Only that you would recognize it."

I looked at the evidence.

"What am I supposed to do with this?"

"That is why Richard left the choice to you."

"What would you do?"

She was silent.

Then she said, "I would remember the people who lost everything."

I closed my eyes.

Thomas sat across from me.

"We need to involve authorities," he said.

I looked at him.

"Do we?"

"Margaret, some of these documents may establish criminal conduct."

"But some of the people are dead."

"The consequences aren't."

He was right.

Still, I was afraid.

"What if this destroys people who had nothing to do with it?"

"Then the investigation will determine what is relevant."

"What if someone comes after me?"

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

"That's a possibility."

I looked at the cameras outside.

The gate.

The locks.

All the precautions I had taken because of my children.

Now the threat felt larger.

That evening, I called Jennifer.

She answered quickly.

"Mom?"

"I need to ask you something."

"Okay."

"Did you ever know about your grandfather's business?"

She went silent.

"Why are you asking?"

"Because your father kept records."

Jennifer's breathing changed.

"What records?"

"Records concerning property transfers."

She whispered, "Oh my God."

"What?"

"I remember Dad fighting with Grandpa about something."

"When?"

"I was young."

"What did you hear?"

"He said Grandpa had ruined people."

I looked at Thomas.

"Did he ever explain?"

"No."

"Did he tell you about a hidden room?"

"No."

I believed her.

Then I called Lisa.

She remembered even less.

Michael was different.

When I asked him, he immediately said, "I don't know what you're talking about."

Too quickly.

I paused.

"Michael."

"What?"

"Did your father ever show you anything?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Because I found documents."

Silence.

Then he asked, "Where?"

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"I want to know what you're talking about."

"No."

"Mom."

"No."

He ended the call.

Thomas looked at me.

"That was interesting."

"Yes."

The next morning, I discovered the basement door open.

I had locked it.

I checked the cameras.

At 2:13 a.m., someone approached the house.

The figure wore dark clothing.

They never came through the front gate.

They went around the side.

Then disappeared from view.

The basement door opened at 2:19.

My blood ran cold.

Thomas called the police.

Officers searched the property.

Nothing was missing.

Except one thing.

A single folder.

The folder containing copies of the protected account documents.

I stared at the empty space.

Someone had known exactly where to look.

The police asked whether I suspected anyone.

I said nothing.

But in my mind, one name appeared.

Michael.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice said, "You should have left the past buried."

I froze.

"Who is this?"

"You know what your husband was protecting."

"Who are you?"

The caller hung up.

Thomas took the phone.

"We need to treat this seriously."

"I am."

"No."

He looked directly at me.

"You need to understand that this is no longer a family dispute."

I nodded.

For the first time, I believed him.

That afternoon, I moved the original evidence to a secure location.

I kept only copies at home.

Then I called Eleanor.

"We need to meet."

She agreed.

But before I could leave, Jennifer arrived.

She was crying.

"Mom."

"What happened?"

"I think Michael knows."

"Knows what?"

"About the documents."

I stared at her.

"How?"

"Because he called me last night."

"What did he say?"

"He asked whether you had told me about Grandpa."

"What did you say?"

"Nothing."

She wiped her face.

Then she whispered, "Mom, Michael isn't the only one who knows."

I felt the room go cold.

"Who else?"

Jennifer looked toward the windows.

"Someone has been asking about Dad for years."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

She lowered her voice.

"But Dad was afraid of him."

I thought of the unknown caller.

Then I thought of Richard's final warning.

I had believed the danger came from my children.

Maybe Richard had always known better.

<a
