used her crimes to keep her quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s standard method.<\/p>\n<p>Create complicity.<\/p>\n<p>Then weaponize it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Elaine continue stealing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She stopped after Vanessa\u2019s birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to her this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa nearly stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked toward the observation mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she was going to give the documents to someone Richard couldn\u2019t intimidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal prosecutors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never contacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe intended to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe changed plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she saw Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin, watching from the other room, stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Martin have to do with Elaine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin entered the interview room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really don\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine worked at Harrington Supply briefly when you were security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ever give you anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Leonard was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine kept copies because she discovered Richard wasn\u2019t the man listed on Vanessa\u2019s original paternity paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma had told us Elaine was Vanessa\u2019s biological mother.<\/p>\n<p>We assumed Dad was her biological father.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently that assumption was wrong too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was listed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>His face emptied before she said the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Graves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Martin stared at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and Elaine were both drunk after the 1988 company holiday party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never slept with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone did.<\/p>\n<p>She looked from Martin to Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Then to me.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not doing this again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople telling me who I belong to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a DNA test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked at Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd until then, nobody calls him my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the investigator entered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine Foster has been located.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a law office downtown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is she doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiving a deposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn attorney representing the Harrington Supply employee pension fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine had chosen the people Dad\u2019s theft had harmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents does she have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginal payroll records. Birth records.
