6 – Eleanor Knew the Secret Richard Had Buried for Decades, and She Refused to Tell Me Unless I Saw the Place He Had Kept It

I drove to Boulder two days later.

Thomas wanted to come with me.

I refused.

Not because I didn't trust him.

Because I needed one conversation in my life that wasn't filtered through legal documents.

Eleanor had given me an address in an older neighborhood near the foothills.

The house was small.

White siding.

Blue shutters.

A narrow garden filled with rosemary and lavender.

When I knocked, a woman with silver hair opened the door.

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she smiled sadly.

"You have his eyes."

I swallowed.

"Richard?"

"Yes."

She stepped aside.

"Come in."

The living room was filled with photographs.

Most were of people I didn't recognize.

Then I saw Richard.

He was young.

Maybe twenty-five.

Standing beside Eleanor.

His arm was around her shoulders.

I picked up the frame.

"When was this taken?"

"1969."

I looked at her.

"Why didn't he ever tell me about you?"

"He did."

"When?"

"Not in the way you mean."

She walked toward the kitchen.

"He told you pieces."

I followed.

"He told me he had a sister."

"He probably said I died."

I stopped.

"He did."

Eleanor nodded.

"That was easier."

"Easier for whom?"

"For him."

She poured coffee.

Then placed a cup in front of me.

"Sit."

I did.

"Start at the beginning."

She looked toward the window.

"Our father was a difficult man."

I waited.

"He believed money gave him authority over everyone around him."

"Was he wealthy?"

"Very."

"How wealthy?"

"Enough to own land, businesses, and people who were afraid of losing their jobs."

I frowned.

"People?"

"He treated employees like property."

She folded her hands.

"Richard hated it."

"What happened?"

"Our father had a private arrangement with several businessmen."

"What kind?"

"Land purchases."

"That doesn't sound unusual."

"It wasn't the land."

She looked at me.

"It was how they obtained it."

She explained that their father had acquired properties from families who were under financial pressure.

He used shell companies.

Middlemen.

Debt.

Threats.

Sometimes people didn't know who actually owned the company making the offer.

Sometimes the price was deliberately kept low.

Sometimes records disappeared.

I listened.

"Richard found evidence?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"He was twenty-three."

"What did he do?"

"He wanted to expose it."

I stared at her.

"Did he?"

"Not immediately."

"Why?"

"Because our father threatened him."

"With what?"

"With destroying the family."

I thought of Richard's caution.

His tendency to keep records.

His refusal to discuss certain parts of his childhood.

It suddenly made sense.

"What happened to you?"

Eleanor looked down.

"I found the documents too."

"Then what?"

"I tried to take them."

She paused.

"Our father discovered me."

"What did he do?"

"He sent me away."

"Where?"

"California."

"Why?"

"He told everyone I had chosen to leave."

I felt a chill.

"Did Richard know?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't he come after you?"

"He did."

She smiled faintly.

"That was the beginning of everything."

Richard had secretly visited Eleanor for years.

He brought her money.

Documents.

Information.

Eventually, he helped her establish a new identity and a separate life.

But he never brought her back into the family.

"Why?"

"Because our father had people watching us."

"Did he threaten Richard?"

"He threatened both of us."

I thought of the protected account.

"Was the money connected to your father's business?"

Eleanor nodded.

"Some of it."

"How much?"

"Enough to make powerful people nervous."

I felt cold.

"How much?"

She looked at me.

"More than you think."

She went to another room.

When she returned, she carried a metal box.

She placed it on the table.

"Richard left this with me."

I stared at it.

"Why?"

"He said I should give it to you only after your children tried to take control of your estate."

My breath caught.

"So he expected this."

"Yes."

"How?"

"Because he knew history repeated itself."

She opened the box.

Inside were property records.

Old letters.

Photographs.

And a small cassette tape.

I stared at it.

"What's on that?"

"Our father's confession."

I looked up.

"What?"

"He recorded it himself."

"Why?"

"Because he was dying."

She placed the tape in my hand.

"Richard spent years trying to find proof."

"And he found it."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he expose everything?"

