17 – Richard Mercer Had Been Hiding Behind the Family Name for Years, and His Confession Revealed Why Thomas Never Trusted His Own Legacy

The first thing I noticed the morning after Richard's arrest was how ordinary the kitchen looked.

Sunlight rested on the counter.

The kettle clicked off.

A sparrow landed on the porch railing and disappeared again.

Nothing about the room suggested that three men had spent years manipulating my family, moving property through hidden companies, and trying to take control of assets Thomas had protected long before I understood what they were worth.

I made coffee.

Then I made a second cup.

Graham came downstairs and stopped when he saw me.

“You're cooking again.”

“I live here.”

He smiled.

“That's not what I meant.”

“I know.”

He pulled out a chair.

For the first time, there was no urgency in his face.

No question about lawyers.

No phone pressed against his ear.

No fear of another knock at the door.

Just my son sitting at my table.

“I slept,” he said.

“So did I.”

“Really?”

“Mostly.”

He smiled.

“I haven't slept properly in months.”

I poured his coffee.

“You should start.”

“I will.”

We sat quietly.

Then Graham said, “I keep thinking about Dad.”

“So do I.”

“I used to think he didn't believe in me.”

“I know.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“You always answer that quickly.”

“Because you don't need me to soften everything anymore.”

He nodded.

“That may be the hardest thing to get used to.”

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

He asked me to come to the courthouse.

Richard had requested a private meeting.

I almost refused.

Then Daniel said something that changed my mind.

“He asked specifically for you.”

I arrived forty minutes later.

Richard was sitting behind a glass partition in an interview room.

He looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.

He was seventy-one, perhaps.

His hair was white.

His clothes were immaculate.

His posture remained straight.

He looked like a man who had spent his life being listened to.

When I entered, he smiled.

“Evelyn.”

I sat across from him.

“You know my name.”

“I knew your name before Thomas married you.”

That unsettled me.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas talked about you.”

“Good things?”

“Mostly.”

I waited.

Richard folded his hands.

“You resemble your mother.”

I stared at him.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“You knew her?”

“I knew your family.”

I felt something tighten inside me.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas and I built a company together.”

“I know that now.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You know the public version.”

He leaned closer.

“Thomas and I were brothers in everything but blood.”

“And then?”

“Then he decided morality mattered more than success.”

I said nothing.

“He wanted the company clean.”

“And you didn't?”

“I wanted it profitable.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

His smile faded.

“It isn't.”

He looked toward the glass.

“Thomas became convinced I was stealing.”

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

The admission came without hesitation.

I studied him.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only one that matters.”

I leaned back.

“You stole from Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“You used shell companies.”

“Yes.”

“You worked with Charles.”

“Yes.”

“You paid Martin.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

The ease of his answers frightened me.

“What did you want?”

He looked at me.

“The company.”

“You had your own.”

“It wasn't enough.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas had something I didn't.”

“What?”

“Trust.”

I frowned.

“He had employees who believed in him. Banks that believed in him. People who would lend him money on a handshake.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“I had money.”

“You wanted his respect.”

“I wanted his position.”

“And you couldn't have both.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“That was my mistake.”

I expected an apology.

None came.

Instead, he continued.

“When Thomas discovered the transfers, he hired Daniel.”

“I know.”

“He thought Daniel would expose me.”

“He almost did.”

Richard smiled.

“He was very good.”

“Then why didn't you stop him?”

“I tried.”

“Charles tried.”

“Martin tried.”

“Yes.”

“But Thomas still won.”

Richard looked at me.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Thomas died.”

The words landed heavily.

Richard continued.

“And after he died, everyone assumed the game was over.”

“But it wasn't.”

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Because Thomas had one final move.”

“The trust.”

“Yes.”

I folded my hands.

“What did you think the trust would do?”

“Eventually give you control.”

“Why were you afraid of me?”

“Because Thomas trusted you.”

I almost laughed.

“I didn't know anything.”

“That was exactly why.”

He leaned forward.

“You were not ambitious.”

“I had no interest in his company.”

“You didn't understand the machinery.”

“Correct.”

“And you didn't care about the money.”

“Not until recently.”

He nodded.

“Which made you impossible to manipulate.”

I thought of Thomas's letter.

Maybe that had been the point all along.

Richard looked toward the door.

“Do you know what Thomas said about you?”

“What?”

