14 – The Name Beneath the Oak Tree Was Impossible to Accept, Because the Person Richard Trusted Had Never Told Me Why

I read the name again.

Then again.

My hands went numb.

Thomas reached for the paper.

"Let me see."

I gave it to him.

His eyebrows rose.

"You know this person?"

"Yes."

"How well?"

"Very well."

He looked at me.

"How?"

I swallowed.

"She's my closest friend."

Thomas stared at the name.

Evelyn Parker.

For thirty-two years, Evelyn had been part of my life.

She was the woman I called when Richard was sick.

The person who helped me after his funeral.

The one who had stood beside me at my birthday party.

She knew everything about my marriage.

Everything about my children.

Everything about my grief.

And apparently, she had known something else.

Something Richard had hidden from me.

"I don't understand."

Thomas handed me the note.

"Neither do I."

I read the final lines.

Richard said Evelyn had helped him preserve the documents after he realized he could no longer trust anyone in the family.

He said she had agreed to keep the secret because she believed I deserved the chance to live without fear.

He also warned me that Evelyn might never tell me unless I discovered the evidence myself.

I looked toward the house.

"Why would she do that?"

Thomas didn't answer.

I called her.

She didn't pick up.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then I sent a message.

We need to talk.

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally, a reply came.

I know.

I stared at the screen.

Where are you?

At home.

I'm coming.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

She walked through the front door carrying no purse.

Her face looked pale.

I had never seen her look frightened.

Not even when Richard died.

Now she did.

She saw the key on the table.

Then the note.

She closed her eyes.

"He finally told you."

"He left it for me."

Evelyn sat down.

"How long have you known?"

"Since before Richard died."

"How long?"

"Thirty years."

I felt betrayed.

"Thirty years?"

She nodded.

"Why?"

"Because he asked me to."

"You promised him."

"Yes."

"You promised him before he died."

"Yes."

"Even after he died?"

She looked at me.

"Especially after he died."

I stood.

"You watched me grieve."

"I know."

"You watched me wonder whether I had done something wrong."

"I know."

"You watched me struggle with the children."

"I know."

"And you said nothing."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Richard believed telling you would put you in danger."

I shook my head.

"Everyone says that."

She looked down.

"Because it's true."

I wanted to be angry.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

"What did you do for him?"

"I stored documents."

"Where?"

"Several places."

"Did you know about the hidden compartments?"

"Some."

"The ledger?"

"Yes."

"The Ellis family?"

"Yes."

"Samuel?"

"Yes."

I stared at her.

"Who is Jonathan Reed?"

Evelyn's face changed.

"You found that too."

"Answer me."

"Jonathan was the original witness."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"Does Samuel?"

"Yes."

"Then why hasn't he found him?"

"Because Jonathan has been hiding."

"From Samuel?"

"From everyone."

Evelyn looked toward the garden.

"He is afraid."

"Why?"

"Because he knows what happened after the Willow Creek transfer."

"What happened?"

She hesitated.

"Someone died."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

"One of the families who lost their property."

"How?"

"They were forced out."

"That doesn't answer me."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"The father killed himself."

I sat down.

"Richard knew?"

"Yes."

"Did he blame himself?"

"Every day."

I thought of the letter.

His refusal to ask forgiveness.

His obsession with repairing the damage.

It all made sense.

But one question remained.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Evelyn looked directly at me.

"Because he believed you would blame yourself too."

"Why would I?"

"Because he knew you would try to fix everything."

I almost laughed.

"That's ridiculous."

"Is it?"

She smiled sadly.

"You've spent your entire life trying to take care of everyone."

I looked away.

She was right.

Evelyn reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small notebook.

"I kept this for you."

I recognized the cover.

Richard's handwriting.

But this time, the notebook was filled with Evelyn's notes.

Dates.

Meetings.

Names.

Locations.

And one repeated phrase.

Protect Maggie.

I looked at her.

"He really thought I was in danger."

"Yes."

"From Samuel?"

