Someone had opened the locked cabinet, removed a folder, and left the remaining papers scattered across the desk. She had discovered the disturbance that morning when she went to retrieve documents for Laura.

“Was anything else taken?” I asked.

“Not that I can tell.”

“Jewelry? Money?”

“No. Just the papers.”

That detail troubled me more than a general burglary would have. Whoever entered the study appeared to know exactly what they wanted.

Daniel arrived at my house within half an hour. He had already spoken to his mother and was preparing to drive over. I insisted on going with him, although Laura advised us not to disturb anything the police might need to examine.

Leo was at school, and Mrs. Alvarez agreed to collect him if we were delayed.

The Mercer house stood behind a long stone wall on a quiet street lined with mature trees. I had seen photographs of the property in Daniel’s family albums, but standing before it made the distance between our lives painfully clear.

Sarah had grown up in our modest house with its leaking gutters and narrow kitchen. Daniel had grown up here, surrounded by polished floors, expensive furniture, and rooms large enough to make footsteps echo.

Yet none of that wealth had protected him from his father’s lies.

Evelyn met us at the door. Her face was drawn, and she looked as though she had not slept. A police officer stood near the study, taking notes.

The room smelled faintly of furniture polish. Papers covered the desk, and a drawer hung open. The cabinet where Evelyn had found Sarah’s letter stood against the far wall.

Daniel examined the lock without touching it.

“Who had access to this room?” he asked.

“Your father, me, and occasionally Mr. Whitcomb.”

I looked at her. “Who's Mr. Whitcomb?”

“Your father's attorney.”

Daniel turned sharply. “Charles Whitcomb?”

Evelyn nodded.

Daniel explained that Whitcomb had handled much of his father’s business for more than twenty years. He had prepared contracts, managed disputes, and occasionally visited the house to collect documents.

“Did he know about Sarah?” I asked.

Daniel’s expression hardened. “He knew everything my father wanted handled quietly.”

The officer asked Evelyn whether she had noticed signs of forced entry. She said she had not. The doors were locked when she went to bed, and the alarm had not sounded.

That suggested whoever entered might have used a key or known how to access the property without triggering the system.

I watched Daniel look around the study. He had grown up in this house, but his movements were cautious, almost unfamiliar. He stopped beside a framed photograph of his father and stared at it.

“Did he ever tell you why he hated Sarah?” I asked quietly.

Daniel shook his head. “He said she would ruin my future.”

“Did he know her?”

“Not really. He met her twice.”

I thought about Sarah’s letter. She had been worried about money, frightened by Daniel’s accident, and determined to keep her child. Nothing about her suggested the calculating person Daniel’s father had described.

Evelyn approached us carrying a small notebook.

“I found this yesterday,” she said. “It was behind the cabinet.”

The notebook belonged to her husband. Most pages contained appointments and business reminders. Near the back were several entries involving Whitcomb, Dr. Bell, and a company called Northbridge Records.

Laura had already identified Northbridge as the firm holding the sealed archive box.

Daniel read one entry aloud.

“Review hospital materials with C.W. before transfer.”

The date was three months after Sarah’s death.

Another entry referred to a payment made to Bell.

I looked at Evelyn. “Did your husband ever explain these payments?”

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

She lowered her eyes. “I learned not to ask about certain things.”

I wanted to tell her that silence had helped destroy two families. But looking at her face, I understood she already knew.

The police collected information about the missing folder and asked Evelyn to provide a list of people with access to the house. Laura advised us to give the notebook to the investigators while retaining a documented copy for the civil investigation.

We left shortly afterward.

In the car, Daniel gripped the steering wheel without starting the engine.

“I spent my whole life believing my father was protecting me,” he said.

I waited.

“He made every decision sound reasonable. Where I went to school. Who I spent time with. What job I should take. Even after the accident, I thought he knew what was best.”

He looked toward the house.

“I let him convince me that searching for Leo would hurt everyone.”

I did not soften the truth. “You should have kept looking.”

“I know.”

“But you're looking now.”

Daniel nodded.

That afternoon, Laura contacted Charles Whitcomb and requested a meeting. He initially declined, stating that he had no involvement in Daniel’s personal affairs.

When Laura mentioned the storage company and the documents bearing his initials, he agreed to speak with her.

The meeting took place in Laura’s office the next day. Whitcomb was a thin man with silver-rimmed glasses and a carefully controlled manner. He carried a leather briefcase and greeted Daniel as though they were meeting for an ordinary business appointment.

“Your father would be distressed by all this,” he said.

Daniel looked at him. “My father caused it.”