“He said, ‘If Evelyn ever wants something, nobody will be able to buy her.’”

My throat tightened.

“He knew me.”

“Yes.”

Richard's expression changed.

“That was why I hated him.”

I stared.

“You hated my husband because he knew me?”

“I hated him because he understood things money couldn't solve.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Richard reached into his pocket.

The officer allowed him to remove a folded paper.

He placed it on the table.

I didn't touch it.

“What is that?”

“An accounting statement.”

“For what?”

“The trust.”

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

I opened it.

Numbers filled the pages.

Property values.

Account balances.

Management fees.

Transfers.

At the bottom was a total.

I read it twice.

Then again.

The assets Thomas had placed under protection were worth far more than I had imagined.

The lottery winnings were significant.

But they were a fraction of what Thomas had quietly preserved.

I looked at Richard.

“Why are you showing me this?”

“Because I want something.”

“What?”

“Your cooperation.”

I laughed.

“You're in custody.”

“I know.”

“You stole from my husband.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated my family.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to take the trust.”

“Yes.”

“And now you want my cooperation?”

“I want you to understand something.”

“What?”

“Your family will destroy itself if you let the trust become a prize.”

I stared at him.

For once, he wasn't smiling.

“Graham will fight with you.”

“No.”

“He will eventually.”

“You don't know my son.”

“I know men.”

“You knew a younger version of my son.”

“And Paige?”

“She has changed.”

“People don't change.”

I stood.

“You're wrong.”

Richard looked at me.

“Thomas believed that too.”

I turned toward the door.

“Then perhaps he was right.”

Before I left, Richard spoke again.

“Evelyn.”

I stopped.

“There is one account you haven't found.”

I looked back.

“What account?”

“The one Thomas never put in the trust.”

My heart tightened.

“Where?”

Richard smiled.

“That is what you're going to have to discover.”

I returned to the cottage with the document.

Daniel was waiting.

“What did he tell you?”

I explained.

Daniel read the accounting statement.

“There is something missing.”

“What?”

He compared the figures.

“The properties are accounted for.”

“The company shares.”

“Accounted for.”

“Then what?”

He looked at the final total.

“There should be another account.”

I thought of Thomas.

His habit of keeping emergency cash.

His old fishing equipment.

The places he used to disappear when he wanted to think.

Then I remembered something.

His boat.

We hadn't checked it.

The boat had been sold after his death.

Or so I had thought.

I called the marina.

The owner answered.

“Yes, the Mercer boat is still here.”

I froze.

“What?”

“It hasn't moved in years.”

Thomas's boat was still there.

Hidden in plain sight.

That afternoon, Daniel and I went to the marina.

The boat sat beneath a weathered cover.

Dust covered the windshield.

Inside, everything looked exactly as I remembered.

Thomas's old fishing jacket hung from a hook.

His tackle box remained under the seat.

I touched the steering wheel.

For a moment, I could almost hear him complaining about the engine.

Daniel searched the compartments.

Nothing.

Then he opened the floor panel.

A metal box was bolted beneath it.

He looked at me.

“Another key.”

I recognized it.

The number 4.

The same key from the farmhouse.

It opened the box.

Inside was a small notebook.

A bank statement.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Thomas beside a much younger Richard.

On the back was a date.

The day they started the company.

Underneath, Thomas had written:

Before money, there was trust.

I opened the notebook.

The first page contained one sentence.

If Richard ever comes back for what he believes belongs to him, show him the second agreement.

I looked at Daniel.

“What second agreement?”

He turned the page.

There was an account number.

And beneath it:

Mercer & Hale — dissolution settlement.

Martin's name appeared.

I stared.

Thomas had not merely separated from Richard.

He had negotiated a secret settlement with him.

And the settlement contained one extraordinary clause.

If either partner attempted to reclaim protected assets through fraudulent means, all remaining ownership would transfer to Evelyn Mercer.

I felt my hands go cold.

“Thomas planned for this.”

Daniel nodded.

“He planned for Richard.”

“No.”

I looked at the agreement.

“He planned for whoever came after him.”

The boat rocked gently against the dock.

Outside, the water moved beneath the gray sky.

For the first time, I understood the true shape of Thomas's plan.

The money had never been the center.

The trust had never been the center.

I was.

Not because I was special.

Because I was the one person Thomas believed could walk away from power.

And that was exactly what Richard had never understood.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Second Agreement Gave Evelyn Power Over
