entering the building.

Eight minutes before Martin delivered coffee.

Nobody spoke.

The investigator looked at Eleanor.

“You said Thomas was gone.”

“He told me he was.”

Martin’s face had changed.

“I was in that building.”

“Did you see him?”

“No.”

“Could he have reached Samuel’s reception area?”

“Yes.”

“Did you leave the coffee unattended?”

“For two minutes.”

Thomas had been there.

Vale had been there.

Martin had been there.

Grandpa died afterward.

The question of who poisoned him had reopened completely.

A door slammed somewhere inside the warehouse.

Officers reacted instantly.

“Police!”

Footsteps.

Running.

Someone had been hiding in the rear rooms.

Officers chased.

A minute later they returned with Peter.

His hospital clothes were dirty.

His bandage had bled through.

But he was alive.

Eleanor rushed toward him.

He looked at me instead.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where is Thomas?”

“He left.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes before you came.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he take the envelope?”

Peter shook his head.

My heart jumped.

“Where is it?”

He reached slowly inside his jacket.

The investigator stopped him, searched him and removed a sealed envelope.

Still intact.

He had scanned it but not surrendered the original.

“For Claire,” he said.

Thomas had told him it belonged to both of us.

Peter apparently changed his mind.

“Why?”

He looked toward Eleanor.

“Because Thomas lied to me.”

“About what?”

Peter’s face crumpled.

“He said he was my father.”

“And?”

“He had a DNA test done years ago.”

Silence.

“He knew he wasn’t.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Thomas had used paternity as leverage.

Another Harrington man using family as a tool.

“Why would he do that?”

Peter wiped his face.

“Because he needed someone inside the company who would do anything for him.”

I looked at the envelope.

“Did he tell you what Grandpa’s letter says?”

“Most of it.”

“What did he leave out?”

Peter swallowed.

“The last page.”

My pulse quickened.

“What’s on the last page?”

He looked at Martin.

“Something about the morning Samuel died.”

The investigator opened the envelope under evidence procedure.

The final page had not appeared in the recovered scanner cache.

Grandpa’s handwriting filled most of it.

At the bottom was one sentence underlined twice.

If I die tomorrow, ask Martin why he replaced my coffee.

Martin went white.

<a