Eleanor looked at me.

"Because the people involved were still alive."

"Was he afraid?"

"Not for himself."

"For me."

She nodded.

"He believed that if the information became public, you would become a target."

I closed my eyes.

"How many people knew?"

"Enough."

"What does that have to do with my children?"

"Nothing."

I looked at her.

"Then why did Richard put the condition in the trust?"

"Because he needed to know whether your children could be trusted with the truth."

I didn't understand.

Eleanor continued.

"He believed money would reveal their character."

"And it did."

"Yes."

She touched the metal box.

"Richard wasn't testing them to punish them."

"Then what was he doing?"

"Protecting the evidence."

I stared at the box.

"Why?"

"Because if his children proved they were willing to manipulate you for money, he knew they couldn't be trusted with something much more dangerous."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What is more dangerous than money?"

Eleanor's answer was immediate.

"Names."

She showed me a ledger.

It contained names of businessmen, politicians, lawyers, and property owners.

Some were dead.

Some were not.

Some had children and grandchildren who now held respectable positions.

I understood.

"This could destroy families."

"It could expose crimes."

"Then why give it to me?"

"Because Richard wanted you to decide."

I looked at the pages.

"I don't want this."

"You may not have a choice."

"Why?"

She reached into the box and handed me another envelope.

Richard's handwriting.

My name.

I opened it.

Maggie,

If you're reading this, you've already discovered what I hoped you would never need to know.

I stopped.

My hands shook.

He explained that he had spent decades protecting evidence connected to our family's history.

He had wanted to destroy it more than once.

But he couldn't.

Too many people had been harmed.

Too many families had lost homes and businesses.

He believed the truth belonged to them.

Then he wrote about our children.

He said he had watched them grow.

He loved them.

But he had become increasingly concerned about their relationship with money.

He feared that if they inherited the evidence along with the fortune, they might destroy it.

That was why he created the trust.

Not simply to protect me.

To protect the truth.

I lowered the letter.

Eleanor watched me.

"Did Richard ever tell you he regretted keeping this secret?"

"Every time he visited."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he loved you."

I laughed bitterly.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It did to him."

I looked down.

"Where is the rest?"

"What rest?"

"The evidence."

Eleanor's face changed.

"There is another location."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"Richard never told me."

"Then how do we find it?"

She pointed to the ledger.

"There's a clue."

I opened it.

Most pages contained names and numbers.

At the bottom of one page was a symbol.

A circle.

A line.

Three dots.

"What is this?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"Richard used it when he didn't want something written plainly."

"Do you know what it means?"

"Yes."

I looked at her.

"It means Willow."

My pulse quickened.

"Willow what?"

She looked at me.

"Willow Creek."

I stared at the page.

My house.

My home.

The place where Richard and I had raised our children.

The place I had almost sold.

The place my children had tried to take.

Eleanor whispered, "Your house wasn't chosen because it was valuable."

I couldn't speak.

"It was chosen because something was hidden there."

The drive back to Denver felt endless.

I called Thomas before I reached home.

"I need you to search every record connected to the house."

"What are you looking for?"

"Anything from before Richard and I bought it."

He went quiet.

"Why?"

"Because the house has a history."

"What kind?"

"I don't know yet."

When I arrived home, I walked straight to the basement.

I looked at the walls.

The floor.

The shelves.

The old furnace.

Nothing seemed different.

Then I noticed the foundation.

One section had been repaired.

The concrete looked newer than the surrounding stone.

I knelt.

My fingers traced the edge.

There was a small metal plate embedded in the wall.

Three dots.

A line.

A circle.

The same symbol from the ledger.

I stood.

My heart was pounding.

I called Thomas again.

"Come to the house."

"Why?"

"I found something."

He arrived forty minutes later.

When he saw the symbol, his face changed.

"I've seen this before."

"Where?"

"In Richard's files."

He took out his phone.

He opened a photograph.

The same symbol.

Beside it, one word.

Tomorrow.

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas looked toward the basement wall.

"I think we're standing in front of the answer."

Click here to continue reading: PART 7:
