paige?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not necessarily.”

Graham looked relieved for half a second.

Then Daniel added, “We haven't ruled her out of everything.”

The relief disappeared.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

We all froze.

Martin motioned for us to stay quiet.

Another sound.

A cabinet closing.

Someone was inside the house.

Graham moved toward the stairs.

I caught his arm.

“No.”

He stopped.

Daniel was already moving.

He went upstairs silently.

A moment later, we heard a door slam.

Then footsteps.

Daniel shouted, “Stop!”

Graham ran after him.

Martin followed.

I remained on the stairs until I heard the front door crash open.

Then silence.

When they returned, Daniel was carrying a small black case.

“Did you catch him?” I asked.

“No.”

“Who was it?”

“Couldn't see his face.”

“What did he take?”

Daniel opened the case.

Nothing.

“He dropped this.”

Inside was a key card.

Martin examined it.

“Charles's office.”

I stared at the card.

“He was here looking for something.”

Daniel nodded.

“What?”

We searched again.

This time, we found a hidden compartment beneath the floorboard in the study.

Inside was a single envelope.

Thomas had written one word on it.

LAST.

I opened it.

The contents were not financial documents.

They were photographs.

One showed Charles meeting someone.

The face was partially hidden.

The second showed Charles entering a bank.

The third showed Charles leaving with a woman.

I stared at the woman.

I knew her.

Paige.

Graham's breath caught.

“She told me she barely knew him.”

“She may have been lying,” Martin said.

I looked closer.

The photograph was dated twelve years ago.

Before Paige married Graham.

Before she knew our family.

Before Thomas died.

Graham stared at his wife.

“Why would she meet him before she met me?”

Nobody answered.

The final photograph showed Paige handing Charles a folder.

On the back was a handwritten date.

The same day Thomas hired Daniel.

I felt the room go silent.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Was Paige involved from the beginning?”

He studied the photograph.

“I don't know.”

Graham looked devastated.

“She told me she met Charles through Dad.”

“Maybe she did.”

“But this is before.”

“Yes.”

He sank onto the chair.

I wanted to comfort him.

Instead, I waited.

He needed to understand that loving someone didn't require inventing explanations for them.

Martin took the photograph.

“We need Paige here.”

Graham shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if she knows what we found, she'll run.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Or she'll finally tell the truth.”

Graham stared at the photograph.

Then he said quietly, “Call her.”

Martin did.

She arrived forty minutes later.

The moment she saw the photograph, she stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Her face lost all color.

“You found it,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“What is this?”

She closed the door behind her.

“I was hoping you never would.”

Graham stood.

“You lied to me.”

Paige looked at him.

“I did.”

“Why?”

She looked at me.

“Because your father asked me to.”

The room went completely still.

“What?”

Paige's voice shook.

“Thomas asked me to keep Charles away from you.”

I stared at her.

“Then why were you meeting him?”

“Because I was working against him.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“You were an informant.”

Paige nodded.

Graham looked as though someone had struck him.

“Then why did you try to move Mom into Pine Harbor?”

Paige closed her eyes.

“Because Charles told me he was going to activate the trust before Evelyn knew what it contained.”

I stepped closer.

“What did that mean?”

“He said the trust would control the house, the properties, and the company.”

“Why move me?”

“To get you away from the records.”

I stared at her.

“You were trying to protect me?”

“I thought I was.”

“You made me believe I was a burden.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“You let me think my own son wanted me gone.”

“I know.”

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

She looked at Daniel.

“Because Charles had proof that he could destroy Graham's career.”

Graham's face hardened.

“What proof?”

Paige whispered the answer.

“The forged transfer.”

I stared at her.

“He threatened to frame Graham as the person who ordered it.”

Graham sat down.

The room seemed to shrink around us.

All those years.

All those assumptions.

All that damage.

A lie built to protect another lie.

And still, one question remained.

“If you were protecting us,” I said, “why did you help Charles create the transfer?”

Paige looked at me.

“I didn't.”

“Then who did?”

She swallowed.

“Charles used my old company as a cover.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“And you let him?”

“I was terrified.”

I nodded slowly.

“That part I believe.”

Paige began to cry.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because Thomas was dead.”

Her voice broke.

“And I didn't know who I could trust.”

I looked around the room.

The answer was painful.

Neither did I.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10:
