wrong?”

Thomas read.

Samuel had called ahead and instructed the clerk to intentionally prepare his usual coffee incorrectly.

Why?

Because he suspected someone had been tampering with food or drink.

He wanted to see who reacted when Martin returned with a replacement.

The entire morning had been a test.

“Did the café employee know?”

“Yes.”

“Who reacted?”

Thomas turned the page.

“Leonard Vale.”

Grandpa wrote that Vale became visibly agitated when Martin carried a fresh cup upstairs.

That implied Vale had prepared something involving the original.

“So Vale intended to poison the first coffee.”

Martin whispered.

“Maybe.”

But Martin discarded it.

Vale lost his chance.

Then the replacement sat unattended.

Vale had to act quickly.

“Second dose was Vale.”

The evidence aligned.

But Thomas kept reading.

Samuel wrote:

Leonard was not the only person who reacted.

Another person arrived unexpectedly after learning I was ill the night before.

Patricia.

Daniel’s mother.

My pulse accelerated.

Patricia entered the building at 8:14 through the garage.

Old records had missed it because she used Grandpa’s private elevator.

She reached his office while Martin was in the restroom.

That placed her there during the two-minute window too.

“So both possible poisoners were present.”

Thomas continued.

Grandpa had arranged for a small dictation recorder to run inside his office.

“Recording?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“Box seven.”

Thomas went silent.

“What?”

“The tape is here.”

Dad said sharply, “Destroy it.”

Nobody breathed.

That reaction answered more than he intended.

“Play it.”

Thomas did.

Static filled the phone.

Then Grandpa’s voice.

Faint.

Another voice.

Patricia.

“Dad, you need to stop.”

Grandpa replied, “I’m done stopping.”

Then Vale.

“Samuel, don’t make this theatrical.”

Footsteps.

Grandpa said, “Leonard, get out.”

More static.

Then Martin’s voice from reception.

“I’ll be right back.”

A door.

Silence.

Then Patricia whispered, “You look terrible.”

Grandpa answered, “I feel terrible.”

“What did you eat?”

“Dinner.”

She made a sound.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

My skin prickled.

Grandpa said, “For what?”

A pause.

Long.

Then Vale’s voice from somewhere closer.

“For waiting this long.”

A cup lid snapped.

Someone moved.

The recorder captured a scuffle.

Grandpa shouted.

Then Patricia:

“Leonard, what are you doing?”

Vale:

“Finishing what you started.”

The room around us froze.

Patricia had administered the first dose.

Vale knew.

Then Vale added the second.

Two poisoners.

Grandma’s theory was right.

Thomas stopped the playback.

Dad said nothing.

“What happened next?” I asked.

Thomas played more.

Patricia sounded horrified.

“I didn’t give him enough to kill him.”

Vale replied:

“You gave enough to make this necessary.”

There it was.

Patricia had tried to make Grandpa sick.

Maybe frighten him.

Maybe delay him.

Vale turned her act into murder.

Grandpa’s voice weakened.

“You fools.”

Then:

“Richard will destroy you both.”

Patricia cried.

Vale laughed.

“No, Samuel. Richard will inherit you.”

The tape ended several minutes later in silence.

Martin covered his face.

He had not killed Grandpa.

Patricia had poisoned him first.

Vale delivered the fatal dose.

Dad had not killed him.

Thomas had not.

But Dad had benefited.

And then hidden what he learned.

I said, “Dad.”

Silence.

“When did you find out?”

Thomas answered for him.

“Later that day.”

“How?”

“Patricia told him.”

I stared at the phone.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you report Vale?”

“No.”

“Patricia?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel was already dead.”

The emptiness of that answer stunned me.

“So you used it.”

Dad did not respond.

“You blackmailed them.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Yes.”

Dad inherited Grandpa’s death as leverage.

Patricia had poisoned Samuel.

Vale finished him.

Dad knew.

So he owned them.

That was how his power accelerated after Grandpa died.

Not because he created every secret.

Because he collected them.

“What did you make them do?”

Dad’s voice hardened.

“Enough.”

“No.”

The investigator gestured for me to continue.

“What?”

Silence.

Then Dad said quietly, “Patricia transferred Briar control.”

“Vale?”

“Helped finalize the estate.”

“Forged will?”

“He prepared it.”

“You filed it.”

“Yes.”

“Because they couldn’t expose you without exposing themselves.”

“Yes.”

A complete machine.

Mutual guilt again.

“What does Thomas want?”

Dad laughed.

“The same thing everyone in this family wants.”

Thomas snapped, “Shut up.”

“Freedom.”

That was almost funny.

Every Harrington claimed to want freedom while building cages for everyone else.

I said, “Thomas, bring the tape and documents to police.”

“No.”

“Then you become part of destroying them.”

“I already am.”

“Correct.”

A pause.

“Maybe that’s why you should stop.”

He breathed slowly.

Then I heard movement.

A door.

Wind.

“Thomas?”

Dad’s voice changed.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m done.”

“Don’t be stupid.”

“Thirty-six years late.”

“Thomas.”

Then a sudden impact.

A shout.

The phone fell.

We heard struggle.

Dad yelling.

Thomas cursing.

Then a gunshot.

Eleanor screamed.

The line filled with static.

I shouted, “Thomas!”

No answer.

Then Dad’s voice.

Weak.

“Claire.”

My blood went cold.

“Who was shot?”

He breathed heavily.

“Your uncle.”

“Is he alive?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Put pressure on the wound.”

“He has the gun.”

Thomas groaned in the background.

The investigator was shouting coordinates to Michigan authorities.

“Dad, listen to me.”

“I am.”

“Move away from Thomas.”

“He’s blocking the door.”

“Don’t touch the gun.”

Silence.

Then Thomas’s voice, faint.

“Claire.”

“I’m here.”

“Box.”

“What?”

“The box.”

“Leave it.”

“Not safe.”

“Police are coming.”

“No.”

His breathing sounded wrong.

“Thomas.”

“Richard called someone.”

My pulse jumped.

“Who?”

Dad shouted, “Stop talking.”

Thomas continued anyway.

“Before we opened it.”

“Who did he call?”

A pause.

Then one name.

“Patricia.”

The line died.

Patricia was supposedly negotiating surrender with police.

But Dad had contacted her before reaching box seven.

And Thomas believed the archive still was not safe.
