suspected.”

Paige nodded.

“He suspected everyone.”

“What did Thomas know?” I asked.

“That Charles was moving continued.

“I hated how things changed after Thomas died.”

“You mean when I moved in?”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“At first, I thought I was helping.”

“I know.”

“But then Charles pressured me.”

“What did he want?”

“Access.”

“To what?”

“Your records.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas had hidden something from him.”

I looked at Daniel.

“The trust.”

Daniel nodded.

“Not just the trust.”

He opened his briefcase.

Inside was a list of properties.

There were seventeen.

I recognized several addresses.

One belonged to the house.

Another was the warehouse.

A third was land near the river.

A fourth was an apartment building downtown.

“These properties were purchased through different companies,” Daniel said.

“Why?”

“To conceal common ownership.”

“Thomas owned them?”

“Ultimately.”

I looked at the list.

“Then why hide them?”

“Because he was trying to protect them.”

“From Charles?”

“From everyone.”

I thought about Thomas.

He had always hated discussing money.

Whenever I asked how the business was doing, he would smile and say, “Enough.”

I had assumed it was modesty.

Perhaps it had been caution.

Martin took the list.

“These properties represent a substantial amount of wealth.”

“How much?”

“More than the lottery.”

Graham stared.

“Dad was worth that much?”

“Not personally.”

Martin pointed to the trust structure.

“The assets were separated.”

I sat down.

The lottery had made me think eleven million dollars was the largest financial shock of my life.

Now I was learning that Thomas had quietly accumulated assets worth many times that amount.

And he had done it without letting me know.

I felt almost angry with him.

“You should have told me.”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said, “He wanted you to have a normal life.”

I looked at him.

“He gave me a normal life by keeping me ignorant?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn't feel like a compliment.”

“No.”

Daniel's expression softened.

“It was his mistake.”

I looked at the photograph of Thomas.

For the first time, I allowed myself to be angry with him.

Not the dead husband I remembered.

The secretive man who had decided what I could handle.

The man who had left me to discover his life through strangers and documents.

I whispered, “You should have trusted me.”

Graham heard me.

He looked down.

“Maybe he was wrong.”

“Yes.”

That answer seemed to surprise him.

I continued.

“He loved me.”

“Yes.”

“But love doesn't make every decision right.”

Paige nodded.

“That is what I learned.”

Martin asked her, “What happened after Thomas died?”

Paige hesitated.

“Charles became more aggressive.”

“How?”

“He started asking about the trust.”

“Did he know it existed?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Thomas told him there was a protective structure.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles was involved in some of the original transactions.”

I frowned.

“What transactions?”

“Property acquisitions.”

“Legal ones?”

“Some.”

“And the others?”

Paige looked at Daniel.

“Not all.”

Daniel nodded.

“Charles had been skimming money through shell companies.”

Graham leaned forward.

“How much?”

“Enough to build another life.”

I looked at Paige.

“Why didn't Thomas stop him?”

“He was gathering evidence.”

“And then he died.”

“Yes.”

“Did Charles cause his death?”

The room went silent.

Paige looked horrified.

“No.”

Daniel answered.

“Thomas's death was natural.”

I exhaled.

I hadn't realized I'd been holding my breath.

Martin closed the folder.

“We need to separate two things.”

“What?”

“Charles's financial crimes and the family deception.”

I nodded.

“Agreed.”

He looked at Paige.

“You may have protected the trust, but you still participated in misleading Evelyn.”

“I know.”

“And you allowed Graham to believe his mother was a burden.”

“I know.”

“Those choices had consequences.”

Paige lowered her head.

“I know.”

Graham stood.

“I need air.”

He walked outside.

Paige followed.

I stayed with Daniel and Martin.

For the first time, I asked the question I had avoided.

“Did Thomas ever doubt me?”

Daniel looked surprised.

“No.”

“Then why wasn't I told?”

“He believed you would choose family over evidence.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He feared that if you knew the truth, you'd forgive someone before the investigation was complete.”

I thought about that.

He was right.

I probably would have.

I had spent my life smoothing over conflicts.

Making excuses.

Keeping peace.

Thomas had known that.

Maybe he had understood me better than I understood myself.

Daniel placed a final folder on the table.

“There is one thing I haven't shown you.”

“What?”

“Charles's list of targets.”

I opened it.

Names appeared.

Daniel.

Thomas.

Graham.

Paige.

Me.

Then another name.

Ruth.

My heart stopped.

“Why Ruth?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Martin took the list.

“There may be more.”

We searched the folder.

There was an address beside Ruth's name.

Her home.

My hands began to shake.

I stood immediately.

“We have to call her.”

Daniel was already reaching for his phone.

Ruth answered.

“Hello?”

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Are you alone?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Lock the doors.”

“Why?”

“Just do it.”

She laughed nervously.

“Evelyn, what is going on?”

“Please.”

The line went silent.

Then we heard a noise.

A sharp crash.

Ruth gasped.

“Someone is here.”

I stood.

“Get into a room and lock it.”

“I'm trying.”

Daniel was already heading for the door.

Martin grabbed his arm.

“We call the police.”

Daniel nodded.

I heard Ruth breathing rapidly.

Then another sound.

Footsteps.

“Ruth?”

No answer.

“Ruth!”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Graham came back inside.

“What happened?”

“Ruth.”

He saw my face.

“What?”

“She may be in danger.”

We called the police.

Daniel drove.

Martin stayed with me.

Twenty minutes later, the police arrived at Ruth's house.

The front door was open.

The living room had been disturbed.

A lamp lay broken on the floor.

Drawers had been pulled out.

But Ruth was gone.

My knees nearly gave way.

Then an officer called from the kitchen.

He had found something.

A note.

Three words.

STOP LOOKING, EVELYN.

I stared at it.

The threat was no longer hidden.

Whoever had been watching us had moved from documents to people.

And for the first time, I understood why Thomas had built so many layers around the trust.

He had never been protecting money.

He had been protecting us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Ruth Disappeared With a Warning Left