Whitcomb adjusted his glasses. “That's a serious accusation.”

Laura placed copies of the documents on the table.

“We're trying to establish who arranged for these records to be collected and stored,” she said.

Whitcomb examined the pages. He acknowledged that he had handled some of the late Mr. Mercer’s legal affairs but claimed he did not remember the specific transaction.

Laura asked whether he had helped prepare the letter bearing my forged signature.

“No.”

“Were you aware that Daniel Mercer had a living son?”

Whitcomb paused.

“I understood there were conflicting accounts.”

Daniel leaned forward. “You knew.”

Whitcomb looked at him without answering.

I felt the old anger rise again. Men like Whitcomb had surrounded Daniel’s father, speaking carefully and avoiding responsibility while ordinary people lived with the consequences of their decisions.

Laura asked about the archive box.

Whitcomb admitted that he had arranged its storage, but said the contents belonged to the Mercer estate and should be handled through the proper legal process.

“Then you won't object to preserving it,” Laura said.

“I would advise against any unnecessary disturbance of confidential materials.”

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“Confidential from whom? Me?”

Whitcomb closed his briefcase.

He said he had nothing further to add.

As he stood, I noticed a small hesitation when Laura mentioned Dr. Bell. His fingers tightened around the handle of his case, and he looked toward the door.

Laura noticed it too.

After he left, she told us that Whitcomb’s refusal to answer certain questions did not establish wrongdoing. But his role in arranging the storage was now confirmed.

“We'll follow the documents,” she said. “People can change their stories. Records are harder to change when copies exist in several places.”

The following week, Leo’s relationship with Daniel continued cautiously.

Daniel came over for pancakes on Sunday. He arrived with fresh strawberries and a book about baseball history, which Leo immediately opened at the kitchen table.

They argued cheerfully about which team had the best uniforms. Daniel admitted he had never been particularly good at sports, and Leo seemed delighted by the confession.

After breakfast, they went into the yard to practice throwing a ball. Daniel moved carefully because of his leg, but he managed several throws before sitting on the porch steps.

Leo joined him.

I watched through the kitchen window as they talked.

Later, Leo told me Daniel had apologized again for missing his birthdays.

“What did you say?” I asked.

“I told him he could come to the next one.”

I turned away before Leo noticed my eyes filling.

For all the documents and legal questions surrounding us, this was the part of the story that mattered most. A boy who had spent ten years imagining his father was beginning to know him as a person.

Yet the investigation continued to intrude.

Laura called on Tuesday evening. Northbridge Records had confirmed that the archive box remained in storage. The company had received an inquiry about its contents shortly after Daniel’s father died.

“From whom?” I asked.

“Charles Whitcomb.”

Daniel, sitting beside me, looked up sharply.

Laura explained that Whitcomb had asked whether the box could be destroyed. Northbridge refused because the retention agreement had not expired and the estate’s authorization was incomplete.

I felt a chill.

“Did he say why he wanted it destroyed?”

“No.”

The next day, Laura obtained a copy of the storage agreement through the estate’s representatives. The box was listed under a reference number, with Whitcomb named as the authorized contact.

But another name appeared on the original transfer paperwork.

Dr. Adrian Bell.

Daniel read the document several times.

“Why would a doctor be involved in storing my father's private records?”

Laura looked at us.

“That's what we need to establish.”

Two days later, she received an unexpected call from Northbridge. An employee had reviewed the inventory and found that the box contained several sealed envelopes and a small recording device.

The device had been listed as a digital voice recorder.

I stared at the telephone.

“Do they know what's on it?”

“No,” Laura said. “It hasn't been examined.”

Daniel sat beside me, motionless.

His father had kept photographs, letters, medical records, and now a recording device. I remembered what Daniel had said about his father believing information gave him control.

I wondered whose voice had been preserved inside that box.

Laura said the necessary legal arrangements were moving forward, but the process would take time.

That evening, after Leo went to bed, Daniel stayed in the kitchen with me.

He looked at Sarah’s photograph and said quietly, “I wish she could see him.”

I followed his gaze.

“So do I.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel’s telephone rang.

It was Evelyn.

She had received a call from Charles Whitcomb. He told her that opening the Northbridge box would damage Daniel and Leo more than leaving the past alone.

When she asked what he meant, he refused to explain.

Instead, he said there was something inside the box that Daniel’s father had never intended his son to hear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Recording Hidden for Ten Years Carried Sarah’s Voice and Revealed How Far Daniel’s Father Had Gone to Control Their Future

Evelyn’s voice shook as she described the study.