"At first."

"And later?"

"From everyone who wanted the records destroyed."

I turned the pages.

There were entries from the year after Richard's death.

Evelyn had documented calls.

Threats.

People asking whether Richard had left anything behind.

She had lied to them.

She had told them the estate contained nothing unusual.

She had protected me.

But then I found something else.

A name.

Michael.

I looked up.

"Why is my son here?"

Evelyn looked ashamed.

"He contacted me."

"When?"

"Two years ago."

"Why?"

"He wanted to know whether Richard had left evidence."

I closed my eyes.

"Did you tell him?"

"No."

"Did he know about you?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Richard mentioned me."

I stared at her.

"So Michael knew there was another person protecting the documents."

"Yes."

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Again."

She nodded.

"He was afraid of Samuel."

I looked at the notebook.

"Then Michael wasn't only after money."

"No."

"He was trying to protect himself."

"Partly."

"What else?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"He had already borrowed money from someone connected to Samuel."

My stomach tightened.

"How much?"

"Enough to put him in danger."

I remembered Michael's confession.

He had said he wanted the estate so he could disappear.

Now I understood why.

He hadn't simply been greedy.

He had been trapped.

Still, he had made choices.

He had lied.

He had pressured me.

He had frightened me.

Fear explained behavior.

It didn't excuse it.

I called Michael.

He answered immediately.

"Mom?"

"Come here."

He arrived within an hour.

When he saw Evelyn, he stopped.

"You found out."

"Yes."

He looked at the floor.

"How much did you know?"

"Enough."

He sat down.

"Mom, I was going to tell you."

"When?"

"I don't know."

"That's the problem."

He nodded.

I asked him about the money.

He admitted borrowing it.

He had invested in a business venture recommended by someone connected to Samuel.

The venture collapsed.

The debt remained.

Samuel offered to erase part of it if Michael helped locate Richard's documents.

Michael agreed.

Then Richard died.

Michael panicked.

He wanted the house.

He wanted the estate.

He thought if he gained control, he could sell everything and repay the debt.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"Because I was ashamed."

"You should have."

"I know."

He looked at Evelyn.

"She saved me."

I stared at her.

"What did you do?"

"I paid the first part of the debt."

"With what?"

"Money Richard left with me."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Richard planned for this?"

"Yes."

Michael lowered his head.

"He knew I was vulnerable."

"And still trusted you?"

"Richard loved you both."

I looked at Michael.

"Did you ever intend to hurt me?"

"No."

"Did you ever intend to take my house?"

He hesitated.

"Yes."

The honesty hurt.

"But I didn't want to hurt you."

"You did."

"I know."

The room was quiet.

Then Michael asked, "What happens now?"

I looked at the note.

"I don't know."

Evelyn stood.

"You need to decide whether to release everything."

I looked at her.

"Everything?"

"The full archive."

"Why?"

"Because there are still people who have never been held accountable."

"And Richard?"

She nodded.

"His name is in it."

I knew.

That was the price.

If I released everything, Richard's reputation would be permanently changed.

His mistakes would become public.

His efforts to repair them might be acknowledged.

But they would never erase what he had done.

I sat with that.

Then I remembered Clara.

Returned at last.

I remembered the families.

The land.

The children.

The people who had lost everything.

I knew what I had to do.

"We release it."

Michael looked at me.

"Mom."

"I've decided."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Then I will help."

Thomas arrived that evening.

We sat together around the kitchen table.

The documents were spread before us.

The archive would be transferred to investigators.

The evidence would be preserved.

The names would be verified.

Nothing would be released recklessly.

But nothing would be hidden simply to protect the Harris name.

Before signing the authorization, I looked at Richard's photograph.

"I'm sorry."

Thomas looked at me.

"Are you?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

"For choosing the truth."

He shook his head.

"I don't think Richard would want you to apologize for that."

Maybe.

But I knew something else.

Truth could be an act of love.

Even when it hurt.

Especially then.

<a
